HELLO FROM PAX
Oct. 31st, 2014 10:00 pmTrip: Went as well as could be expected and still HORRIBLY EXHASUSTING
Hotel (Oak on Collins): Pretty nice except for the FIVE STEPS that mean I have to use a slow, out of the way wheelchair lift that is accessed through the bar and behind a curtain and refuses to work at all if the gate at the top isn't closed properly, which is super convenient when you're at the bottom.
Went to visit a friend and her ADORABLE BABY yesterday, made self even more tired and sore and it was worth every minute. Babbbiieesss :D :D (And he is a particualrly cute one)
Today: Realised as I neared the concention centre that I had forgotten my recharger, barely made it back and spent the rest of the day lurching from power point to power point. Note to self: find somewhere better than Rehab Rentals next time.
Cam told me about a Dragon Age playtesting thing and I thought "nah", then as I toodled around the exhibition floor I found myself thinking more and more "YES".
( No spoilers just some panel notes and the rest of my day )

Last day of holiday!
Oct. 7th, 2013 08:41 pmMet with a friend then got around to trying Dessert Story on a rec from sister's vegan partner (HOORAY FOR VEGANS) and it has SO MANY THINGS I CAN EAT. Had a watermelon sago which was strange but nice, then napped, then had a lovely evening with
lizbee at Chocolate Buddha: gluten free AND wheelchair friendly Japanese! Which was very nice! Got to watch the adorable local sparrows flitting around Federation Square, too.
Just before we parted I had a weird moment where I was sure I'd seen a massive billboard flash the single word BOOBS, I stared at it doggedly until it cycled to that ad again and I could prove to lizbee that I wasn't imagining things.
And then I went to a different Taiwanese dessert place (9 taiwanese dessert? On Swanston street, also accessible) and had hot grass jelly with lotus seeds and red beans and tapioca and then google searched "Taiwanese dessert perth" because OMG. TASTY HOT DESSERTS I CAN EAT. (Which are vegan afaict! Probably gluten free too? Or at least low gluten?)
And now to feed my dragons before the sugar wears off.

Using a mobility scooter at Worldcon 2010
Sep. 12th, 2010 06:16 pmHere is a summary of my experiences using a mobility scooter for the first time at Worldcon. The beginning is mostly taken from the posts I made at the time but then I go into some further thoughts. I was inspired to try one by a post like this from someone else on I think
disabled_fandom so I thought I'd return the favour.
Overall: it was fantastic and I'm incredibly glad I did it. I feel less crap now than I usually do after the much shorter and smaller Swancon.
The woman from the Melbourne mobility centre was incredibly helpful and nice. It was only $14 a day plus $2 for delivery to the hotel which was totally worth it. But that's with a con discount, I think it's normally double that.
I'd also like to extend a HUGE thankyou to
karenbabcock, the disability support officer for Worldcon, who did a fantastic job organising everything and checked up on me during the con to make sure things were working out.

Worldcon Day 5: Monday

Worldcon Day 4, Sunday
Sep. 7th, 2010 05:20 amSo Sunday was awesome. I had another sudden spoon failure, but not until nearly 4pm, and panels only run until 6 and I'd seen everything I really wanted.

And so it begins!
Sep. 2nd, 2010 12:59 pmWell! We have registered and picked up our bags etc (on the ground floor, for anyone else who gets confused by the Calculated Risk Rationalisation or whatever conference happening at the door connecting to the Hilton) and are waiting for the Worldcon opening ceremony which is at two. Picking up our badges saved exactly zero time since we got confused and waited in the "people who have pregistered but not picked up their badges" line anyway (which was a whole one person long for our end of the alphabet) Said hello to some people, and even though I'm resting in my room same as I have been for most afternoons lately it's cool to know that the con is there, waiting.
The scooter has been very useful in some contexts, especially any long dull travel in a straight line or when I'm backtracking a lot because I'm lost or standing about a lot (it was thus great for registering). Not suited to an umbrella and no gloves in the rain though, brr. Also, well, I'm not very good at it. I am quite embarrassingly bad at using reverse to do three point turns etc.
Yesterday I managed to TOTALLY screw up organising to meet people and yet it ended up going about as well as it possibly could. I got to meet
nixwilliams which was great. We chatted for a bit and then he tagged along in the rain while I picked up my badge (much drama, since the power was out, for no real benefit) and pick up some carrots from the Spencer St IGA (they had five, two of which were off :/) And I didn't run over his feet with the scooter once!
( In which I try to untangle where I went wrong )

Adventures in Shopping
Aug. 30th, 2010 02:54 pmHaving explored east of the Hyatt on our arrival, I got around to checking the western direction this afternoon, and stumbled upon a convenience store and outlet mall REALLY close by, the latter of which has a food court (which apparently closes at 6).
Got my mobility scooter this morning. The woman from the Melbourne mobility centre was incredibly helpful and nice.
( In which I am reminded why I don't drive )

Yes, it's a boring Worldcon travelogue
Aug. 29th, 2010 07:49 pmI tend to find travelogues very dull myself, so don't feel bad if you feel like scrolling by, but if nothing else other Worldcon goers might find some of this useful.
First off: when we checked into the Hilton and they took our credit card number they put a hold on the cost of our stay AND an extra hundred dollars a night. Which was more than we had on the card (we have a very low limit!), thankfully they were willing to wait until we had a chance to transfer some money across (and have yet to complain that, it being Sunday, the money is presumably still not there). No idea what they would have done if we didn't have the extra money to hand up front.

Am doing the last couple of preparation things for Worldcon, and thought I should ask this before I forget.
So! I would like recs for places in Melbourne to get the following dishes, since they are pretty much all I can eat out and it would be nice to have them cooked well. Nowhere that does creative things like adding butter or chili to udon, please(*)!
EDIT: My food restrictions.
(*)Yes I am looking at you fancy Perth Japanese restaurant with a large menu on which I can eat one entree and one mains.

- Teriyaki beef or similar eg Japanese
- A wide variety of sushi
- Dim sum (though this tends to disagree with me a little at the best of times so I might skip it)
- Bulgogi eg Korean
- Low-ish fat Chinese or Vietnamese style stirfries of the "meat and vegetables with stock/soy/oyster based sauce" variety (I don't know the real names of these dishes and "garlic chicken and vegetables" is a bit vague :))
- Steak or roast
- Meringues and pavlova
- Sorbet
- bread (less fussed about this one, but if there's an AMAZING bakery I might try it out)
