I was going to wait a bit before posting this, but I'll just forget.

[Poll #1393536]

Also: if you want an invite but haven't got one, check out this community. Or you could buy a paid account, if you're really desperate.

To those crossposting: PLEASE USE CUTS. Also if you're crossposting everything please let us know which account you'd rather be friended at (ie which account you wouldn't mind being defriended at), though personally I'm going to wait a bit and let people figure out what they want to do first. Maybe make a "people who crosspost to dw" filter which I won't check so often.

I have no desire to get a Dreamwidth account and I'm getting a bit grumpy that I'm getting the feeling that I'm going to be pressured into crossing over if I want to keep in touch with friends.

I have an account, am not particularly committed to putting anything there, might migrate if it looks like that's the way the wind's blowing but not before, am concerned that the links I've spent years building on LJ will be jeopardised by a mass migration, suspect that for me personally DW will neither offer anything new or usefully protect my freedoms.

One idea is to build a personal website that frontends an automated backup of my LJ and mirrors the entries, with openID support. I like the LJ technology but I'm almost completely over entrusting my data to third parties that continually splinter and get sold off, and so forth.

I think [livejournal.com profile] davyd did the frontend thing.

Yeah, a few people have I think. It's not hard to pull the RSS from LJ and redisplay it, the auth stuff is slightly more complex but still not.

The thing about LJ is it still, years later, has the most functional "friends list" features of the blogging platforms. It surprises me that other blog networks haven't gone down that road.

One of my concerns is that despite recent outcries about censorship and content control on LJ, we've actually had it pretty good here.

I'm not too sure things will be better on a site with no track record that's in part managed by reps of the fanfic community, which regardless of its much-debated merits can be rather volatile and dominated by personal feuds.

I think it's the right approach to be a little wary on the side of expectations about user protections and professionalism at DW. After seven or eight years at LJ where I'd mark their service levels as "good to very good" if I were to change to DW I'd want it to be with the expectation that I'd be able to stay there in complete happiness for at least a decade.

I selected "other", and my response would be "I don't have an account, and this whole Dreamwidth thing seemingly sprung up out of nowhere, and I don't fully understand the situation nor the mass-migration, so I have no idea whether I want one or not."

It depends...

I'm definitely not going to be crossposting things to THIS LJ, but I'm planning on putting all my fannish babble over there, so I may crosspost to aris_writing. That's the journal that I mirrored over there, anyway.
