alias_sqbr: Dagna from Dragon Age reaching for a book (dagna)
First, two sensible links: A set of posts about a chronic pain class, a lot of this matched stuff I've learned from chronic illness myself, though some didn't.

A nice perspective tutorial from [personal profile] astridv.

And now unabashed fannishess.

If there were Barryaran political RPF fanvids, they would look like this: Russian vids to a Vorkosigan fan rock opera.

All the Ladystuck works are out, and many of them are fantastic. Again, no real points for guessing which ones are mine, though one is slightly harder than usual. Here's the Ladystuck works I've bookmarked. There are MULTIPLE femslash fancomics, and THREE Rose/Terezi fics. This makes me happy.

And just as my dance card was looking empty…[livejournal.com profile] dragonagewomen, a female-character centric challenge for my other main fandom. Plus [community profile] newgameplus is probably going to be running a computer game fandom remix challenge including art, which should be super fun.

I started watching the anime Gintama and it is VERY SILLY. It's about a Japan colonised by aliens in the Edo era, and seems to basically be samurai + pop culture references + scifi + random shenanigans. Also the main character Gin looks like a white haired version of Shin from the anime of Gokusen, it's disconcerting.

I also started watching Capital Scandal, A Korean live action comedy/romance tv show set in Japanese occupied 1930s Korea. It seems to be a mix of fun 30s shenanigans with fighting-against-the-evil-occupier war drama, I'm quite enjoying it so far but it's an interesting contrast to Gintama!

First: I have a bunch of somewhat dried out Fimo in various colours if anyone in Perth wants it. It's still useable, but a bit crumbly, so you'd want to be making something simple where you don't mind a rough texture. You could probably put new fimo over the top to get a nicer surface. There is apparently stuff you can buy to make it less dried out.

Second: Some time ago I installed Photoshop Elements on my laptop (it came free with my tablet) and have been using it for most of my art since then. The smaller screen and lack of features was a bit limiting at first but in some ways it was good to be forced to keep things simple and it's been fine for most purposes. A couple of recent pictures would have been be impractical without grouping layers so I drew them on the larger desktop machine with a full version of Photoshop and was struck at the difference to both using the laptop and to what it was like using the desktop machine before.
I REALLY appreciated being able to use all those extra features again (once I remembered where everything is) but also I think my process has become more streamlined and my art more loose and spontaneous after being forced to work within the extra limitations. I think I'll switch between the two computers from now on, keep me on my toes :)

Third: Art! All done on the desktop machine, as it happens.

I linked this already but not properly, so you get it again. The other two are based on prompts and went into my scraps, so no previews.

Yes, that's right, the other Avatar.

Avatar minus Jake Scully
Gen, 3 comic pages with transcripts.

Summary: Before I watched "Avatar" I saw someone saying how much better it would be without the character of Jake Sully. Since the movie was VERY DULL I started imagining how much more awesome that would be and drew this comic when I got home.

Overall my opinion of the movie is that it was pretty (if sometimes garish)... and dumber than a box of rocks. And the "White guy casts off human/white guilt (and also disability) by becoming the bestest most special Native and leading them to victory and marrying the chief's feisty daughter" plot was exactly as terrible as I thought it would be. (You may ask: so why did you watch it? Because it was [livejournal.com profile] distantcam's birthday and he really wanted to see it. I did manage to turn my brain off and enjoy the film as cool 3D eyecandy a moderate amount of the time)

Mafdet, Slayer of serpents, a silly little Stargate comic I made. Whether it's movie canon or SG1 canon depends on how you squint, both are somewhat contradicted by the vague attempt at historical accuracy so it's all a bit of a mish-mash :)

Somewhat inspired by [livejournal.com profile] velithya's story Momentary Paws about Tony Stark turning into a kitten :D

It really does feel like my likelyhood of being inspired to write about something is inversely proportional to how much I know about it. On the plus side, I'm pretty sure that after a afternoon or so of googling I know more about ancient and modern Egypt than your average Stargate writer...

I may get it beta-ed at some point (I certainly intend on waiting a bit then going back and fixing the dialogue and spelling etc), but right now I can't be bothered. I've decided I just need to write more rather than worrying too much about making everything perfect, if nothing else it's very cathartic getting down my personal canon/things I feel canon lacked (like giving the ancient Egyptians any agency..)

So you know how I spent ages angsting about making a fan comics community, because none existed? And then made one?

Well it turns out there's been another one around since June :)

Mine: [livejournal.com profile] fan_comics
Theirs: [livejournal.com profile] fancomiccentral

They have quite restrictive posting guidelines though so I don't think I would have been happy if that was the only place to post. They also have a nice backlog of strips to read :)

In the process of thinking about what I might post there I was reminded of the very talented [livejournal.com profile] astridv (check out her profile for links to her stuff) and from there came across this cute vid of SGA credits in the style of House.

So you know how a while ago I said I was trying to resist the urge to create a fancomics community? Well, I eventually gave in: behold, [livejournal.com profile] fan_comics!

My plan, however, is to not promote it very much, at least for a while. And yes, I did post 14 posts in one day, they'd been building up every time I thought about making it but didn't. I accidentally posted one here yesterday instead but you guys seemed to enjoy it so no harm done :) I can see me not posting again for ages, which may disappoint anyone who does happen to join.

*feels a great sense of relief*
