Before I get to it: am I being paranoid in thinking "When you click... links from Twitter.com or a Twitter application, Twitter will log that click. We hope to use this data to provide better and more relevant content to you over time. " means "we will data mine all your clicks for targeted ads"?

Anyway! Con was fun. People had told me Worldcon was like a big Swancon. And it is, including most of the same people. Seriously, just hanging about in hallways etc I kept bumping into people I know, plus (as I was told to expect) lots of expys who look like the people I know but are actually from the US or New Zealand etc.

Three fics I've found in the last few days that were EXACTLY what I was looking for in their mix of the right pairing with genuinely interesting explorations of the ideas of canon, huzzah.

Inception:

Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Arthur/Ariande. Just a nice intelligent characterisation which doesn't gloss over the dream mechanics etc. You'd think there'd be lots of fics like that but all I seem to find is Arthur/Eames.

Supernatural:

Strike Me Down and I'll Become More Powerful Than You Can Possibly Imagine Dean/Castiel and Aziraphale/Crowley, set after Season 5. A fixit fic for heaven itself.

The one thing missing from that fic is any significant female characters. But I was feeling generous on that count since I'd just read:

Holy Clockwork Angels Jo/Ruby. FEMSLASH STEAMPUNK AU. Some aspects didn't quite work for me but it's still pretty cool and the alternate world of demons and machines she's created is genuinely interesting.

Also!

James Franco makes Kirk/Spock fanart
Joshua Jackson writes fanfic (the Matt Smith fanfic referred to was an exercise he did to get into character which I'm not sure counts)

I find this rather surreal.

Title:Standing on a bridge
Creator: [personal profile] alias_sqbr
Fandom: Spiderman Movieverse
Summary: Little comic where Spiderman is Latino, drawn for Racebending Revenge challenge.

Title: Chapter 3 of "The Time Traveller's Guide to Creative Anachronism"
Creator: [personal profile] alias_sqbr
Fandom: Doctor Who
Summary: River/Amy, retroactively places the fic after "Cold Blood" and ties things up a bit more. Comes with art at the end! (Which I'm not linking since it spoils the fic)

Phew. Every now and then I try a different sort of engagement with fanworks fandom to see if it suits me, and based on Racebending Revenge plus another I tried I'd say that AUs definitely don't and challenges might not. Anyway, two recs:

Sam and Dean Winchestgopal: glockgirl continues her awesome "Sam and Dean are desi" Supernatural AU. She manages to sneak in some extra female characters too :)

Five Things People Might Have Read On The Psychic Paper (If Things Were Slightly Different) by Grey_Bard: Imagine, if you will, that the Eleventh Doctor was played by Paterson Joseph but otherwise identical. What might people see on his psychic paper?

Inspired by Flamebyrd, loosley based on this image.

Description: Dean looks seriously at a map while Sam scans the area with an EMF device. They're on an Impala antelope in front of a blurry African savanna-ish background.

EDIT: So I was feeling bad for the little antelope having to carry them when I realised: the antelope is Castiel. Trust me, it makes perfect sense. In my head, at least :)
alias_sqbr: Darkwing Duck (dw!)
Deep breaths Mary/Ellen, an AU where she told the yellow eyed demon no.
So good I can strongly rec it even to people who aren't generally into femslash (if you like femslash and clever interesting AUs and good characterisation then it's a must) I recommend reading the story then looking at the art, it's a bit spoilery.

But mainly I wanted to try out the "DW post has link to lj post" thing *points down* (those on lj can click the link to DW if you're curious, and then click back again to lj if you want :))

I really do like the way Dreamwidth keeps implementing all these cool new features that I'd always wanted.

So, I finally finished Season 4 of Supernatural (well, the episodes Cam said were worth watching) and now I'm curious to read some fic and maybe see other fanworks. But most of it isn't what I'm after.

Basically, I felt the show brought up a lot of interesting stuff to do with theology and the nature of free will etc and then didn't address it very well, so I'd like fic (or art or vids) that does. Bonus points for lots of female characters, humanism, and feminism, double negative points for only caring about Sam And Dean's Unique Manpain, seeing women primarily as sex objects, or having a black and white "Just trust in God" morality.
More details, and some recs )

This is a very weird fic for me (Swearing! Consent issues!), it's been sitting on my harddrive for like 2 months while I decided whether or not to post it but having finally finished Season 4 of SPN I decided that if nothing else it captured some of my issues with the show.

Title: Waking Up
Fandom: Buffy/Supernatural crossover
Info: Gen, M (swearing, sexual references), references to past non consensual sex (see premise) 2298 words
Summary: A crossover AU where Faith stayed in her coma from Season 3 of Buffy and became the body Ruby used in Season 4 of Supernatural.

I don't know that I deal with the subject matter very well, but it's one of those stories that once I finished it it was just done.

I've been watching Supernatural Season 4 and getting through the thick miasma of misogyny by imagining femslash AUs. This got easier once they introduced a second female character.
Anna and Ruby

Description: a Tiffany inspired pseudo stained glass of Anna (an angel) and Ruby (a demon) embracing as traditional stained glass angel and demon.

It was femslashier in my first draft, but this way works better artistically.

I also had fun with a sailor moon generator at avatar_fans but I'm not sure that counts as art :D

This is pretty much the conversation I had with Cam after reading the discussion around the comic Good fourth walls make good neighbor (where a fanfic writers partner freaks out at the idea of Sam/Dean slash after seeing the slasher character on Supernatural)

Except during the pause in panel 2 I added "Aside from laughing" :)

nb I have no interest in writing Echo/Priya. I do think Faith/Ruby has potential though.

I don't mean to minimise the experience of women who are forced to keep this sort of thing secret from their partners (or families or whatever) When I was working with kids I had paranoid fears that the fact that I was in fanfic fandom and thus in the general vicinity of what counts as child porn by Australian law (despite being heavily squicked by it and avoiding it as much as possible) would make me lose my working with children check.

Transcript:
Me: Honey, how would you feel if you found out I write Sam and Dean porn?

Cam: *Looks shocked and thoughtful*

Cam: But you hate Sam and Dean

Me: I love you

Cam: Now Echo and Priya, that I can see you writing

I have a headache and decided that doing a pencil sketch with the pencils [livejournal.com profile] mandragora2003 got me for my birthday might make me feel better (which is kind of did, though I ran out of motivation pretty quickly, thus the sketchy hair and shirt). It's possible that this doesn't look hideous to most people, but the damn eyes refused to not look wonky and it bugs me. It's fun doing hand drawn art from time to time but I always miss layers and the undo button.

I asked Cam which Season 4 Supernatural episodes I should watch, he sent me this, I thought it was as easy to save here as anywhere else and someone else might find it useful. First two by me since I'd seen them.

So, I was annoyed by the lack of female roles in Supernatural Season 1. They all seemed to fit into traditional gender roles in a really limiting way, and none had any agency. But I was told Season 2 had some good female characters, specifically Jo and Ellen. I got the impression they were actually demon hunters themselves, which seemed like a nice change from victims/demons.

*WARNING: Vague but important spoilers follow for Season 3, mild for season 2*

First: I recently read "Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science" by Atul Gawande which was quite good. It's a book of essays on surgical error: what happens, how it happens, the consequences (both personal and wide ranging) and what can and has been done. He goes into the positives and negatives of the culture of medicine as well as telling more personal stories, it was really interesting and I reccomend it to anyone involved in medicine (especially surgeons!) though I don't know how similar the australian system is to the american.

Second, I watched season one of "Supernatural". I watched the first few episodes when it was on tv but found it a bit too scary and wasn't engaged by the monster-of-the-week format. Cam eventually got into it and told me there was an interesting plot later on, but I was still put off by the fact that the premise isn't my sort of thing: you know that nothing will happen which permamently changes the basic formula of two brothers alone, moving from place to place fighting bad stuff. So there's huge limitations on where Sam and Dean's lives and relationships can go, and there's no chance for a real ensemble cast with complex unpredictable plots, which is my Thing.

And I didn't think it was that original. (nb I am feeling pretty zonked, but if I don't write this now I'll forget)

EDIT: While we're talking theft of lines, from supernatural ep "Something Wicked" (paraphrase)
Dean: Has this thing struck before?
Sam: Yes, in Ogdenville, North Haverbrook...

Spoilers for Torchwood and Supernatural (both just season 1) )
