I'm not going to make this but it has been in my head since DA2. I think I may have described it then but I have even more fodder now because Bioware. If anyone sees this and is inspired to make a similar vid please go ahead, and let me know :)

So! The song is Videogames by Lana del Ray. The subject is the UTTER MISERY we players put up with for our pixelated love interests.

There have been a few times when a particular fanwork (usually a fanmix or vid) has permanently changed my associations with a song, and it fits so well that I can only think of it as being about a particular character/pairing/canon. For example:

  • Total Eclipse of the Heart (literal version): Revolutionary Girl Utena thanks to the vid Total Eclipse of the Heartsword
  • Girl With One Eye: Vriska from Homestuck via the fanmix Just As Horrible as Me (it's a Terezi/Vriska mix but I think of it as more of an Aradia/Vriska song)
  • Hide and Seek: Battlestar Gallactica via Meant Well: The Occupation despite TEN MILLION "mmm whatcha say" videos on tumblr
  • Cosmic Love: Puella Magi Madoka Magica (and Homura/Madoka in particular) from the vid Mahou Shoujo Requiem
  • Handlebars The Doctor, though I've seen it fit well for a number of characters.
  • Seamstress: Nikita&Alex from Nikita from the vid Seamstress

Does anyone else have any examples? Preferably where the lyrics really do fit surprisingly well. Or just songs which are remarkable fits where you thought of the connection independently.

If you don't do fanworks, I guess songs from movies/tv where it fit the scene PERFECTLY and you no longer hear it as being about the original subject. But songs written for the soundtrack don't count :)

EDIT: Hee, and here's a vid which matches an association I got from just hearing the song: Take me To Church to Lucrecia and Cesare from The Borgias. I haven't even watched the show but I have a friend who goes on about it a lot, and the song really is perfect.

Code Academy Turns learning to code into an interactive game. I only got a little way in since it's not really aimed at people who already know how to code, but what I saw looked like fun.

Men's Versus Women's Poses Trying to re-enact fantasy novel covers in real life.

Open Culture Free online stuff! I haven't actually had much of a chance to check it out but it looks pretty cool.

Some of the original draft of Peter Pan, very interesting and and in some places very different.

English language dating sims with f/f options ("parent" leads to a general f/f media rec thread)

From that list: I've been playing Magical Diary and it's RIDICULOUS AND AMAZING. It's a thinly veiled Harry Potter self insert fantasy set in the US, except with more POC and ladies and no saving the world. I keep failing my exams (the magic system is actually kind of involved, which has made the game more interesting) and eventually got expelled after one particularly unfortunate life choice, but once I get over that I intend to get back to flirting and doing Science with my adorable roommate :D I have a side playthrough where I'm seeing what happens when you date the mysterious blue-skinned bat-winged bad boy Damien (this game), and there's been some new plot elements though the basic structure is the same. It's not a deep game but I'm enjoying it :)

I found the "The Crow"/"The Dark Knight"/"V for Vendetta" vid Anarchy really interesting: I hadn't thought of the Joker and V as similar before (I haven't seen the Crow)

[personal profile] lilysea asked me for links, and I thought other people might be interested. Note that I have seen a total of one episode of Merlin, since from all accounts the way the female characters are treated in canon would just annoy me.

Also, totally unrelated, but if you're into making fanworks and feel able to, you should sign up for Kaleidoscope, which is low on participants.

I've been feeling fairly critical about things recently. So, a post of things that have been making me happy that may make you happy too.

Reading my dreamwidth network without the feeds. The ratio of stuff I want to read to stuff I don't is much more useful.

The Manga Guide to Databases by Mana Takahashi: For anyone who has wanted the fundamentals of Databases and SQL explained to them in the form of a cute manga about a princess and a fairy. No, really, it's adorable. It's not the best textbook ever, I did learn some stuff but a lot of the explanations were very shallow, I think it would work best as introduction in conjunction with a more dense text with lots of in-depth definitions. And the plot is pretty light, I can't see it appealing to anyone who isn't genuinely interested in databases (which I am, having used them at my old job with no theoretical training beyond my second year Computer Science data structures course) But I was the perfect audience, and I enjoyed it :)

The Morishima Akiko tag at daily_yuri (she can also be found at Lililicious), especially "Off Time" and "Happy Picture Diary", which both show the happy lives of adult lesbian Japanese women (as opposed to angsty schoolgirls as in a lot of yuri). Her comics are always so adorable and happy.

Some vids (mostly angsty, because angsty vids make me happy):

  • Rolling in the Deep: all the Xmen films. The Charles/Erik vid I've always wanted. (Well, it's more focussed on them rather than the broader themes than I'd like, but that's not really an objective flaw)
  • Seamstress Nikita: The Nikita&Alex vid I never knew I needed. I've watched very little Nikita but the complex codependent mentor thing hits all my buttons.
  • Don't Lose Yourself Doctor Who. Donna ;_;
  • Around Us Avatar the Last Airbender. I had to go back through a few pages of bookmarks to find something genuinely happy :)

I just finished(*) the shojo manga "Kimi ni Todoke". It's a bit slight but is adorably sweet. It's about a shy awkward 15 year old girl coming out of her shell and making lots of friends, my inner shy awkward 15 year old girl was very happy :) I was reminded of my first crush, on a guy who I also saw as kind and friendly and a million miles too cool to ever think of me that way.

Two differences I find significant are that most of the people who were nice to me on my journey into "Maybe I'm not too horrible for anyone to like" were themselves somewhat rejected by the social hierarchy rather than being the most popular kids (some popular kids were nice to me too, though), and that I was SO much more jealous and petty towards the people I liked (they were MINE).

Also! Set My World Into Motion is a very cool Dr Who vid about River Song.

I reread "Monstrous Regiment" by Terry Pratchett. It really is a great book, and I'm not just saying that because it has femslashy crossdressing women with swords fighting the Patriarchy2 :D

1)Well, the part that's online. Which happily stops in a moderately satisfying place.
2)This is my favourite niche genre of fiction

So, I finally finished Season 4 of Supernatural (well, the episodes Cam said were worth watching) and now I'm curious to read some fic and maybe see other fanworks. But most of it isn't what I'm after.

Basically, I felt the show brought up a lot of interesting stuff to do with theology and the nature of free will etc and then didn't address it very well, so I'd like fic (or art or vids) that does. Bonus points for lots of female characters, humanism, and feminism, double negative points for only caring about Sam And Dean's Unique Manpain, seeing women primarily as sex objects, or having a black and white "Just trust in God" morality.

A while ago I made a dvd of fanvids for [livejournal.com profile] lilysea. She thanked me but said she found the format (uneducational names like Bvid_26_large.avi organised in folders by how much I like them) meant it was like a packet of Berties Botts every flavour beans(*): a vid could be from any fandom, and turn out to be a humourous parody or a dark violent AU with incest manips or anything in between.

Yesterday I was making dvds of some stuff for [livejournal.com profile] tevriel and had a bunch of extra room so decided to fill it with vids (as is my wont) I decided she is probably not the sort to appreciate sudden unexpected depressing violence in her light entertainment, and that it was a good opportunity to make a folder of happy vids for future such occasions (when I just want to fill some space and the person hasn't asked for ALL my good vids).

I started chucking it together based on the feeling I got when I thought about the vid but decided I should double check the ones I couldn't remember clearly.

And, as lilysea would I'm sure agree, my lord I do like a lot of dark stuff. Even the "happy" vids I like tend to be "death and despair set to an ironically cheery tune" or "celebration of how awesome a character is through adversity *insert images of adversity*".

So tevriel, I did my best, but if some darkness got through I apologise but be aware that comparatively speaking it's still sweetness and light :) (Except the Supernatural vids folder, which is solid delicious angst)

See also the fact that my favourite genre of music is "break up songs".

    (*)My metaphor not hers :)

First the annoying: I ran out of medication unexpectedly so had to tire myself going to the dr, pay $60 consultation fee, and $30 extra for the wrong size packet (thanks again to The Worlds Most Incompetent Doctor)...only to get home and find the other packet hiding in the other side of the bathroom cabinet. bah.

    And now the happy:

    • Dawntreader is back yay!!
    • I KISSED A GIRL: This has to be the slashiest het vid ever :) Smallville, Clark/Lex and Clark/Every Girl Ever (Was that Poison Ivy?) Is it clever editing, or has the show really turned into "Lets come up with excuses to get Clark topless"? I think it gets a repetitive by the end but it amused me.
    • Apparently I am well known at my local library as "The woman who reserves the interesting books", one of the librarians said she's gone on to borrow some of them herself. This makes me happy :)
    • small tin peaches+ cup water + cup sugar makes for easy and tasty sorbet. Though I think I'll go for less water and sugar next time.

It's funny, that song annoys the hell out of me when sung from a female POV, but amuses me no end from a male POV. I wonder if the vidder had seen the Paul McDermott version?

via Hoyden about town, a real life Mary Sue Draco in leather pants AU music video (nominally het, but you could read it as Draco/Dr Doom if you had enough imagination)

Seriously, it's amazingly fantastically terrible, if you have any interest at all in watching a skinny blonde guy with a bad moustache fight dragons while playing pop music on a sparkling green guitar :D
