Like, they're not too bad to use but my god the vibe is atrocious. I picked them for my newsletter cos they're free and (unlike Substack) not, to my knowledge, actively in bed with nazis. But goddamn.
Their latest "guide to growing and monetizing creator-first businesses" email started with "I recently listened to a podcast where MrBeast discussed how switching from voice actors to AI-powered software to translate one of his videos for a non-English-speaking audience created an admittedly worse product but improved the audience retention rate", a sentence near-perfectly designed to make me cringe away from my screen.
I guess the naked amoral capitalism is in some ways less gross than the "app for independent voices" thinly veiled amoral capitalism of Substack etc but urrrgh.
(now to decide if I want to crosspost this to the newsletter lol)

Can you see this poll?
If you don't have a dreamwidth account, feel free to leave a comment.
This poll serves two purposes: I'm generally curious to know who sees my posts, and also to make sure I didn't just accidentally misjudge which accounts are inactive. I cleared out a bunch of what I'm reasonably sure are dead accounts from my access circle, but there's always the chance I screwed up. I was going to get people to let me know but then you might all have "But maybe they just don't want me reading their locked posts any more??" anxiety etc, and a poll is fun regardless.
There's been a very Strikethrough-esque purging of accounts on tumblr recently. Apple removed the app because there was too much Inappropriate Content so tumblr used a highly unreliable automated process to remove accounts, and enough people have been hit that's there's a general air of "maybe this is going to be it for me and/or the site".
People have been posting links to their other social media, so! From most to least used:
I'm here(*) on dreamwidth at
alias_sqbr and
sqbr
Twitter:
sqbr
Mastodon: sqbr at im-in.space
Pillowfort: sqbr
And while I'm listing things:
Tumblr:
alias-sqbr and
sqbr
AO3:
sqbr
DeviantArt: sqbr
I also have Serious Game Developer etc accounts but I don't publicly link those to this pseudonym.
(*)Which is to say, I am making this post on dreamwidth, but this line is aimed at those reading the livejournal and tumblr crossposts, because anyone reading on dreamwidth probably knows my dw username already ;)

Yes, people I follow who have been doing that for ages, I did think you were just typing it all out consistently each time.
So, let's test it out!

If you're reading this because I added you, no stress about adding me back if you don't want! (Does that sentence make sense? I am sleepy)

Where to find me online
Jun. 1st, 2015 10:56 pmAll have image descriptions unless stated otherwise.
Discord: I have one, but feel a little weird linking it publicly. Hit me up if we know each other well enough to be DMing.
Dreamwidth:
alias_sqbr Fannish and personal stuff. Updated frequently, usually a mix of reviews, art dumps, and health stuff, for which I have a special filter.
sqbr Serious social justice discussions. Quieter than it used to be but still updated semi regularly, though posts these days are usually locked.
Livejournal:
alias_sqbr: What I used before dreamwidth, now entirely dead.
Tumblr:
sqbr Fairly active, random mix of nerdery, pretty things, and social justice.
alias-sqbr Creative things I have made. Updated semi regularly eg whenever I make something. Mostly fanart.
Twitter:
sqbr No longer used.
Mastodon:
https://aus.social/@sqbr Quiet.
Bluesky:
sqbr.bsky.social Slightly less quiet.
Creative things:
Nexus mods Currently just Stardew Valley mods. No image descriptions.
sqbr AO3: fanfic, art for exchanges or with multiple pages, the odd game or piece of original fiction.
sqbr Deviantart: art, mostly fanart
sqbr Fanfiction.net: fanfiction, no longer used
I also have Professional Artist And Game Developer stuff that avoid linking to my fannish persona publicaly but can be seen here if you're on the access list for sqbr or here for alias_sqbr.
And I have a Facebook account under my legal name which I try to keep separate from all the rest and use as little as possible.
Other than that pretty much anyone is welcome to follow any of my blogs. I'd rather noone followed me for hatereading or whatever but if you're doing that you presumably don't care.
I think that's everything!

Posts by request meme
Dec. 30th, 2013 07:08 pmNabbed from
owlmoose. I've been SUPER DISTRACTED over December but really enjoyed reading other people's posts for this meme.
Pick a date in January. Pick a topic. On the date you choose I will post something about that topic. It can be fandom-related or not. Pretty much anything you've ever seen me post about unlocked, or comment on in other venues, is fair game. If a topic is uncomfortable for me (too personal or potentially identifying) or simply something I know very little about (unfamiliar canon, say), I may ask you to make a second choice. If you want to request more than one topic, pick a different day for each.

This is my brain on fandom
Jun. 4th, 2013 09:47 pmI wrote One Lazy White Artist's Guide to Drawing Dark Skinned and POC Characters after seeing some annoying comments about how it was basically impossible.
Digging through my old posts to find some of the links I came across proof I predicted the Elementary finale, woo! (Spoilers, obviously)
I have now read every Han Gyul/Eun Chan Coffee Prince fic on the AO3 and fanfic.net (there were about 6, all fairly short) I did not read the many fics with summaries like "Hermione must pretend to be a man to work at Draco's coffee shop", or the fic where the secondary female character is sent off so that her poor woobie man can be with someone better. Ah, ff.net.
After watching the anime, thinking about it, looking up and reading long pages of discussion, rewatching the first episode ten years later, and reading some more theories on various webpages I think I finally understand what the hell was going on with those weird emails at the start of Serial Experiments Lain. Maybe. Does anyone else feel it has a certain stylistic similarity to Puella Magi Madoka Magica?
( Lain spoilers )

*flails like the social incompetent I am*
Nov. 27th, 2012 03:20 amSo I just went through and defriended a bunch of people, mostly on lj. Sorry guys. I've been putting off doing this for ages, but...ok it's hard to articulate but it's important to me to feel able to control the social environment I'm in. I don't dislike any of you though, or I wouldn't have added you in the first place.
I may well go through and do another winnowing without warning in the near future, I was on the line with some people (and couldn't remember who several of you are, oh for notes)

Non-friend commenting off at lj
Nov. 11th, 2012 09:10 amSorry everyone, but I have been getting SO MUCH SPAM. You should definitely able to comment with OpenID at dreamwidth as long as you have an lj account, but I can't remember if I have anon commenting on.
It's annoying, I really want to be open to comments from a wide variety of people, but the spammers make that difficult :/

sqbr posts you all might be interested in:
"Mini" femslash meta: Lovers in a Dangerous Time What's your approach to writing femslash in times and places that are notoriously unfriendly for f/f relationships, especially historical settings?"
Blogging about disability day: National Disability Insurance Scheme rally I went to a real rally! It was very exciting! (Ok, not that exciting. But there are pictures)
Saw the romantic comedy "Friends with benefits", I really enjoyed it. Descends a little into traditional romantic comedy tropes (including soulmates) at the end, but it mostly felt like it was about real people not A Man and A Woman, and was charming and funny. Also, Mila Kunis spends a lot of time in very little clothing.
Finally: Instead of celebrating Three Weeks For Dreamwidth with exclusive-to-DW content, I am going to celebrate it by letting my fellow DW (and LJ ;)) users pick the content. Is there something you'd like me to post about that isn't fic? Meta, episode/book/show/movie reviews (for something I've already read/seen), memes, DVD commentaries on stuff I've done, history posts, whatever; just comment here and ask for it! Weird topics you think nobody else will care about are totally acceptable, at worst I will just write a very short post :)
(modified from this post by toft. Because I was thinking of doing something like this anyway, and now have an excuse)

Ladystuck is live! And I am so happy with my gift, it's so utterly, perfectly crafted to appeal to me. They referenced my Pride and Prejudice works. And made Terezi actually kind of disabled! Also, she tried to arrest Napoleon.

Hobbits and annoying goats
Dec. 24th, 2011 10:31 amHobbit babbling A transcript of the trailer and some very interesting discussion of how the movie may incorporate various bits of Tolkien lore.
So, livejournal! These new comment settings sure are annoying, huh? If you have a paid or plus account you can use css trickery to bring back subject lines for comments and various other functionality. I have a Basic account but I don't get many comments on lj any more (and even fewer with subjects) so am not too fussed.
Also, check your livejournal account settings some people have been unknowingly signed up for automatic payments. "Luckily" we had our credit card number stolen and had to get new cards since the last time I paid for an lj account.
I don't want to be one of those dreamwidth evangelists, but if you do decide you want an account I think they're still not requiring invites right now (EDIT: not for the rest of the year), and I have plenty spare anyway.

Places I read fannish meta
Dec. 8th, 2011 04:02 pmI've seen various discussions around the place discussing good places to find interesting meta. So I decided to list everything I'm subscribed to in various ways where I could see at least two unlocked posts of at least vaguely fannish(*) meta on the first page, produced in the last few months.

Health crap filter!
Sep. 1st, 2011 05:27 pmI'm in the process of rejigging how I filter posts, so thought it would be a good idea to double check who wants to be on my health filter. So! Comment/answer the dw poll if you want to be added to or taken off my filter for posts I feel too self conscious to put under general lock. Comments are screened. If you don't respond I'll just leave you as you are.
