I'm at aus.social/@sqbr, moved from the tiny server I was on previously because aus.social felt more robust. I have no specific reason to think the moderator of the tiny instance would shut it down randomly or moderate a messy situation badly, but I feel more confident that the multiple moderators at aus.social won't. And the rules and people seem ok, though I mostly lurk and haven't had much interaction with either.

Overall I like Mastodon ok, my main issue is it's like a quieter twitter and I never liked twitter much in the first place. I lurked there and I lurk here. But it has overall been more chill and friendly.

I was curious to see how the ages of my followers varied over various social media. As expected, dreamwidth skews slightly older. But it was also interesting to see how the responses varied in other ways.

Ages:
A graph of various social media account ages, all very low at 1950s and peaking at 1980s before going low again at 1990s. Full details below

There's been a very Strikethrough-esque purging of accounts on tumblr recently. Apple removed the app because there was too much Inappropriate Content so tumblr used a highly unreliable automated process to remove accounts, and enough people have been hit that's there's a general air of "maybe this is going to be it for me and/or the site".

People have been posting links to their other social media, so! From most to least used:
I'm here(*) on dreamwidth at [personal profile] alias_sqbr and [personal profile] sqbr
Twitter: [twitter.com profile] sqbr
Mastodon: sqbr at im-in.space
Pillowfort: sqbr

And while I'm listing things:
Tumblr: [tumblr.com profile] alias-sqbr and [tumblr.com profile] sqbr
AO3: [archiveofourown.org profile] sqbr
DeviantArt: sqbr

I also have Serious Game Developer etc accounts but I don't publicly link those to this pseudonym.

(*)Which is to say, I am making this post on dreamwidth, but this line is aimed at those reading the livejournal and tumblr crossposts, because anyone reading on dreamwidth probably knows my dw username already ;)

There was some discussion on twitter about how appalling twitter is, and since Mastodon seems to be the most popular alternative I decided to check it out. And then the helper tool led me to an instance that let me be sqbr@im-in.space and I had to join.

Anyway, if you have an account add me so I have someone to follow! I can't really speak to whether it's a good social network since my network right now is just me and the status account, but it seems ok for posting and stuff. And I know I have seen interesting looking people mention having accounts, so next time that happens I can follow them.

Ello!

Made an ello account but THEY DON'T HAVE TAGS so I can't see me using it much. It has the instant posting style of facebook and twitter if that appeals to you, and I will follow people there if I have to. You have "friends" and "noise" filters (flattering haha) but I don't think you can lock posts. Also you seem to be stuck with a black on white colour scheme.

As I recall it was briefly the New Darling on tumblr for not having Facebook's real names policy, but then the owners did something dodgy like...dealing badly with harassment or something? Personally I'm sticking with dreamwidth and tumblr, with facebook/twitter/ello etc mainly used for grudging replies to those of you without the good taste to prefer the same social networks as me.

(I'm actually alias_sqbr a few places, plus a few other names, but this looked cooler :))

[Poll #1372284]

I looked back over my twitter feed today, apart from the replies to other people's tweets I could be adequately modeled by an AI which spit out an equal mix of geek links, tv comments, and health complaints.

So I decided to get a twitter account. Because I don't have enough to do online :)

I'm sqbr. I don't plan on having anything important there that won't also be here. And as I'm sure you've all already noticed, the scope of my genius is rarely succinct enough to be contained in a mere 140 characters :D
