HMM. I mean. None of the ones where monsters attack civilians at random? Also something with like...internet and good health care, and no Evil Corporations/Empires owning/threatening everyone. And not just the real world because that's boring.

I think...Glitch, maybe? MMOs give the best sense of really living in a world indefinitely, and I think that's the MMO world I've found most warm and comforting. Also, it had technology, as I recall. And energy resets, an ungendered society, and hell is just a cool place to jump.

The original game doesn't exist any more but there's a reboot which gives some idea. The fact that the world STOPPED EXISTING is kind of a downside I guess...

Maybe something like Stardew Valley then, but one of the less angsty variants like World's Dawn. Energy resets, magic, internet, and nobody trying to kill you. Sounds good.

My day in either case would be like...being a science communicator, probably? What with having lots of energy, and all the fun weird 'science' to learn and explain :D That plus I'd be doing the daily tasks required to build up RIDICULOUS PILES OF WEALTH, can't forget that.

I've been feeling the need for a non binary icon, and playing Children of Ur yesterday reminded me of the non binary god Tii. Who is also the god of maths :D I'm sure there other times a giant tentacled eyeball will be a useful icon, too.

Not sure how the transparent image will look against various backgrounds but I'll have to wait and see!

Oh! And updating my icons made me realise not all of them had image descriptions, oops. Sorry to anyone who's been frustrated by that in the past. Have fixed that here, off to check [personal profile] sqbr.

Glitch is gone :( Here is a screenshot I took right at the end, since I know a lot of people ended up falling off the server before that. They played Goodnight groddle and I felt like crying.

In happier linking-from-tumblr-ness, here's a wheelchair optimised outfit I decided to document.

I got food poisoning over the weekend, which made all my medications stop being absorbed, which made everything SUPER FUN. Seem to be over it now thank god.

Oh and speaking of things ending, I have basically finished my game programming in Python course: I've seen all the lectures and done the final assignment, I just have to wait until it's time to do peer grading and then get my mark. It was a lot of fun, and I recommend future incarnations to anyone else who wants a light course on the subject. I have all the lectures saved if you're put off by the idea of signing up for a course.

Glitch is closing :( :( :( It's so melancholy there now, though the developers have thrown out all the stops by lowering times/costs of things and releasing a bunch of content they'd been saving for later, there's a sort of doggedly festive end of the world vibe.

I haven't found an alternative but did get around to checking out StoryNexus, a game making and playing website from the creators of Echo Bazaar. I had a brief go making a game, which was fun, and also really enjoyed [personal profile] yhlee's game WinterStrike, even if I did end up constructing a maze of frozen corpses and wondering where I went wrong.

Today I FINALLY got around to using the Jackson's voucher I got for my birthday last year. Since it was about to expire I was open to large purchases...and left with a SEVENTY DOLLAR box of pencils. They are very nice pencils though (Faber Castell Polychromos) The Subiaco store isn't SUPER accessible but I could get in and park and the staff were very helpful. They also recognised the Firefly "I can kill you with my brain" shirt I was wearing :D (Which got me a number of confused frowns from passer's by as I went past in my wheelchair, as well as a look of EXTREME CONCERN from a little girl I shared a lift with)

After that I explored a bit and checked out Farmer Jack's supermarket in an arcade just off Rokeby road. They have CHESTNUT PASTE (soooo nice with almond butter) and ALMOND MILK ICECREAM. I sat staring sadly at the latter since (a) It was full of chocolate and (b)I was way too far from home to buy anything frozen. I think I will have to return with Cam and the car and buy it anyway, even if it is $14 for four tiny icecreams. They have a much wider range of coconut milk based icecreams if any of you dairy free peeps are into that.

Two unexpected signs of my impending BNFdom: I just had someone ask to translate one of my fics for a russian language interfandom battle (GO ATLA), and I have also apparently been chosen as a "featured user" on delicious. Either they have a lot of featured users or they are really desperate, I hope anyone who gets sent my way likes fanfic...

But speaking of delicious they have suddenly started showing people's real names! (Or at least what they think are our real names) Check your account, people!

I went to the Swancon programming meeting last week, it was lots of fun, and I only volunteered for one panel! I'm doing Interactive Fiction, which StoryNexus is nicely relevant to. On that note I shall preserve this interesting discussion from tumblr and bid you all adieu.

A bunch of people on my flist/reading list have gotten into this game recently, and since I've been playing for over a year I thought I'd offer some tips.

First: feel free to add me! Just let me know who you are if it's not obvious from your username :) My two accounts are Sequoia Baer and Allie S Squibber. Be warned that my mix of extroversion and social anxiety can be disconcertingly awkward in realtime...

Second: Feel free to ask me for help in game, especially if you haven't quite got the right skills to achieve something yet (Sequoia Baer is the older account so is better qualified to do this) I LOVE helping people out, and the game really encourages friendliness and generosity. There's also Live Help and the forums if you can't figure something out or hit a bug.

Now some general advice:

Read the book "Dime Store Magic" by Kelly Armstrong and quite enjoyed it, despite disliking the first book in the series, Bitten. As with that book the heroine spends the start of the book shouting at the male love interest to get lost, but in this case it's just the result of unfortunate circumstances and he's actually a pretty sweet guy. I am wondering if it's a pattern though, I'm all for romantic conflict but heroines learning to be less loud and angry is not my ideal form of escapism. Anyway: urban fantasy/horror with nice worldbuilding, likeable characters, lots of relationships between women and an exciting plot. There is still some gender essentialism (WHY URBAN FANTASY WHY) but I managed to mostly ignore it.

My Python programming class continues to be easy and fun. They have a competition to create educational videos, the ultimate winner of which will receive an iPad. I lack the energy to make them alas, but here is a cute one by one of my 11 year old classmates. Makes me want to play around in screencast-o-matic.

My laptop keyboard is acting up, I'm using a USB keyboard and it is a PAIN.

Am up to episode 17 of Season 2 of Fringe and quite enjoying it. I inhaled a bunch but am taking a break since I kind of like where the characters are at and get the feeling things are about to get intense. I like all the characters, I don't want them to be sad/dead/written out etc!

Kaleidoscope reveals tomorrow!

I made an alt in Glitch called Allie S Squibber, playing again from the start has been super fun. I do still enjoy the ease of playing with my overpowered regular character, though, and look how pretty she is right now. (EDIT: More friends are always good! FYI Sequoia Baer is a higher level and thus more helpful if you ever find yourself in need of someone to plant a tree on your street for your pigs to eat etc)

So cold. Plus I have a cold, which really doesn't help. Blech.

I've put a riddle or two on my glitch home street. I also dressed my glitch in longer hair and a warm jacket, it made me feel better :)

Perth peeps: Mathematics and Women: 36 years at The University of Western Australia See my head Phd supervisor talk about her fascinating life.

Also does anyone know where a person could get wheelchair or even bike flags locally? I guess I could buy one online.

Livejournal just sent me a message letting me know I can access my scrapbook now that it's been migrated to the new system. Which surprised me, since last I heard it got wiped after my paid account expired a year or so ago. Naturally I went through and saved all the pictures I cared about before lj realise their mistake.

Most were pretty boring, but there was a collection of haircut pics which will be useful for future reference, and this image back from my working days of [livejournal.com profile] tommmo with a tissue box on his head saying "Me! Draw me!" and [livejournal.com profile] thanners saying "Argh my soul!" for reasons which made sense at the time.

Also: thanks to a Glitch glitch I got all the furniture I was playing with during the house beta for free. Some of this stuff costs real money! ..and then in the process of trying to fit it into my existing decor I decided to bite the bullet and pay for a subscription so I could make a genuinely pretty house. WELL PLAYED TINY SPECK.

Here's a picture of my prettiest room, the ground floor, which is very symmetrical with a mossy floor, sea themed wallpaper, butterflies, various tree themed decorations, and coloured storage boxes filled with herbs. (The coloured storage boxes were the only thing in this room I got for free) There's also icons on the ground, which give blessings sometimes when you walk past them.

Gooood morning flist and dwircle! I am feeling incredibly happy in a fluttery way about two different things but they're both kind of new and delicate so I shall just squee cryptically bwahaha and talk about Glitch instead.

There have been a bunch of updates recently, and it is currently down (or I would be playing :)) presumably for EVEN MORE.

One thing which may be interesting even to non-players is that experience points have been replaced with "imagination". In some ways this is just a rename, but as well as your total earned imagination controlling what level you're at you can also spend imagination on various things: upgrading your house (currently free while they test it) and upgrade cards that do things like increase your energy capacity or give extra imagination for certain tasks. There's also way more opportunities to get random bursts of imagination from coins while exploring the world.

I suddenly noticed that my glitch character looks a bit like Jake and Jane from Homestuck, so I dressed her up as them:

Photobucket Photobucket
An orange person with shirt brown hair and a bucktoothed smile in a labcoat, shoes, and ghost shirt in green and blue respectively. In the first they're next to a blue skinned character, in the second they're next to several other characters and a giant slug monster with a moustache.

Not a super close match but it amuses me anyway. And yes, she is wearing a skirt/shorts, you just can't see it. I felt like a bit of a creeper wandering around looking for blue skinned women to photograph myself next to.

I looked at the cover for the latest issue of Skip Beat and decided I'd had enough of Ren and his stupid angsty face. Call me if it ever becomes about Kyoko again.

I keep thinking I'm done with Glitch and then something new and fun happens. The other day I decided to find the key to the locked door in Subarna Spells, and in the process had a nice conversation with others waiting for it to respawn (I eventually got bored, came back an hour later to see some still waiting and found it on the ground) Then I got in and it was so much fun:people jump from ledge to ledge and when they see a sparkly rock respawn shout out the location then everyone converges at once to mine it in seconds before moving on to the next one. Then I decided to check out one of the other hidden key locations, and found a note inviting people to join a group for user generated quests. So I checked one out, but got stuck…and while wandering around encountered an invite to an unrelated party. When I arrived only the host was there, but we had a nice chat and they gave me all their leftover food (any day that results in free food is a good day, even if it's virtual)

I find this Supernatural fan film interesting. From what I've seen, Counteragent and Naomi Novik both produce fannish works which are of high quality but way too in love with male characters for my tastes, and Supernatural girl!Sam/Dean fanfic tends to feel like regular fic with the pronouns changed to me, but I'm wondering if that fact that there's actual women playing the characters would make any difference. I quite liked [livejournal.com profile] swirlygate, but that didn't take itself at all seriously. Anyway, even if it doesn't end up being my sort of thing I think it's a cool idea.

What are some good names for pigs, chickens and butterflies?

I've gotten to the point in Glitch where I can rename the animals that wander around. I don't want to undo other people's choices too much but enjoy improving the ones with crappy names like "a" or "poop".

Names can't be too long, can be one word or two, and the animal is described as "A Chicken Named X" etc.

Names used or planned on thus far:

Chickens: Archaeopteryx, Utahraptor, Flu, Korma, Parmigiana, Tandoori, Gonzo, Camilla, Cockatrice, Pingu, Thoth, Feathers, Buckbeak,Witherwings, Dromiceiomimus, Ginger, Bunty

Piggy: pudding, Link Hogthrob, Julius Strangepork, In Space, Freyr, Wilbur

Butterflies: Sierpinski, Tavros, Vriska, Aradia, Nonlinear Dynamics, Julia Set

General: After You

I wanted to use "After Someone Obscure" but it's too many words. Maybe I'll use "In Joke".

A comic I made about playing the online game Glitch:

Glitch on DeviantArt
(It's not very readable on Tumblr, since DA can be weird for some people the transcript is below the cut)

I'm actually quite enjoying the game, and the slightly off kilter sense of humour charms me more than it weirds me out. I have three invites if anyone's interested. The fact that I just got given a quest to give gifts to lower levelled players is pure coincidence.

I think this is the first MMORPG I've played. I don't know how it compares to others, but basically you get given little quests and go around gathering/refining items, exploring, and learning skills (which often prompt new quests) I've found the rate of new quests etc has been about right to keep it fun, especially now I've bought an extra big bag so I can wander around harvesting stuff without having to juggle my inventory. It's totally free, but you can pay for appearance changing items and teleport tokens (otherwise you walk or take the train) I haven't taken much advantage of the social aspect and most of it's pretty solitary but you are encouraged to work together and do each other favours to some extent, plus there's global/local/private chat and groups (I've joined the dreamwidth group)

If you already have an account my avatar's name is Sequoia Baer.
