"Dragon Age: Leliana's Song" fanart by me: Group Hug! No thumbnail since the number of people who played this game is tiny. No spoilers, though.

Hopefully at some point I will feel awake enough to answer the comments on some of my previous random-things posts, but for now I shall clear out my tags.

An experiment I did reposting a comment on a locked post to twitter (I didn't crosspost it since it was an lj-specific experiment) EDIT: Some very detailed experiments with the new pingback settings.

This is my pimp cane A picspam/description of some of the enjoyable things about Legend of the Seeker. I'm finding it a bit slow going, it's really not a well written show, but it has enough good moments to keep me going.

OH&S by [livejournal.com profile] mercurial_wit. A very cute Inception fic. Everything you've ever wanted to know about IV access and lots of things you didn't. Did set off my needle squick a little but not much more than the movie and it was worth it.

Something I really wish existed, but I am SO not up for creating/moderating is a comm for discussing romance novels from a social justice perspective.

Basically I want somewhere I can ask "Which Loretta Chase books that I haven't read aren't TOO horribly racist?" and "Are there any regency romances where the hero isn't of noble birth? Are regency romances doomed to a certain amount of classism?" and stuff like that. There's Smart Bitches Trashy Books (Which I was not subscribed to until now, for no good reason, but have made a feed for: [syndicated profile] smartbitches_feed) but that's a blog and I don't like commenting on blogs so I'm stuck being a passive consumer.

I poked about for existing comms and there's a bunch about romance novels, but for example note the first response to this post on the romancenovels lj-comm asking about historicals with interesting class issues. What's the bet the Pasha's secret is that he's white? :/ (EDIT: I checked the Amazon page, and sure enough he is)

EDIT: Oh hey, I meant to post this to [personal profile] sqbr, oops. Meh, it can stay here, it's not like it's a Deep Analytical Post or anything. But no imbroglio-ing in the comments!

EDIT 2: Posted to create_my_comm, thanks for the suggestion [personal profile] torachan!

Since I've actually made a post on it now: I have an opt-in filter for rambly posts about feeling sick. All my thinky posts about cfs or disability etc are unlocked or at most friends/circle locked, this is just for the "I FEEL CRAP AND IT SUCKS" stuff plus detailed boring lists, very rambly stuff about my brain, or TMI. There's absolutely no obligation to be on it if you don't want. If you see this post after say the 5th of May 2010 or don't have a dw account and want to sign up please comment to say so otherwise I won't notice.

And now to see how polls work with crossposting...
alias_sqbr: A stick figure doing cartwheels saying "Yay" (yay!)
Yay! AO3 finally has "category" (het/gen/etc) as ticky boxes rather than a dropdown menu. That's been bugging me since I had to set my very first uploaded story as "multi" when it's "f/f + m/f", since everyone's going to assume that means "m/m + m/f" and/or polyfic.

Of course my most recent "multi" stories have actually been m/m/f but that's not the point :)

My dropdown menu still says I don't have any f/f which kind of defeats the purpose, if it's still not showing up later I'll have to send a report. EDIT: wait, no, I just forgot to click "update" after previewing. Next thing I would like implented: editing the header of works without previewing the whole thing. EDIT 2: Wait OMG you can! Double yay!

Also: Icons!

Plus: Livejournal FINALLY has the option to disable comments but keep them visible. Oh, the number of times someone put their foot in their mouth and had to hide the resulting discussion in order to halt it. Of course people will still decide they don't like the comments they've been getting and hide/delete them, but now they have less of an excuse :)

So LJ has finally crossed the line for me by not only having pop up ads which infect people's computers with a virus but infecting one of my friends in particular.

I have thus decided I will at some point swap over to cross-posting the stuff that currently goes in [livejournal.com profile] alias_sqbr from [personal profile] alias_sqbr (yes, keeping lj comments enabled).

But before I can do that I need to know: is there any easy to switch between two dreamwidth accounts? Preferably one that works in Safari.

*Tests out the crossposting footnote thing, which I only just figured out*

This entry was originally posted at http://sqbr.dreamwidth.org/267895.html and has comment count unavailable comments.

Sometimes I get paranoid that people find it annoying when I post pictures of stuff I've drawn to my lj, especially when I'm going through an arty phase. Thus, a poll.

EDIT: Poll is refusing to work dammit. So, if you have strong feelings just let me know *mutters*

Not that I have any intention of stopping posting all together regardless of what people say (my lj and all) but it seems polite to find out the best way to tell people about stuff I've done without being annoying.

Does anyone else see posts marked "Jan 1 2010" and immediately assume they're future-dated sticky posts?

I wonder how many actual future-dated sticky posts are now out of date.

(here's an example of what I'm talking about if that first sentence made no sense to you)

Lj comment notification appears to be entirely borked for many (all?) people, but I noticed that for some reason "recent comments" doesn't seem to be, so you can at least see comments on your own lj:

I've been really enjoying being able to search my dreamwidth, so now that they've instituted searches for free accounts too I've imported my livejournal to [info - personal] alias_sqbr.

Don't friend it or comment on the posts or anything! I'm only going to log in and update it every now and then. I just thought I'd mention it to anyone else who likes the idea of being able to search their lj. Afaict free accounts don't have the "search my journal" option, but "sqbr *search term*" seems to work pretty well. This may be less useful for people with less unique names, but you can always give your dw account a different name than your lj.

And I have some dw invites for anyone who wants one.

EDIT: Ok so it just occurred to me to search for " *blah* rec". OMG. I am going to be here all day.

Every now and then I feel like posting something health related but decided not to because it's TMI/dull/depressing, and I don't want this journal to be a chore to read. So I've decided to make an opt-in filter, that way only the people who want to have to read it and I won't feel so self conscious.

EDCIT: Not checking the poll any more, so if you want in comment to say so.

Since I know I always feel weird commenting on this sort of request, a poll:
[Poll #1460325]

Anything important or interesting would be left unlocked, this is just for random crap I feel the need to get off my chest or record for personal reference. It will likely sometimes include stuff like my last post which is of low quality due to illness but not actually about being sick. People wouldn't be expected to read or comment and I'd try and keep everything under an informative cut.

I am totally cool with people not wanting to be on it. Really! You can make it up to me by being extra supportive on my unlocked health posts :)

One of the main reasons I got a livejournal was to be able to get comment notifications when I replied to people. And one of the main reasons I switched over completely was that I liked the comment threading and notifications, they created a much more vibrant discussion that I ever got at my blogger blog. I used to spend a lot of time in forums etc getting frustrated at having to constantly check all the threads I was in and being forced to engage with the WHOLE discussion on a post/topic rather than just the bit I was interested in, eg any time there was a troll everyone got derailed.

Having gotten used to lj style commenting I am loathe to get involved in any online discussions that don't have comment notifications and threading. Most places have comment notification now (Thank GOD) but most blogs and mailing lists don't have threading, or not to the full extent of lj. I was surprised in a discussion about comment policies at Hoyden About Town by some people who hate threading, but I guess I can see how that would be annoying if you always DO want to hear the whole conversation at once and don't like things splitting off.

I also am lazy and can't be bothered reading stuff I can't navigate entirely by my friendlists and email, though I'm not as bad as the people who refuse to read feeds or more than one flist (I have 4, though I never check my insanejournal) Thus I can't bring myself to engage with forums, even stuff like Starship Earth or the Jane Austen forums which aren't replicated elsewhere.

I remember when I had the feed to my blog people kept commenting on the feed (which I didn't get notifications for, and which vanished within a week or two) rather than clicking to get to the blog itself. This was very annoying.

Anyway, this post was inspired by wanting to comment on an article at the F word and discovering that their comment policy is "you send us an email, and if we like it we add it to a monthly comment digest". !!!

So how do you feel about commenting? I realise it's not a very exciting topic but I felt like talking about it :)

Lj is being a bit sneaky by hiding this link behind a cut and two extra clicks in the latest news post, but if you had a paid account during the latest outage you can get 3 days extra time.

If you missed it, my dreamwidth is sqbr and is different posts to this one. To read it either get an account (see below), get an OpenID or just friend the feed.

I have a request post to get access to locked posts, so if you want to read those you'll have to at least get an OpenID.

If you want a Dreamwidth account and don't have an invite, I have two left, send me a private message with your email address. Preference to people I know. All gone!
alias_sqbr: the symbol pi on a pretty background (Default)
I was going to wait a bit before posting this, but I'll just forget.

[Poll #1393536]

Also: if you want an invite but haven't got one, check out this community. Or you could buy a paid account, if you're really desperate.

To those crossposting: PLEASE USE CUTS. Also if you're crossposting everything please let us know which account you'd rather be friended at (ie which account you wouldn't mind being defriended at), though personally I'm going to wait a bit and let people figure out what they want to do first. Maybe make a "people who crosspost to dw" filter which I won't check so often.

Since people often ask I decided it would be fun to see what you guys think my username means. If you're torn, vote for all the ones you think are plausible. Answers in the comments, so vote before reading them!

Short version: posts about race/gender/disability etc will for the most part now be at Dreamwidth account, under a stricter comments policy.

Something I try to balance in my lj is letting people honestly work through/express their opinions, and stopping people from feeling attacked or hurt by the things other people (or I!) say. Unfortunately, you can't easily do both of those things at the same time, especially since I lack the spoons to moderate very tightly. When I first started posting about race and gender on this lj I was working through the basic concepts, and found it useful to explain myself to people who weren't into the whole anti-racism/feminism etc thing. But at this point I'm sick of re-explaining the same basic ideas over and over again, and I've literally been afraid to post about disability issues because I'm worried someone will say something clueless and hurtful.

The more I thought about it, the more I decided I needed an opt-in filter, that way everyone who commented had agreed to abide by some basic rules without having to try to make everyone else change their behaviour unwillingly. But on the other hand I like having open posts so random people can wander by and I can link back from outside.

And then I went "Wait, I have this Dreamwidth account sitting around I'm not using, and since hardly anyone's friended subscribed to me yet.."

So I've set up some commenting rules (still in beta. It'll probably be a while before I post anything). There's also an lj feed for people with ljs who don't have accounts there but want to read what I'm saying. I'm also pondering an opt-in list for locked posts but will wait until after DW goes into open Beta and it's easier for everyone who wants one to get an account.

I will probably post about social justice type stuff here too from time to time, but only when I can be bothered dealing with the comments properly.
alias_sqbr: the symbol pi on a pretty background (Default)
One of the interesting things about Dreamwidth is that they have divided the lj "Friends" idea into two separate things: subscribing to someone's journal, and letting them read your locked posts. (Neither of which is called "friending") See my userinfo.

I'm curious to see how this plays out. Myself I'm friending subscribing to pretty anyone who subscribes to me on the assumption that reading filters will come in before it gets unwieldy, but am only giving access to people I'd be comfortable reading my most private locked posts. When/if I actually *do* a locked post I'll reconsider it.

But I would say that a lot of people are giving access to everyone they subscribe to, and possibly then using access filters. See for example denise: she is one of the founders, and uses this account for Official Announcements. She is also currently subscribing to everyone who joins dw. So she's a logical person to subscribe to (and I have) but unless all 668 people who've given her access are her close personal friends...(a roughly equal number have subscribed but not given access)

There's been some interesting discussions about it on [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, I'm curious to see how it all plays out:

Thanks to the totally awesome [livejournal.com profile] elaran I have a Dreamwidth account: sqbr

Not doing anything with it now apart from reading stuff and experimenting with cross posting/backups but if you have one too come friend me! Those who don't can create openID accounts (before it comes out of Beta on the 30th) but there's no point commenting on my posts since they're just duplicates.

I love getting into closed betas, I feel so elite and geek-cred-having :D *is smug at all you peons*

So, Dreamwidth is starting up soon(*).

I find it and the OTW (specifically an Archive Of Our Own) interesting (I think I have an invite for that if anyone's interested, btw). Both were formed by groups of mostly female fans(**) who got sick of being messed round by badly written and run online facilities for fandom and decided to create their own, egalitarian, professional, fan-run alternatives. Time will only tell if they work, but they seem to be doing ok so far. (EDIT: Dreamwidth is not just fannish)

They make an interesting contrast to more "male" geek open source projects etc. From my limited experience I'd say there's a lot of differences and a lot of similarities too, certainly the camaraderie and idealistic imagery. I guess fanfic writers and open source programmers both tend to emphasise a free and unfettered sharing of ideas (especially those who are both, like Naomi Novik :)).

Now I'm wondering if there's much/any fanfic written about Linux...

(*) There's a lot of broken links still, if you're interested in seeing what an actual account looks like here's one off metafandom.
(**)I'm not sure how much crossover there is between Dreamwidth and OTW. I'm sure there's some, they certainly seem to come from the same broad social group of lj based fanfic writers, but they're not formally affiliated afaict.
