Dragon Age: Legacy
Jul. 31st, 2011 06:01 pmNon spoilery comments: I liked it, though I didn't LOVE it like some people. Still, definitely worth playing. I recommend Varric, Anders, and if you can swing it one of your siblings, though there's cute banter for everyone. There's a lot of stuff about magic and demons etc (yeah, I know, when isn't there), so a character who cares about that stuff adds extra depth. I used a Templar type who was rivalmancing Anders and it was pretty great. I think if I play it again I'll bring my blood mage for contrast :D
As far as I can tell playing from a save after the end of the game can mess things up, the dialogue certainly doesn't seem to take it into account.
SPOILERS!!!
I started out with my first Hawke Stefan, a cheerfully well adjusted rogue in a friendmance with Fenris who was vaguely pro mage but didn't have super strong feelings. Since he was no longer on speaking terms with Anders and Bethany was in the Circle I had no Grey Wardens with me at all. It was nice for a while, and I really liked seeing Fenris and Bethany getting along (in my head the three of them run off together after the end of the game) but after a while I decided a different set of characters would be more involving.
So I restarted with Rowan, who has an intense distrust of magic and very mixed feelings about her father and it all felt much more involving. I brought Warden!Bethany (so nice to get a chance to hang out with her!), Anders and Sebastian (Varric would have made more sense, but wasn't who I felt like bringing). I felt like a bit of a jerk when Anders was all adorably flirtatious, since this was the last save before I killed him. But then there was the bit when he is taken over by Justice and summons shades (wtf Justice, shades?) and you have to fight him and afterwards he thanks you and ah… It was so sad and perfect, knowing that this was pretty much the last nice moment the two of them would have together before Justice took over completely and it was all doom and death. The Anders rivalmance hits so many buttons for me. I hear they've made it so you can take him with you to the templars, but I'm not sure I have the stomach for it.
I'm not sure how I feel about meeting one of the original magisters who started the Blight. I mean, it was kind of cool, but also very much in line with Chantry teachings, and while there was some subtlety to Corypheus he wasn't as interestingly ambiguous as say the Architect. Rowan is a good Chantry girl so she did really enjoy killing him :D I found it a bit odd that Malcolm Hawke, apostate, had a magical sword/bow. Plus it felt weird doing all that blood magic with a rigidly anti-blood-magic character.
I quite enjoyed the combat. The last fight was pretty cool with the increasing barrage of elements. I only just barely defeated Corypheus, hacking away and working through my potions after the rest of the party had died (but were still offering advice, lol)
