alias_sqbr: And yet all I can think is this will make for a great dreamwidth entry. (dreamwidth)
So what with everything happening at the AO3 (see [personal profile] synonymous) I thought it would be good to create dreamwidth crossposts of my AO3 works. And thus: [community profile] square_bromides

Currently I've just posted my work with the oldest posting date, the cracky Stargate fancomic Mafdet Slayer of Serpents, which I'm still pretty happy with 14 years later. I don't have any set schedule in mind but will probably post in fits and bursts.

I have 216 works at [archiveofourown.org profile] sqbr, some of which are Very Long, so I don't know if I'll get around to archiving all of them, but the only way to start is by beginning!

The name is silly ('bromide' is an old fashioned word for a boring story) but there aren't a lot of relevant words starting with 'br', and once I saw the diagram of bromide crystals I couldn't not use it. Purple AND square!

This is mostly prompt art, thanks to everyone who gave a prompt! Making this post made me realise I forgot to link some earlier works, one of which got TRANSLATED :D

Everything is fanart unless stated otherwise, and has an image description.

I wrote some fic! This may not seem very exciting but I haven't written any fic in over a year. Which is to say, not since shortly before my life fell into UTTER CRAP for a while. Hooray for life being less crap and a new Dragon Age game :)

The Scent of Honeysuckle at AO3 The Scent of Honeysuckle at Fanfiction.net

Relationships: Josephine Montilyet/Cassandra Pentaghast
Characters: Josephine Montilyet, Cassandra Pentaghast
Additional Tags: Fanfiction, Romance, Fake/Pretend Relationship, Happy Ending

And there's a silly little sequel/collection of ficlets: "Reactions: Before and After" at AO3, "Reactions: Before and After" at fanfic.net.

Now some comics! All have descriptions.

A non spoilery comic about the "patch"

The rest have major spoilers!

I also made some treats! And my Monster High doll was indeed quite useful for drawing anime-ish bodies from different angles :)

So, like everyone else in fandom, I am a queer disabled woman who loves video games. And like everyone else in fandom, I find great joy expressing myself through femslash fancomics about the robots in those video games. But something has been annoying me lately and I need to get it off my chest.

Where are the robot/human enemy ships?
Am I the only one who's noticed this and finds it troubling? )

Glitch!

A comic I made about playing the online game Glitch:

Glitch on DeviantArt
(It's not very readable on Tumblr, since DA can be weird for some people the transcript is below the cut)

I'm actually quite enjoying the game, and the slightly off kilter sense of humour charms me more than it weirds me out. I have three invites if anyone's interested. The fact that I just got given a quest to give gifts to lower levelled players is pure coincidence.

I think this is the first MMORPG I've played. I don't know how it compares to others, but basically you get given little quests and go around gathering/refining items, exploring, and learning skills (which often prompt new quests) I've found the rate of new quests etc has been about right to keep it fun, especially now I've bought an extra big bag so I can wander around harvesting stuff without having to juggle my inventory. It's totally free, but you can pay for appearance changing items and teleport tokens (otherwise you walk or take the train) I haven't taken much advantage of the social aspect and most of it's pretty solitary but you are encouraged to work together and do each other favours to some extent, plus there's global/local/private chat and groups (I've joined the dreamwidth group)

If you already have an account my avatar's name is Sequoia Baer.

How did I not realise that AO3 had a "share" button? Is that new or am I just really unobservant?

After a year I finally got around to drawing the Cousland arc of my comic series Various Attempts at romance in Dragon Age Origins, which led me to some slightly less silly Cousland/Leliana art:

There's been a bunch of discussion amongst fanfic writers about what they write, how popular it is and how many comments it gets. Apart from the fact that I also tend to get around 100 hits per comment my experience is VERY different to the general consensus (which doesn't make everyone else wrong, it just makes me weird), and since I was bored I looked at various patterns and crunched some numbers. If text bores you scroll to the end, there's graphs :D

It's important to note that I mainly make comics and art, but they seem to get similar general responses to my prose.

So, the general trends people have mentioned:

  • Stories about white cis able-bodied men are more popular
  • femslash is much less popular
  • Nobody likes stories about original characters

Plus various theories about hits and comments.

Ok, not really. But I've been feeling seriously crappy recently and didn't get around to posting anything here. All art comes with a transcript.

First off: Hapless is back! I have posted 25 of the better gag strips from my defunct webcomic Hapless to a new home on Drunk Duck. There's still a few hiding on my harddrive I need to ferret out since the server they were originally on died. Hapless was part of me playing around with the idea of being a Webcomic Artist around 2006, I also made a narrative comic "A Circle of Stars" which ran for a few years before petering out, I don't think I can be bothered re-uploading that but Cam may fix the broken server one day.

And now, the form of creativity I got into after getting bored of original webcomics: fanart!

Castle Psych Sherlock
3 pages. Also available at AO3, has a transcript.

Sherlock from "Sherlock" meets Castle from "Castle" and Shawn from "Psych".

While looking up reference pictures I came across this very cute White Collar/Psych ad, and it's amusing since the comic was inspired by a conversation on [personal profile] flamebyrd's dw about Inception and White Collar.

Since I've found it really useful when other people do this(*): Various creative works of mine that I think people might particularly enjoy, a mix of my personal taste and what's been popular at the various places I post stuff.

All the works which form part of series can be read as stand alone stories, and all art and comics come with descriptions/transcripts (unless I forgot some, in which case let me know!). All safe for work and at most teen/PG rated.

Crossposted with a transcript at AO3.

Drawn for a [livejournal.com profile] gokusen_love context which it won by default as the only entrant. Woohoo! I won! :D

I drew this not long after my Skip Beat comic, I think it turned out a lot better. I still find manga style art and layout quite challenging but it was good to try something a bit different.
alias_sqbr: Zuko with a fish on his head (avatar)
Most of these don't have transcripts, sorry.

Jane Austen's Fight Club A fake trailer for a remake of "Fight Club" to being about regency women trying to find some purpose in their disaffected socially bound lives. Works surprisingly well while still just as silly as you'd expect.

Aang is the Best Guide EVER My favourite piece of "Legend of Korra" fanart so far.

And now some Inceptiony stuff. I thought Inception would be the kind of film noone would make fluffy fanworks about but it turns out I was utterly wrong. Alas for me(*) most of it seems to be porn, which may indicate that people's inspiration is the prettiness of the cast rather than the cleverness of the ideas...

Fanart by me: Arthur and his hair Very silly, but the image refused to go away. Has a description. Somewhat inspired by...

PRETTY PRETTY INCEPTION Cracky and spoilery but fun fancomic. (I'm never sure how I feel about the gender issues around the "Lol men playing at being princesses" thing, but that's not all there is to the joke here)

Dissecting 'Inception': Six Interpretations and Five Plot Holes Sensible text rather than silly pictures. I like that "things are exactly as stated in the film" is considered the least plausible interpretation :)

(*)Porn can explore clever ideas perfectly well, but it's not really my thing, and in particular I think the emotional and physical understatedness of the film is one of the things I liked and so I find it jarring when it's contradicted by fic. Also there's too much Arthur/Eames and not enough Arthur/Ariadne and Cobb/Saito
alias_sqbr: Zuko with a fish on his head (avatar)
I am having a very weird out of spoons day: it is easier to write and create things than consume them. When I try surfing the internet my brain slides off the page and I find myself staring into space, dizzy. (Proofreading this post was tricky, but I managed, yay me)

So! An incoherent ramble, lucky you guys, huh.

DAO: Master and Apprentice
also at AO3 This is all [personal profile] jakia's fault(*).

Also, since the server is down I posted a bunch of my old fancomics to DeviantArt. They've all been posted here before, but I got around to colouring my Avatar The Last Airbender AU comic and I think it turned out pretty well for my first real attempt at action scenes.

(*)We got into a discussion about Anders/Nathaniel which got me really thinking about how the dynamic would work. This is the first m/m slash I've made that wasn't secretly all about the female characters :)
alias_sqbr: Dagna from Dragon Age reaching for a book (dagna)
I'm moderately happy with all of these. (nb yes, accidentally posted this to lj and then deleted it, sorry to anyone who saw it twice or whatever)
