I finally got around to finishing Season 2 of the anime Mob Psycho 100 and it was great. The show's combination of dark humour and life affirming sweetness took a little while to get used to, and is hard to get across in a review, but I feel like this vid does a pretty good job at capturing the second: Kindness. Contains moderate anime violence.

The chorus is a pretty good encapsulation of one of the main themes of the show: "You're not a monster, just a human, and you made a few mistakes. It's alright."

Another main theme is the difficulty, but vital importance, of not seeing yourself as better than other people just because you have some advantage over them, but instead having compassion and respect for everyone. We're all just human.

Swancon!

I am too foggy and sore to leave my rom but not actually sleepy, so...a con report! Expect vagueness, sorry.

First, next years con: ISOBELLE CARMODY, ANNE BISHOP AND TAMORA PIERCE OMG!!!

The only one of those authors I actually like is Tamora Pierce, and even then mostly out of nostalgia. But Isobelle Carmody literally got me into science fiction (along with Anne McCaffery, who's dead, and Orson Scott Card, who I would have trouble not shouting at) and I used to be a MASSIVE fan, I ran one of the earliest Isobelle Carmody fansites back in the 90s (people used to actually email me thinking I was her). And then she NEVER FINISHED HER SERIES and I got VERY BITTER. And then there is Anne Bishop, whose books are over the top ridiculous crack (edit: which many will find MASSIVELY TRIGGERING. She likes to throw the kitchen sink at her characters for the sake of angst). All three have Issues and it's very single genre, but I can see them all being interesting and a lot of people are VERY VERY HAPPY and so I am happy for them and also amused imagining how my 14 year old self would feel.

Anyway, onto this years con!

I’ve had a soft spot for enemyships and hateships for as long as I can remember. Since a lot of people who don’t enjoy such ships seem to find the idea bizarre I thought it would be interesting to poke at why I like them. I’d be curious to hear if other people like them for similar or different reasons.

This is way more stream of consciousness than you might think from all the headings, and is very much why I like these ships. I've given lots of examples so that hopefully you can find something to check out whatever your preferences for fandoms and fanworks.

Note: This post contains references to violence and abusive relationships, and many of the fanworks linked are quite violent indeed, including sexual violence and gore.

After a discussion with some people at the [livejournal.com profile] swooping_is_bad irc channel about the horrible wrongness that is the Anonymous movie I remembered that when I first saw the trailer it I'd thought "Oooh, I wonder what keeps the 'real' Shakespeare anonymous. Are they a women? Or gay? Or black?" And then they turn out to be some random noble dude, blech.

So. Here is the trailer recut to be about Queen Elizabeth, lesbian playwright.

I used footage from the Anonymous trailer and the movie Elizabeth. I'm really not an expert at video editing, and the original trailer was incoherent enough as it was, so I don't know how much sense it makes. Still, hopefully the basic gist gets across.

My first thought was to use footage from Shakespeare in Love, and maybe somehow make it be about Anonymous the modern spinoff of 4chan, using timetravel. But alas, we don't own the movie, and that would be ridiculously complicated, so no crossdressing time traveling lesbian playwrights for me. As it was I only managed to get the first 1/4 of Elizabeth imported, and iMovie kept crashing. Making vids is such a pain.

My white Lotus fic, huzzah! Beloved Ice, a cute little Zuko/Mai/Katara fic. Zuko/Mai and femslash, yay! Plus general happy friendshippiness ^_^

Around Us, a really good general Avatar fanvid and just the burst of happy I needed.

Why you should all watch Press Gang. I remember season 3 being really annoying so stopped my rewatch in Season 2, but maybe I should give it a shot.

It hasn't been the 17th here for like 18 hours but meh. Anyway, to celebrate:

A warning that the "Who do I write like" meme is actually a google bomb type thing or something.

Wait, that hasn't got anything to do with femslash, crap. Um. Did I mention I'm feeling reeeally woozy today? No? Yes? (What was the question again?)

I keep seeing all these fraught dramas about Dr Who shipping and apart from feeling glad I'm not really in the fandom it makes me want to ship River/Rose/Amy (ooh, or River/Martha/Rose lol) just to mess with people. (See also Morrigan/Anora/Alistair)

*pokes femslash recs* I'm pretty sure I haven't posted this here before. I have only the vaguest idea who these women are (must give "Legend of the Seeker" a go one day), but they angst prettily :D

Lightening Field by bradcpu. Legend of the Seeker. Cara/Kahlan, with a bit of C/L and some R/K.

Both very spoilery for the show, but watching them inspired me to watch the show and by the time I did I'd forgotten anything that might have spoiled me, so.

Hold me now by alkampfer81.
Apparently inspired many people in local fandom to watch the show! Captures the show really well, and very pretty to watch with all the dancing and symbolism.

Fairytale by [livejournal.com profile] arefadedaway
"Ahiru, Rue, Utena, and Anthy don’t care for your fairy tale, and make their own story."
The parallels with the women from Revolutionary Girl Utena who also refuse to be bound by their fairytale. Awesome.

And as much as I enjoyed these vids before watching the show, I love them now I know all the context. *hugs show* Though it's not as femslashy as I might have hoped from the second :)

(EDIT: clearly I need some synonyms for "show")

So I had a recs post all planned in my head and then I couldn't find the link to download it and by the time I did I'd forgotten what I was going to say. But!

Waking World-Morgana/Guinevere by Di is an awesome vid. I don't entirely understand what's happening in it (so don't ask me to explain) but have watched it like four times anyway :)

I love Morgana and Gwen centric feminist-ish Merlin vids despite having seen a total of one episode of the show. I know enough of the changes they've made to get the basic gist and enjoy them largely as commentary on the broader King Arthur mythos.

Also I have a thing for Katie McGrath :D (And Santiago Cabrera. If there's a couple I wish people would ship purely so I could watch pretty vids, it's them)

I was going to just rec Bachelorette by Obsessive24 but I decided it might be more interesting to try and think of how many other very different but equally awesome pairs (or more!) of vids to the same song I can find. In each case the vids are listed in the order I encountered them.

I decided I'd try and wash out the taste of all the Britney Spears in Cool vids to uncool music by seeing how many vids I know of using the songs of my favourite band, Radiohead. Most of these are angsty and/or violent (I loves me some angsty violence).

Really fantastic:

  • Rodeohead by Absolute Destiny. Firefly as a countrified medley of Radiohead songs. Perfect.
  • Creep by BradCPU. BTVS. Faith and Buffy and Spike. I adore this vid, it's just the kind of angst I like.
  • Paranoid Android by Bopradar. Smallville. Lex. This is an epic :)
  • Exit Music for a Witch by Lila Futuranski. Merlin. Morgana hopes that you choke.
  • Glass House by hollywoodgrrl. Merlin. Morgana and Merlin are living a in glass house.
  • Climbing up the walls by Obsessive24. Firefly, Heroes, Supernatural. Siblings. Warning: Creepy incestuous sex.

Pretty good

  • Just by hazelk. BTVS, Faith.
  • Electioneering by HumansRSuperior. Doctor Who, the Master character vid.
  • Karma Police by Super KC. Battlestar Galactica. "The final four. For a minute there they lost themselves". I'm missing a lot of the context for this.
  • Karma Police by meivocis. Life on Mars.

Only ok, but I don't know of any other vids using this song

  • Happening (to "Idioteque") Lord of the Rings, the Battle of Helm's Deep. Lacks angst!

Some of these I found via veni_vidi_vids@delicious and this like minded post.

[livejournal.com profile] ataxi pointed me towards The Coolness Index, listing the top 10 songs Last FM users are ashamed to admit they like, and I was amused by the fact that I had JUST watched two vids with songs from the top 5, and another earlier in the day. And thinking about it, catchy but uncool songs are perfect for vids which want to tell a story straight and get under your skin, and poke fun of themselves at the same time, which is one of my favourite types of vid.

So, a list of cool vids with horribly uncool music :D

  • Lady Gaga Poker Face by talitha78. Star Trek XI, great Spock-centric Kirk/Spock
  • Britney Spears, Womanizer by ImaginarySanity. Star Trek:TOS. Kirk is a womanizer. Not glorious but pretty good.
  • Katy Perry, I kissed a girl by bop-radar. Smallville "Clark experiments with heterosexuality". Hilarious.
  • Lady Gaga, Just Dance by Shoopdancer, multifandom. Just dancing :)
  • Britney Spears, Circus by butterfly. Star Trek XI, Kirk's a "put on a show" kind of girl.
  • Britney Spears, Piece of Me by obsessive24. "The life and times of Britney Spears", remarkably effective.
  • Rihanna, Disturbia by xCraZy18gurlx. Final Fantasy XII, Balthier/Fran. Ok, this is a total cheesey guilty pleasure but enjoyable for what it is :)
  • Lady Gaga, Paparazzi
  • Lady Gaga, Lovegame

Anyone got vids recs for the other songs? EDIT: See comments for some more alternatives.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a "Womanizer" vid for a fandom I'm not in at some point. EDIT: Found it:Akanishi Jin fanvid. Don't really like it that much, though the syncing of one pop star's dances to another's song was fairly well done.

  • I Wish I was an Architect, Heroes: A Sylar character vid which takes the amazing inconsistencies of Volume 3 and actually makes me believe (at least for 3 minutes or so) that it's complex characterisation.
  • Disarm, Buffy: Giles&Willow (or Giles/Willow if you like, but not so much it squicked me) Parallels their journey through the seven seasons. Chills!
  • "White" & Nerdy Psych: An adorable Gus vid with the unspoken question, why does nerdy=white?
  • Channel Hoping Supernatural: This is very amusing. SPN is recut as 12 tv shows. On Youtube, too, so it's low commitment!

Feeling Oh So Woozy today, which is very boring because I can't concentrate on anything very long and my arms hurt too much for much typing or writing or whatever (I'm all inspired re latest Wedding is Destiny chapter too!) And Dreamwidth is all well and good but I joined the veni vidi vids comm and now I have so many recs I lack the capacity to download them all. (Ok, so that's probably not so worthy of sympathy)

I REALLY want Lim to redo I am/Lamb for Bablyon 5. It will never happen but it would be awesome.

It Depends on what you pay is a Dollhouse vid to a cheery 60s showtune about rape(*). Sums up the creepiness pretty well imo. I haven't seen much of the show but whatever you opinions on how much you think the writing subverts the paradime, the camera clearly complicit.

*looks through my delicious account* So many awesome vids! No energy to rec them all!

(*)Well, not in context but you can't tell that from the lyrics

I couldn't think of anything to say to celebrate Darwin's birthday(*) when it happened. But better late than never, a vid which illustrates with educational clarity where we stand in the evolutionary chain:

Unnatural Selection: Battlestar Galactica, Terminator

(*)That's the scientist, not the city. Which makes me wonder when Perth's birthday is...

I've been hearing people going on about Scooby Road, a series of Buffy vids to the entire Beatles album "Abby Road" by Luminosity, ever since I got into fanvids. I was always too shy to ask for a copy but eventually decided to buck up the courage, and she sent me the link. She also asked what I thought, and I decided that if I was going to review it I might as well do so here :)

So, it was great. The only problem I have with Luminosity as a vidder is that she's really good, but her taste/POV is somewhat different to mine, so a lot of her very popular vids don't quite work for me (although others totally do, she has several entries on my previous post) even though I can appreciate them on an intellectual level. That was somewhat the case here if you take each vid individually, and to begin with I thought "Oh, this is ok, but it's just like watching a random sequence of Buffy vids to Beatles songs". But about halfway through the second vid it kind of clicked for me and I started thinking of each vid as a facet of a larger picture of the show, and being the total sucker I am for long-form multiple-facet connected storytelling was hooked. It's not that it tells a single narrative (other than that of the show) in any obvious way, and it doesn't even quite follow the chronology, but somehow they all tie together and follow on from each other, and the finale was very satisfying in an "end of a novel not a short story" kind of way.

Also there's a Faith vid. With sing-a-long-lyrics! *is easily pleased*

If you want a copy her email is on her site.

After last swancon I and Cam got inspired to create a panel about vids which create something new from canon, but we eventually realised we had very different things in mind so it never happened. But I was inspired by this discussion to put together the preliminary notes I made into a post.

Imagine I put some clever meta about vids here :) In short: most vids just try to distill a certain essence from canon (humour, a relationship, angst, etc) but don't actually deviate from the source that much, just choosing which aspects to highlight.

Which is fine, but these are the different sorts I could could think of that don't do that: they either create a new altered version of canon, deconstruct it, or create something totally different.

So you know how I spent ages angsting about making a fan comics community, because none existed? And then made one?

Well it turns out there's been another one around since June :)

Mine: [livejournal.com profile] fan_comics
Theirs: [livejournal.com profile] fancomiccentral

They have quite restrictive posting guidelines though so I don't think I would have been happy if that was the only place to post. They also have a nice backlog of strips to read :)

In the process of thinking about what I might post there I was reminded of the very talented [livejournal.com profile] astridv (check out her profile for links to her stuff) and from there came across this cute vid of SGA credits in the style of House.

I filled in my empty days stuck at home this month with the endless variety of the internet, specifically fanvids, which kept me happy right until I completely used up our quota (on and off peak)

First, The closest thing England has to a space program: the tv show Top Gear launches a space shuttle made out of a car (overall, according to Cam the "challenges" Top Gear dvd was very entertaining and well worth the cost of rental) Here's a bit about what Reliant Robins look like when not attached to a rocket

Secondly, a fanvid: Creep by BradCPU. Spike+Faith/Buffy+angst+Radiohead=love! Listening to the Coverville special consisting entirely of covers of "Creep", I was struck at how perfect it would be for a Spike/Buffy vid from Spikes POV (specifically, using a disconcertingly cheery cover and poking at the fact that Spike is not the lovable woobie he thinks he is, but that's just me) This is that vid, plus much more, and way better. It gives me chills, people. Chills!
