Dragon Age Inquisition: SPOILERY THOUGHTS
Nov. 26th, 2014 09:59 pmIt's not a real Bioware game unless you end up staring at your screen in horror thinking "What have I done?".
I try to go with the decision I feel in my gut that I'll regret least, balancing being in character, interesting plot, not feeling gross (eg I am ALWAYS anti slavery, even if it makes sense in the universe, unless I KNOW that choice is actually worse for the slave(*)), and gameplay advantage. And I have tried REALLY HARD not to go back to previous saves and change my mind unless I genuinely misunderstood what the question was asking, reminding myself that a character who screws up and is left traumatised is an interesting character.
Marijn Cadash is turning out to be more and more interesting.
Spoooooooilers
SO....
I killed Hawke today.
And then a little later I had to decide if I wanted to kill my boyfriend as well /o\
I seriously thought about leaving Blackwall to die, it would have been the right thing to do. But it wasn't the most interesting thing to do. And I want to see how the romance plays out. IT CERTAINLY GOT MORE INTERESTING. If there's one thing I've learned from Bioware games is that I love me some self hating dudes with blood on their handsespecially kneeling at my feet in chains, saying "I must obey your orders" in a bitter voice. Feeling gross about breaking the rule of law though.
The decision about Hawke was much more meta: I just don't feel right killing an NPC to save one of my PCs, even one I'm not controlling. It feels way too narcisistic. Also Alistair is more useful to the world, as a possible heir to Ferelden and reliable Grey Warden commander, and more interesting to the plot, as Fiona's son (I think?) and the godbaby's father (I like to imagine Fiona and godbaby hanging out and talking magic, even if they don't know the connection. She is definitely the nicer grandma)
Maybe next time, though. VARRIC WAS SO SAD ;_; And I'm sure Fenris and Bethany are sad too, offscreen.
I accidentally spoiled myself for Hawke vs Alistair/Stroud being a choice, and also that Blackwall was Not What He Seemed. Ultimately while the first choice made me sad it didn't hit me in the chest and then eat away at me like the Blackwall choice. Marijn used her power corruptly to save her murderous boyfriend this does NOT BODE WELL.
Marijn started out sensible and honest and stable, but she's beginning to crack under the pressure. She's stopped saying "But I'm not the Herald of Andraste. I DON'T EVEN BELIEVE IN ANDRASTE" quite so much. It's just so useful having people worship her. I can see the power corrupting her without me particuarly aiming for that kind of arc and it's great. At some point either her decision about Blackwall or the choice to let the mages be equal partners is going to bite her in the ass and she won't deal with it well at all.
It didn't occur to me until I started writing this post that there's this repeated theme of power corrupting initially good people and organisations, and people asking what the Inquisition will turn into once Corypheus is defeated. I initially thought the Quest was to seal the breach, but doing that just got the game properly started. Is defeating Corypheus going to be the same? I have what claims to be the operation to do so sitting on my war table already and I'm only 50 hours into what is at the very minimum an 80 hour game. HMMMMM.
Also: MORRIGANNNNNN :D :D :D I love her SO MUCH. I also adore Cassandra. Prickly straight girls and self hating dudes with blood on their hands, that's me.
(*)Yes the fact that I have had to make this choice multiple times does say something unfortunate about Bioware's writing decisions. See also: all the times I had to decide whether or not to commit genocide, and all the mercy killings of disabled people. Sigh.
