Look at this great little Elementary fic trascendenza write for me about Watson and Bell!

Speaking of Elementary I really liked this Sleepy Hollow crossover The Hellhound of the Rockefellers.

I went out today! To a PARTY! OMG! It was a brief hello to [personal profile] transcendancing(*) and quite lovely, like the woman herself :)

There were other things I was going to say but I have entirely forgotten them!

Moving has horribly sapped my creativity, but while the mess is still not resolved I feel like I have some breathing space now. So! Stuff what I have made! Thank you to everyone who left me prompts, they were great.

A Portrait of Tree

An actual commission! For money! It was an interesting experience, but I am putting off trying it again until my life is more settled.

I am bored and the internet is being weird and Cam is asleep so I can't pack. Thus, a post!

First: Flight Rising Registration is opening briefly soon! Afaict it will be 8pm 23rd Oct to 2am 24th Oct Perth time (the rest of you have to work it out yourselves from the site clock ;))

Books:

The Poster Children by Kitty Burroughs: I was sold this as a diverse superhero YA, and hoped the first two would negate my dislike of the third but nope. Two self righteously disagreeable POV characters in and I couldn't take any more and gave up.

Agents of Change by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller: Was halfway through this on the plane before I remembered I'd read it before while very ill. haven't gotten back to it since getting off the plane, I really should. Anyway, it's fun! Though I vaguely recall not liking the ending.

Fanfic:

The Vienna Game by Paratactitian: Homestuck, Terezi<>Sollux. An enjoyable cyberpunk AU caper, the characterisations didn't always work for me (more because the AU hadn't changed them enough than because they differed too much from canon) and it was well-meaning-male-gaze-y (eg we just HAPPENED to never see any of the gay/bi male characters express interest in other men) but still, fun.

I don't normally list fic but it got me through the plane trip to Melbourne after Poster Children dissapointed me.

TV: (New)

Watamote: What an interesting show! It's an anime about a socially awkward girl who freezes up whenever she tries to talk to anyone, but instead of the typical adorable woobie she's a genuinely weird loser, with sunken eyes and weird taste in porn and sour grapes thoughts about other more popular girls. She's likeable despite this, at least for me, and the show pokes affectionate fun at her. I saw someone describe it as best enjoyed by those who can go "Oh god I used to be like that", and while I had more anxiety and like to think I wasn't quite so mean spirited there are certainly...paralells. She isn't showing any signs of being Saved By A Boy's Love either, just slowly making efforts to reach out to people off her own bat (often in wrong headed ways, but she takes even the slightest win as proof of her INCREDIBLE AWESOME so it's not too depressing) I'm only two episodes in, will see how it goes!

Brooklyn 99: a surprisingly enjoyable police comedy: light and funny with likeable characters and enough mild continuity not to irritate me. Pretty diverse too, and the "genius manchild"-esque white guy not only gets called out on his crap but improves. A bit fat shamey, alas.

(Continuing)
Natsume's Book of Friends: I am enjoying this an episode at a time, it's very gentle and sweet without much overarching plot.

Elementary and Sleepy Hollow continue well, Marvel: Agents of Shield continues adequately. (And Joss Whedon continues to have Issues with Black People) Am not up to date with Korra yet *resists urge to poke Cam awake* but am not a massive fan of this season so far, though it has it's moments.

Coursera: Finished my "Online Games: Literature, New Media, and Narrative" course which certainly gave me a better grounding in the Classics modern fantasy draws on and got me thinking about remediation (where a work is translated from one media to another) but would have been SO much better if the lecturer had been willing to be more critical. Oh well.

Music: been listening to a bunch of Rihanna. She's great.

And finally: look how pretty my nails are!

First: my gift, a really lovely study of all the characters and their bonds to each other (especially the girls, just like I asked for ^_^):

some songs that aren't about love (1292 words) by jan
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: Chihayafuru
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Ayase Chihaya, Oe Kanade, Hanano Sumire, Wataya Arata
Summary: Not that sort of love, at least.

And now, the gift I created for hydrangea, also Chihayafuru:

I also made some treats! And my Monster High doll was indeed quite useful for drawing anime-ish bodies from different angles :)

No, this isn't a Night Vale reference: I spent lots of energy this morning putting a stew on the boil and then several hours later noticed the power cord had somehow gotten dislodged so I'm going to have to throw it all out :( :(

While I was out I bought a robot doll for TOTALLY GROWN UP ARTIST REASONS.

The Reverse Big Bang has started posting at [livejournal.com profile] dragonagebb! I drew a femslashy Isabel and Leliana picture and got two very fun femslash caper stories in return, which is exactly what I was hoping would happen.

And now an AO3 meme I stole from [personal profile] owlmoose (not the hitcount one)

Feeling tired and grumpy with the after effects of what I think was very mild food poisoning. And it turns out I haven't done one of these since April!

My new fannish infatuation is Welcome to Night Vale, and I actually got like 100 tumblr notes on my comic, which is about 95 more than I usually get (and about 95 more than I got on DeviantArt, it's not a big fandom over there I guess) The Dragon Age reverse bang comes out in a week, I'm quite proud of my art and the story I've seen is lots of fun, but you'll have to wait for that :)

Two original pics I'm especially happy with:

Action shots!

I haven't included all my art, just the stuff I think is moderately good/interesting.

I can finally reveal my Kaleidoscope story!

Link/Title: Welcome to Collins and Collins!
Fandom: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries
Info: 2792 words, G, f/f, No content notes
Relationships: Lizzie Bennet/Charlotte Lu
Characters: Lizzie Bennet, Charlotte Lu, Maria Lu
Summary: Lizzie comes to visit Collins and Collins (and Lu). An alternate version of their reunion, written before canon got that far. Created as a gift for Phi for the Kaleidoscope gift exchange.

It's also available at fanfic.net but I strongly recommend the AO3 version above, it's not the same without the art.

I also did a bunch of monster girls, and some prompts.

Elementary! It's a modern version of Sherlock Holmes set in New York and three of the first four episodes have been great (the third was irritatingly generic serial killer plot, ug. Hopefully there won't be more of those)

Crust! We ordered from them last night, I got Peking duck with Hoisin sauce and vegetables (and no cheese or chili) and it was GREAT. Probably the best cheese free pizza I have ever had. The gluten free and vegetarian options are apparently great too. Unfortunately they couldn't tell me the ingredients of their meat marinades, so peking duck is probably the only one I'll be brave enough to try, but I can live with that.

Kaleidoscope! There was an issue with AO3 and it went unanon but just in case that gets fixed, I shall keep my super secret writers super secret identities a secret :)

Anyway: I got two fics and they're both great! The writers gave me exactly what I asked for.

Seven Wishes for Charlotte Lu: Lizzie Bennet Diaries

A little ficlet set during Elizabeth's visit to Pemberley. Part of a longer AU which is refusing to let me write it, but this scene fits into canon and stands alone, so I thought I'd post it to make myself feel better.

EDIT: First chapter of Mistress of Pemberley now up at AO3.

In the Portrait Gallery: Pride and Prejudice, 350 words, G. Elizabeth Bennet, some Elizabeth/Darcy subtext.

LinkPractical Applications of the Turing Test at AO3, at Fanfic.net
Fandom: Portal 2
Info: 15647 words, T, no content notes
Characters/Pairings: GLaDOS/Chell
Summary: A perfectly innocent and entirely human woman turns up at the house Chell has been living in since she escaped Aperture.

I wasn't going to post this until I had some other stuff to go with it, but I'm bored.

My brain has so much trouble once a story gets above about 7K words, I have extreme difficulty keeping all the themes and emotional arcs etc straight. Even with shorter stories I have to write them as little scenelets and then fairly short chapters otherwise I can't keep it all straight. But this demanded to be long! Which isn't that surprising I suppose, since I've been pondering how to get Chell and GlaDOS together since finishing Portal 2. So many shippy feelings, so many reasons they would never work. Various ideas and stuff have leaked out into other robot stories over the past year, which is good, or it would have been like 30K and unfinished. Also it made me realise how much I freaking love writing stories about robots and AIs :D

If you're into Portal fic it all seems to be on tumblr these days (this certainly got a much larger response there than any of the other fic I've posted) meaning I've finally gotten into this whole subscribing to tags thing the kids are talking about these days.

Thanks to everyone who gave me prompts, they were a nice mix of things to draw.

I did a video post about being a queer, disabled, feminist writer

Errors vs. Bugs and the End of Stupidity has a really nice metaphor about errors vs bugs when it comes to mistaking mistakes. (Not a fan of the schizophrenia metaphor but never mind)

Woo, sunbreaksdown is writing Lin/Korra! She's one of my favourite femslash writers. And yes, this pairing should hit all my squicks I DON'T UNDERSTAND EITHER.

Also I have a random theory that Lin's father...is Zuko! He had a brief drunken tryst with Toph when he and Mai were having a fight or something, they both agreed it was a terrible idea but she kept the kid, and then had to keep it a secret to stop Lin being drawn into Fire Nation royal succession shenanigans.

Extra theory just for Lizbee: And then Azula moved to the Fire Nation to help raise Lin.

(n.b This theory spoils nothing and has no real basis in canon. I can't see the show having drunken trysts, for a start, so Mai would have to, like, die in childbirth to give Zuko time to get over her, secretly marry Toph and then die himself or something. I also like the idea that Toph went "Right! I want a baby. Aang, you're super powerful, let's have a super earthbending baby!" But then Katara nixed the idea so she moved on)

Under the cut: top works at AO3 in 2011 and 2012, as well as top fanfic in 2012 at AO3 and fanfic.net. I wasn't going to do the meme because I find it depressing how it's dominated by old stuff, but comparing is interesting.

I decided to just write without stressing about quality or whatever too much, and it's like a dam broke in my head. It seems to have stopped for the moment, but I went through my WiP folder and have a couple more fics I want to fix up. Then we'll see what happens.

Also: boy do I enjoy writing about artificial intelligence! I think I might try to come up with another original story, playing with Mass Effect fic has been fun but fanfic has it's limits. Plus I'm getting increasingly frustrated with the way that every other person writing about EDI seems to see her as a compliant sexbot to heal the pain of some woobie (usually Joker) which...just...no. Of course, fandom may not read my stories for the scifi, but at least the stories get read.

Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Avatar the Last Airbender/Legend of Korra )
alias_sqbr: "Creative genius" with an arrow pointing to a sketch of me (genius!)
Like a lot of people I had some issues with the end of Mass Effect 3, but not the sort that can be fixed with fic: it wasn't that I really disliked the ending I got, it's that I want more endings.

So here is a very short and rather slapdash visual novel that has some more varied endings depending on what choices you make: Mass Effect 3: Endings Edition

And now some fic (one illustrated) for Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I'm trying to write more by typing things up without overthinking and posting them as I go. Whether it's helped my quality is another question but I've decided not to worry about that as long as I feel like the basic gist of what I wanted to say has come across.

This is inspired by the post Representing Video Game Mechanics in Fanction. It made some very good points (and has a nice glossary), but focussed very much on Japanese RPGs (JRPGs), and I thought it might be interesting to think about how I've approached the problem myself for Western RPGs (WRPGs), specifically the Bioware games Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
