So [personal profile] fred_mouse asked me to write about my headcanons for romances I've played and I was so UTTERLY BAFFLED by the idea that anyone actually enjoys me talking about this kind of thing I stalled for like a month.

So I'm just going to go through relationships my PCs have had and see if I have anything to say about each.

Feeling tired and grumpy with the after effects of what I think was very mild food poisoning. And it turns out I haven't done one of these since April!

My new fannish infatuation is Welcome to Night Vale, and I actually got like 100 tumblr notes on my comic, which is about 95 more than I usually get (and about 95 more than I got on DeviantArt, it's not a big fandom over there I guess) The Dragon Age reverse bang comes out in a week, I'm quite proud of my art and the story I've seen is lots of fun, but you'll have to wait for that :)

Two original pics I'm especially happy with:

My first ever fanfic kink meme fill! I quite enjoyed posting this as I went in little 5000 character bites I couldn't go back and edit, as well as only aiming to hit all the requested prompts rather than stressing about actually finishing the story. And yet I did finish and I think it came out rather well.

Sunshine and the Nightingale at AO3, Sunshine and the Nightingale at Fanfic.net
Fandom: Dragon Age
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences, no content notes
Relationships: Bethany Hawke/Leliana
Summary: For a prompt on the kink meme:
After being refused by the Warden, Leliana is still in Lothering and the darkspawn hoard is fast approaching. She ends up escaping with the Hawkes (and Aveline) and goes with them to Kirkwall. She and Bethany fall for each other.

And now some fanart of three Homestuck trolls as the Endless from Sandman, and Rose and Kanaya as superheroes, because I am just that much of a nerd. For all of them I was trying to replicate a comic-book look.

I've been doing a lot of stuff for exchanges and challenges recently, most of which I can't post yet, though one had a bug that sent out notifications to everyone subscribed to me regardless, ack. But this I can post:

The Importance of Giving in to Temptation (AO3) (8312 words)
The Importance of Giving in to Temptation (Fanfic.net)
Author: [personal profile] alias_sqbr
Rating: Teen And Up
Contains: Offscreen death, not the main characters of the fic
Relationships: Fenris/Female Hawke/Isabela
Summary: "Sin" is a matter of perspective. Seven moments in the relationship of Fenris, May Hawke, and Isabela. A fluffier companion to Blood Magic.
Note: Chapter four of this was posted for the "Sloth" prompt of the [personal profile] swooping_is_bad "Seven Deadly Sins" challenge.

I felt bad that Isabela didn't show up much in Blood Magic, and wanted to have a go at writing ot3 fic that wasn't established couple + 1.

And now, some art! There's a minor trans character in Dragon Age: Mark of the Assassin, Serenity, who got some skeevy dialogue (which Bioware apologised for) Fandom responded by celebrating her with lots of unskeevy art and fic huzzah (and then other parts of fandom complained, but never mind)

I enjoyed this. It's very fluffy and light and insubstantial, but I liked that. You go to a party at an Orlesian mountain villa at the behest of an elf assassin created, voiced, and based on Felicity Day. Shenanigans ensue. I would have enjoyed it more if it had more depth/thought, but I don't regret the purchase.

The (non-compulsory) stealth section was just easy enough that I could do it after several tries, I think next time I'll just murder everyone (I'm planning on bringing my Azula inspired mage, so it's in character :D) I haven't done enough stealth games to be able to compare, it wasn't super fun but it was nice having some variety.

I took my Isabela rivalmancing rogue, with Isabela and Merril. The lack of a warrior didn't seem to cause too much trouble (on easy, at any rate), and they had fun at the party as I thought they would. I didn't realise I could have brought Bethany, though, I think she'd have enjoyed a break from the Circle /overinvestment in fictional characters

Some of the puzzles were a bit tricky, but mostly non-compulsory. I've looked up some hints and will see what happens if I solve them all next time. They seem to tailor the sidequests slightly to your party, I'm tempted to replay the same game again to finish Isabela's sidequest, it niggles at me.

All the wandering around pretty countryside, doing puzzles, and french accents reminded me of Gabriel Knight 3. I kept waiting for Andraste's secret heir to turn up, or maybe some vampires.

Ok, now for some spoilery thoughts.

I've finally gotten a break from my recent inability to finish anything plotty or prose related, huzzah.

I am most proud of Mass Effect 3, an honest to goodness playable computer game. Very silly, but I think it turned out pretty well for what it is.

I've been having heaps of fun with the Isabela rivalry romance in Dragon Age 2. I'm also looking forward to being a cheerful pro-mage revolutionary :D

I am remarkably bored and have noone to randomly babble at.

I'm currently watching the anime "Black Lagoon". It's superficially a simple darkish drama about a bunch of mercenaries in the Pacific doing various jobs, but I've heard it gains a bit of depth and it's certainly enjoyable enough thus far.

I made avocado, tomato, turkey and coriander on toasted white bun for dinner and it was lovely but I think it's disagreeing with me :/

I'm replaying Dragon Age 2 again, this time with a character loosely inspired by Terezi (or possibly her ancestor Redglare) from Homestuck: she usually takes the sarcastic dialogue options and has a certain disrespect for authority(*) but has a deepseated belief in Justice. Which means she really likes Anders (who is possessed by a spirit of Justice) I've tried to make her be socialist just to see if I can but the dialogue options tend to assume Hawke doesn't care much about poverty. She's in a rivalmance with Isabela the amoral pirate which is lots of fun :D I think if I play again I'll use the console to see the rivalry relationships I haven't seen yet, they're interesting to compare.

The latest episode of Doctor Who is a bit distressing to watch when you feel old and sick and your husband has ABANDONED you to go on a long trip (Cam watched it before he went to bed and messaged me, apparently it made him sad too, d'aww)

[personal profile] lilysea came over (and not just to use my washing machine until hers is fixed :)) which was nice.

(*)It would have been more Redglare-ish to make her a Templar, but my last character had a deep faith in both justice and the Chantry (leading to a love/hate relationship with Anders) and I wanted to do something different.
alias_sqbr: Dagna from Dragon Age reaching for a book (dagna)
Non spoilery comments: I liked it, though I didn't LOVE it like some people. Still, definitely worth playing. I recommend Varric, Anders, and if you can swing it one of your siblings, though there's cute banter for everyone. There's a lot of stuff about magic and demons etc (yeah, I know, when isn't there), so a character who cares about that stuff adds extra depth. I used a Templar type who was rivalmancing Anders and it was pretty great. I think if I play it again I'll bring my blood mage for contrast :D

As far as I can tell playing from a save after the end of the game can mess things up, the dialogue certainly doesn't seem to take it into account.

How did I not realise that AO3 had a "share" button? Is that new or am I just really unobservant?

After a year I finally got around to drawing the Cousland arc of my comic series Various Attempts at romance in Dragon Age Origins, which led me to some slightly less silly Cousland/Leliana art:

I made a post about Political fanart at [personal profile] sqbr which some of you may be interested in.

I've also updated my Redbubble store with my more recent original art.

I was linked this disturbing picture of me and the rest of the 1999 Unisfa committee at Terracon (description below). I'm the one on the back left with the APPALLING jumper, even back in the 90s people mocked me for it. It was cold, ok :P

I've been playing Portal 2, it's awesome, though I must admit I have resorted to a walkthrough now and then (I shall blame it on brainfog and ignore the fact I have always been too impatient to finish puzzle games without a walkthrough). It took a little while to stop feeling like a gratuitous sequel with nothing new to offer, but a couple of chapters in and it got really interesting, both in terms of puzzles and plot/setting etc.

Yesterday (after getting stuck on Portal 2) I decided to finally finish my third Dragon Age: Origins character, who has been most of the way through the game for months after I couldn't face a particular long unpleasant dungeon crawl again.

No spoilers and I've chosen some shots which illustrate the way your family changes to match the PC (though I'm too impatient to get very good images)

After watching [livejournal.com profile] rawles create a Mass Effect character loosely based on a photo I might try that next time I play one of these games, my characters always end up a mish mash of whatever features I think don't look too uncanny valley-ish.

So! My three Hawkes.

I've been getting over a cold since Swancon, and one way I filled in the time was watching the anime "Puella Magi Madoka Magica". I really liked it, on the surface it seems like a typical magical girl anime but as it goes on it goes to some very interesting and sometimes dark places, a bit like Princess Tutu or Homestuck though it's not as surreal.

I've seen criticisms based on the fact that it's "moe": aimed at men who like stories about innocent young girls being adorable(*), but regardless of the creator's intent it didn't ping as exploitative or creepy to me, apart from maybe the short skirts. Pretty much all the characters are female and they have some very compelling relationships and emotional arcs. Plus the main character has a mother! Who's alive! And awesome! (She doesn't show up much, but it's still notable)

I went in completely spoiled for all the major plot points (such is the nature of Tumblr), and I still really enjoyed it, but it would be MUCH more enjoyable if you went in spoiler free. I will warn for an encounter with a suicidal person in the first episode or so. This fan made trailer is mostly based on the first episode if you want to have some idea of what you're getting into.

And once I ran out of episodes and finally got my [community profile] junetide submission out of the way, I drew some fanart :) They're a little spoilery by implication, I guess.

Inevitably, Homestuck and Dragon Age 2 crossovers )

(*)A very dodgy explanation of the term. Still, while Japanese media has it's own issues with gender, "lack of female main characters" and "belief that men can't relate to female characters" definitely aren't among them.
alias_sqbr: Dagna from Dragon Age reaching for a book (dagna)
No content warnings.

Contains three fic and some rambles about why I wrote them.

I adore Isabela, but I always assumed I wouldn't be able to write her POV (or any story featuring her in a major way) since a lot of her character is about having lots of unselfconscious meaningless sex, and that's just not something I can write very convincingly or comfortably. And then thanks to various conversations (specifically with [livejournal.com profile] jakia) I became taken with the idea of an Isabela/Fenris story which subverted the implications of canon and had them at most holding hands. Thus:

Title: That Night
Author: [personal profile] alias_sqbr
Wordcount: 1847
Rating: Teen
Pairing(s): Isabela/Fenris, some background/past m!Hawke/Fenris and m!Hawke/Anders
Summary: Fenris and Isabela spend an evening together. There is a long walk in the moonlight, hand holding, and talking about feelings (well, not so much of that last part, don't want to rush into things here)
Links: AO3 and Fanfic.net

And then I discovered that writing Isabela is heaps of fun )
alias_sqbr: "Creative genius" with an arrow pointing to a sketch of me (genius!)
Title: Five times Anders tried to get people to read his manifesto (including one time he succeeded)
Author: [personal profile] alias_sqbr
Rating: G, no warnings but it references the events of endgame
Relationships: Anders/F!Hawke
Characters: Anders, Varric, f!Hawke, Merrill, Fenris, Elthina
Words: 2493
Summary: Nobody likes reading lists. Maybe you should try writing it in iambic pentameter instead, that's concise, but it has a nice rhythm to it.
Links: AO3, Fanfic.net.

My first 5 times fic! Not sure I quite got the conventions right.

Also, I drew some Fenris/f!Hawke/Isabela art to finish off my amoral!mage!f!Hawke series, but I'm less happy with that (also at DeviantArt and Tumblr)

A bunch of people have been doing a meme about what fics of theirs have the most hits at AO3, which as it happens was something I was thinking about.
Lists and numbers make everything more fun )

I finished my third playthrough of Dragon Age yesterday, as a law abiding warrior who (mostly) supported the Circle/Templars and rivalry romanced Anders, and I have THOUGHTS and FEELINGS.

I really am surprised how well the game holds up to replaying. I think it helps that it's short, and that I really enjoy the combat. Replaying DA:O just dragged in so many places. (Which is not to say that DA2 is better than DA:O, and one of the reasons I was surprised is because so much of the plot stays the same)
Spoilers! )

Since I know LJ's recent flakiness has increased the interest: I have a bunch of Dreamwidth invites if anyone wants one. PM me your email address. Archiving your old entries and crossposting to lj is relatively painless if like me you don't want to switch entirely, though you should wait until LJ's current wave of flakiness stops before importing.

I'm playing Dragon Age 2 for the third time and enjoying it more than I thought I would. The plot really is pretty railroady with most "important" decisions (especially early on) having only an illusion of choice, but with a sufficiently different personality the experience still feels fairly fresh. Rowan is a sensible devoutly moral pro-Templar female warrior, as a contrast to Stefan the good natured wishy-washily pro-mage-freedom male rogue and May the aggressive snarky amoral female mage.

The "Taunt enemies to come closer, make them explode with Holy Smite" warrior technique is nearly as much fun as making fireballs rain down from the sky as a mage :D
