Two things worth noting for the upper house (the big form):
1) Parties no longer get to say where your preferences go, whether you vote above or below the line. The only preferences that flow on are the ones you specifically mark. If you vote only a single "1" above the line, no preferences from you will flow on at all if that party doesn't get in.
2) The minimum number of preferences above the line is 1. The minimum below the line is 20.

(and for the vast majority of you who are not in Western Australia, enjoy some not-especially-depressing political info with no effect on your life)

Question at little_details from someone trying to accurately write a vegetarian second gen Indian immigrant teen in Perth in 2003.

I'm still getting over my cold but rambled about what I remembered vegetarians eating back then, and it occurred to me some of you might be able to offer useful information as well. No pressure, I don't know this person, but thought I might as well pass it on.

I'm pondering showing up to Swancon for a day, paying the day membership but not actually going in, just hanging around outside where there's fresh air and chatting (masked and socially distanced) with anyone else outside. The Rise has lots of park around it, and if it's raining there's some covered outdoor sections.

Anyone else going? I'm currently leaning towards Sunday in case I feel brave and awake enough to go to the World Building for First Nations Super Heroes with Scott Wilson at 9am, but am open to Saturday if there'll be more people there. I definitely won't have the energy for both days, there's moderate odds I won't have energy for either of them, or will end up only having energy on the opposite day to the one I was planning on. But it would be nice to say hello if our stars align!

I don't have a wheelchair right now, so the plan is to be dropped off near where I'm going to sit, and then stay in basically one spot for an hour or two, then ring for Cam to come pick me up. I thought about hiring a chair but that's a lot of money for something I might not even have the energy for. It's just occurred to me that sitting on hard ground for so long would get uncomfortable, hmm. Maybe I'll bring a cushion??

Since WA Fresh has sadly stopped again.

I just did an order with The People's Produce and it was pretty good! No minimum order, cheap delivery, wide range of suburbs, good quality https://www.thepeoplesproduce.com.au/

Note that this is not the same as The People's Market, which has donated to an anti-abortion charity but does have a large range of stuff http://www.thepeoplesmarketperth.com.au

I also considered TAL fruit and veg, which has a $50 minimum order https://talfruitandveg.com.au/online-store/

and Morley Fruit and Veg https://www.morleywholesale.com.au/

Apparently appointments made with the previous link may be considered invalid :( Afaict this is the right link: https://covid-vaccine.healthdirect.gov.au/eligibility

As they say about the hospital centres: If you have not been directly invited to book an appointment through your employer, you will likely be turned away at one of these vaccination locations.

Apparently some otherwise eligible non-frontline workers who made hospital appointments have been turned away, while others have successfully been vaccinated. So, whether you want to to take the chance is up to you.

Sorry to anyone who got messed about by me posting the other link, in my defense it was very unclear, and even had a "Are you a front line worker?" question that let you continue if you clicked "no".

I think you have to be one of:
Quarantine & Border Workers, Frontline Health Care Workers, Other Health Care Workers, Aged Care and disability care residents, Elderly adults aged 70 and over, Critical and high risk workers, Younger adults with an underlying medical condition including those with a disability

I found it all a bit confusing tbh, but I got an appointment.

I just need to reply to an SMS and copy over some numbers and then can give it back(*). My iphone 4 died and I want to keep my number, which Optus makes very annoying if you can't access your old phone/sim. All the phones we have in the house take the new nano-sized sims.

(*)Hopefully. I can't guarantee there won't be some further shenanigans as I wrangle with Optus, but it's definitely a short term thing.

I have a bunch of questions I can't figure out the answers to, mostly I can find general guides online but need local people to help answer them with specific answers for Perth/Australia. But general advice would be helpful too.

This ANZAC weekend was the local scifi con, Swancon. And like so many recent cons, it was online.

This was an interesting experience! I was unfortunately very sleepy this weekend so wasn't up for a bunch of content I'd been looking forward to, but participated in couple of Youtube chats via Watch2gether, which were super fun. I also submitted to and checked out the online art gallery, which was a cute virtual space you could wander around.

There were also video chats, online board games, etc. There's been a bunch of discord conversations leading up to Swancon, too, and the possibility of a bookclub etc following the con.

The first thing we watched on Youtube was the Australian production of the Phantom of the Opera Sequel musical, Love Never Dies. It was very entertainingly bad, and we all ended up shipping Meg/Christine and Phantom/Raoul more than any of the canon ships.

WA Fresh is shutting down ;_;

Does anyone know of other good places delivering custom fruit and veg in Perth? Most places seem to just do boxes of whatever's in season, which is no good to me with all my intolerances.

What I found today:
Fruit n Vegies R Us Limited range

The Good Grocer A supermarket, which tends to mean lower quality.

Also Aussie Fruit and Veg look like they could be good for anyone south of the river (which I am not).

I could also just order from Coles/Woolworths but that tends to be very poor quality.

I also try to avoid soy, coconut, and vegetable gums. Most are also gluten free, but that's not something I watch out for myself.

The first three are available internationally, for the rest you may need to be in Australia. Most are at Coles/Woolies.

I did make it in the end, but only for the Saturday. Which was lots of fun and SO MUCH LESS EXHAUSTING than going for the whole con, so I think I'll make it my default from now on.

There's no panel notes or anything, just me rambling about my day.

Thought I should mention it while I remember. (Also I just gave my self a minor burn and need a distraction, sorry if this is a bit badly worded as a result)

There's no big reason, mainly I've been finding it more of a strain on my health so we wanted to try not going and see if we regretted it. If I feel unexpectedly energetic I might take the train down for Saturday but I wouldn't count on it.

Hope you all have fun without us!

Overall the con was pretty good, as far as I can tell based on what I saw around naps.

I am having to stop myself evangelising PEA to everyone I know with chronic pain, because I know how annoying that can be. But I am glad a friend told me about it, and it may be helpful for someone out there. So I'm going to put the info under a cut and you can read or not!

My dad gave me a wooden ramp he had from his house's previous owner, and it's perfect except for being about 1cm too high. It's made of wood which has been treated with some sort of outdoor protection, and the bit that needs adapting is a like...5x5x75cm wide block under the flat bit of the ramp.

Does anyone have any suggestions for any relatively cheap, easy ways to get it shortened/lowered and then the wood treated so it doesn't rot outside? Bearing in mind that Cam and I are not the sort of people who are any good at this sort of thing, and do not own much in the way of tools. Anyone local who is good at this stuff want to deal with it for me? (worth a shot :D)

To try:

Places we actually go:

Middling Japanese

Tried, disliked:

Looks good/Used to like but they stopped delivering here:

OLD VERSION:

So after vaguely noticing the rise of Ubereats I decided to investigate the options for food delivery in Perth again, and lo! They have improved enough that there are now options I can eat available in my area!

The sites I have found and how they looked for my fairly central suburb:

  • Menulog Moderate range, what I ended up using.
  • Eatnow Similar to Menulog, but website was a little less helpful regarding opening times.
  • Ubereats Largest range. But part of Uber and thus evil.
  • Deliveroo Range has recently increased

I ended up picking Taiwanese Cafe which has a nice range of food I can eat as well as some stuff Cameron likes. And Taiwanese desserts!! I LOVE TAIWANESE DESSERTS and have had trouble finding anywhere easy to get them. The food was overall pretty good: the red bean and pearls dessert wasn't the best I've had but still satisfying, the popcorn chicken was super tasty, the teriyaki chicken bento perfectly nice, and the egg pancake a little greasy but ok. The only genuinely mediocre dish was the spring rolls.

The menulog ordering process was very painless, and the delivery guy had my number for when he got lost (our set of units has a very confusing numbering system) You're in trouble if you want ingredient lists etc, but that's true of most delivery.

Remix Revival 2017 A fanart/fanfic remix exchange with signups closing on the 30th. I think this is the first panfandom remix exchange allowing both, I'm pretty excited!

[community profile] drawesome A fanart community that has had some fun prompts

Let's Make Games and Drink Responsibly: A gathering for people in the local games community, it was a lot of fun and I had some really interesting and inspiring conversations. Cam came along and it was perfect for him, as someone who is really interested in discussing and making games but isn't working on anything right now. Also Scott Ludlum was there! (I was too shy to talk to him but he said he was happy to be among friends, which was nice to see) It's apparently going to be monthly, best way to follow it right now is probably the Let's Make Games Facebook group.
