I wrote One Lazy White Artist's Guide to Drawing Dark Skinned and POC Characters after seeing some annoying comments about how it was basically impossible.

Digging through my old posts to find some of the links I came across proof I predicted the Elementary finale, woo! (Spoilers, obviously)

I have now read every Han Gyul/Eun Chan Coffee Prince fic on the AO3 and fanfic.net (there were about 6, all fairly short) I did not read the many fics with summaries like "Hermione must pretend to be a man to work at Draco's coffee shop", or the fic where the secondary female character is sent off so that her poor woobie man can be with someone better. Ah, ff.net.

After watching the anime, thinking about it, looking up and reading long pages of discussion, rewatching the first episode ten years later, and reading some more theories on various webpages I think I finally understand what the hell was going on with those weird emails at the start of Serial Experiments Lain. Maybe. Does anyone else feel it has a certain stylistic similarity to Puella Magi Madoka Magica?

Reading up reminded me that Lain has three personalities, the quiet human girl, the self confident online avatar, and the trickster. All three are written differently, the trickster's name being written in English/Latin letters...which is how Lain logs into her Navi when she gets the email from "Chisa".

I'd have to rewatch it all to be sure, but I think the show starts at the point that her three selves start trying to re-coalesce (how long they've been separate is another question)

Chisa commits suicide at the start (possibly prompted by Lain) and is probably 100% dead. Trickster!Lain takes on Chisa's form to both mess with human!Lain and try to persuade her to log onto the Wired. All the stuff about losing her physical form is what the non-corporeal parts of her want her to do.

Or maybe not! It has been a very long time since I watched the whole thing.

I'm not sure I'll rewatch it all, I remember a bunch of disturbing things happening I'm not sure I'm up for rewatching, and I'll probably enjoy it more as a vague nostalgic blur of 90s anime weirdness.
But rewatching the first episode knowing that Lain is the personification of the Goddess of Information (...or whatever it is she is) was certainly interesting.
