(this is the final DLC for Dragon Age Inquisition, and ties up the story)

Just finished it! At 2am! COULD NOT STOP PLAYING. IT WAS GREAT. Soooooooo much better than the other DLCs. It felt like the actual proper end to the story, which is great unless you are one of the people whose system can't play it, I feel for those guys.

Oh non spoilery reminder: this happens after the end of the game, and also costs 8 power. So I waited all day to play it...then realised I had to get that inquisitor to the end of the game, and THEN get 8 power (the Descent DLC used up all my extra power for boring sidequests)

And now...SPOILERS.
Spoilers!! )

Anime:
Diabolik Lovers (ep 1): So since I'm making a dating sim about vampires it made sense to watch the anime adaptation of the Dating Sim About Vampires. But as expected it was really not my thing: it's all creepy vampire dudes stockholm syndroming the sweet protagonist. At one point a sexy evil lady vampire showed up briefly but I looked up spoilers and that plot does not go anywhere I'd enjoy. Still, it was interesting as research, and now I'll know more context when people talk about it.

Games:

Monument Valley: fantastic, beautiful, understated little phone puzzle game. You are a little girl wandering minimalist fantasy landscapes with Escher-esque topology that uses forced perspective in very creative ways. I found it fairly easy, there are a few minor timing puzzles I didn't always like. It reminded me a lot of Journey.

Descent (Dragon Age Inquisition DLC): really not worth $25, but otherwise moderately entertaining Deep Roads story. Focused very much on two not very interesting DLC-only NPCs with basically no other background characters and nothing for the companions to say or do. Some mildly interesting environments and dwarf related worldbuilding, but the (level adjusted) fights were difficult and dragged on and on, making the fun bits feel stretched out. Sidequests were dull as dishwater.

Cute Demon Crashers: Cute free sex positive dating (well, friends with benefits) sim. A college girl gets to know 3 incubi and a succubus and possibly has sex with one. Strong emphasis on consent and fluffy happiness: you can say no at any time and there are no bad endings. I did the f/f path and it was endearing but a bit too sex focussed for me (which I knew it would be but THE ART WAS TOO CUTE) The demons are all aromantic, it's the fantasy of the perfect calm, knowledgeable, non judgemental older partner with no expectations who wants nothing for themselves but to make you happy. Which is not really my thing (I prefer pining losers haha) but is certainly a contrast to the Diabolik Lovers style love interest.

Dark Parables: Ballad of Rapunzel: Servicable continuation of this series of fairy tale themed hidden object games.

Love Chronicles: Salvation: really quite terrible hidden object game. I didn't mind the previous games in the series but this is set in a demon underworld and is just ugly and unpleasant, and the puzzles aren't much fun.

So I took a break from Dragon Age Inquisition for a while but then the Black Emporium came out and look at how pretty my babies are now. There's no new options, but I am terrible at character creation, especially since it kept crashing on me. This way I can edit, check it out in different lighting, then edit some more.

I still didn't feel like playing, but then tonight I was awake and sore and grumpy and decided I would distract myself by KILLING A DRAGON aw yiss.
Killing dragons is how you get boys to notice you )

Oh and of course I have to finish the Jaws of Hakkon!

So [personal profile] fred_mouse asked me to write about my headcanons for romances I've played and I was so UTTERLY BAFFLED by the idea that anyone actually enjoys me talking about this kind of thing I stalled for like a month.

So I'm just going to go through relationships my PCs have had and see if I have anything to say about each.

To make up for not being able to "finish" a story since fanfiction.net is down and I can't crosspost.

Finally finished Ferdi's game and have done everything I wanted to see and can imagine myself doing, and have watched videos for the rest. So now if I play again (and I don't think I will for a while) I can just let things go where they want naturally. And I can read fic without worrying about spoilers.

Cam is on holiday so I am distracting myself with a new Dragon Age character. I'm having a lot of fun so far!

I wasn't having fun with Tim, partly because he turned out to be a homorantic asexual dude which is not a group well served by the romances.

Thus Ferdi Cadash, a dual weilding male dwarf rogue. A photo of Ferdi with description.

Again I found myself writing a novel in repsonse to a link on tumblr, but this time I actually agree with it, I just got too wordy :)

BIOWARE MAKES STRANGE BEDFELLOWS: SEX & CONSENT IN RPGS

I find it a bit odd she gives Dragon Age as an example of a series where romance always leads to sex, and uses Solas the the headline image, when there isn't any sex in the Solas romance. There's none in Josephine's either, and apparently the developers did this deliberately for asexual players (though I have no source for this).

But I agree with her overall point. There's no reason romance has to lead to sex, and the fact it almost always does, and that the player may find their characters having sex when all they explicitely agreed to was love, is really unfortunate.

Have started properly playing Tim, the ernest Andrastian Qunari mage. It's funny how characters take on a life of their own once you play them, he's usually very sedate but has these flashes of grumpiness especially when people are bigoted. I guess he's more Leliana like than I was expecting. But he ADORES Casandra omg. Not sure if it's romantic, and have to see how he feels about Bull and Dorian (who are my planned LIs) but right now I see them being total bffs.

Playing as an Andrastian does give a different perspective on the game, I actually feel sad about the Chantry's problems. Also everyone is so tiny and adorable when you're a male qunari. Curious too see what talking to Bull is like.

I wrote some fic! This may not seem very exciting but I haven't written any fic in over a year. Which is to say, not since shortly before my life fell into UTTER CRAP for a while. Hooray for life being less crap and a new Dragon Age game :)

So playing an ambitious, violent, snarky "screw the chantry" elf continues to be fun as I near the end of the game. Right now I am at level 17 and about 38 hrs playtime, things are definitely going faster than last time.

Overall: really liked it! I think I got a but overhyped about it being better than the previous games: it was, but was still the same basic kind of game. Which I like! But part of me hoped for something more unexpected.

No major spoilers, all stuff I would have wanted to know going in )

It's not a real Bioware game unless you end up staring at your screen in horror thinking "What have I done?".

I try to go with the decision I feel in my gut that I'll regret least, balancing being in character, interesting plot, not feeling gross (eg I am ALWAYS anti slavery, even if it makes sense in the universe, unless I KNOW that choice is actually worse for the slave(*)), and gameplay advantage. And I have tried REALLY HARD not to go back to previous saves and change my mind unless I genuinely misunderstood what the question was asking, reminding myself that a character who screws up and is left traumatised is an interesting character.

Marijn Cadash is turning out to be more and more interesting.

SPOILERS )

(*)Yes the fact that I have had to make this choice multiple times does say something unfortunate about Bioware's writing decisions. See also: all the times I had to decide whether or not to commit genocide, and all the mercy killings of disabled people. Sigh.
