Just got the following incredibly dodgy message on Fanfiction.net

For years, I pretended to myself that I would never take this final step. I mocked others while knowing in my heart of hearts I would one day join them. But today, at last...

I played a tabletop roleplaying game.

And it was fun.
Cut for roleplaying anecdotes )

The song Honey White came out in 1995. And for the past 21 years, whenever it's come on the radio, I've been vaguely aware of it as a song about a woman who really liked Asian food.

Today, all of a sudden, I went: Wait. This is a song about a woman who sold her soul for Asian food?? That's a bit...

And then I realised. It's angel food. It's about a woman who sold her soul for angel food and the devil wants his due. It was never about Asian food at all.

I feel like I've fallen into the Berenstain universe all over again.

Me: Bioware made Mass Effect, and I've heard it's very good sf, maybe I'll enjoy it as much as Dragon Age!
Cam: Hmm. It's very first person shooter-y, I know you don't like those.
Me: Darn. Well, I'll give it a go, I can at least enjoy the beginning of the story.

And I quite enjoyed going through the character creation and the opening cutscene and telling my coworker to get over himself.

Time between the game giving me access to my gun, and me nearly shooting a subordinate? 30 seconds.
Most of which was spent lost in the tutorial screen looking for the "save" button.

Maybe I'll watch Farscape and play the new Dragon Age expansion instead :)

Was linked Silly Novels by Lady Novelists by George Elliot and was put very much in the mind of snarkily amusing but overgeneralising (EDIT: and problematic) posts about Mary Sues and the portrayal of women off metafandom. Probably got her lots of narky comments letters, too :)

Lots of dodgy gender and class issues (she is such a grammar snob. Sadly we cannot see what I get the impression was some amusing satirical typesetting) but she puts in some digs against sexism and classism too. She even take a dig at American vegetarians. I looked it up and at that point she was not only not out as a woman, but hadn't actually published anything yet, which puts her choice to rant about women writers in a different context.

Having read a bunch of modern romances set in the 18th/19th century it's always interesting to read snark about romances from those eras written by a contemporary (see also "Northanger Abbey").
