Are there any fantasy stories with democratic gods who follow the conscious decisions of their followers as a group? It's like... a typical god may be similar to a king who tries to listen to his citizens else he be deposed, but I'm looking for something more like a democratically elected president who was voted in and can be voted out.

This is an off-shoot of a discussion of Baldur's Gate 3/The Forgotten Realms but I think it should work for any fantasy setting where gods can be deliberately created or are a job mortals can take on, with powers reliant on simple things like their number of followers instead of anything numinous or mystical. I'm mostly thinking high fantasy set in a secondary world, but I guess it could work in other sorts of fantasy too.

As encountered by me while poking Wikipedia. I was specifically researching gods for TGCF/Heaven Official's Blessing, but I think this sort of thing is interesting for anyone with an interest in Chinese fantasy or folklore.

I don't know enough to judge if these wikipedia pages are accurate, and if people have better places to read up about this sort of thing, or any other info, I'd love to hear about it!

Went to the synagogue (Temple David) with Mum today. It was pretty cool! If very confusing: all the prayers are in Hebrew with a transliteration and english translation, and instead of having a separate hymn book with music and choruses etc they just sing a (to me) arbitrary subsection of the prayers. So it was like "Ok, we're singing the first two words again? And...going down three paragraphs and singing that bit then repeating the top line again and...now we're doing that English bit and OH GOD EVERYONE TURNED A PAGE WHERE ARE WE NOW there seems to be a lot of z's in this bit look for z's..."

Mum got us to sit next to her friend who always knows which page to be on and is happy to point it out, which he did indeed do for me when he noticed me being lost. Anyway, it was nice. Not unlike a uniting church service, the woman running things was very down to earth and friendly and there was a naming ceremony for a baby which was really sweet. A lovely sense of community, especially since mum's friends tried to make me feel welcome. And afterwards there were cupcakes! (I couldn't eat them but the kids looked happy)

Other than that: did I mention Cam got a job? He's working from home and quite enjoying it, we've quickly settled into a routine where I don't bug him during work hours unless I have to, but it's still nice having him around and being able to go in and ask if he wants anything from the shops etc.

House continues great! Asides from the many ants, ug. But being near a supermarket and library is super convenient, and being on the top of a hill gives a great view and lovely breezes (useful right now for drying laundry inside) Boxes continue to be opened and full of a mixture of happy suprises and "why didn't we throw this away already" crap. I offered mum some old tapes since her "new" car uses them:
Me: You know, the kind of thing I listened to as a teenager.
Mum: What...oh. That satanic death metal?
Me: It wasn't satanic death metal!
Mum: And it was all in german.
Me: No it wasn't! It was grunge.

Luckily I also had some classical music and Ben Harper, which she was very happy with.

I had a bit of a down swing healthwise recently and right now am recovering from all the standing in the synagogue (I didn't want to embarass mum by looking like a lazy non-jew daughter, especially since the old people were managing) But after that I have high hopes of ACTUALLY SOCIALISING WITH PEOPLE OMG.

I have a cold. I DO NOT WANT A COLD. THIS IS A VERY VERY BAD TIME FOR A COLD. So to distract myself from how much I really don't want to be sick (aaaargh moving and holiday ahhh), here's what I've been reading and watching etc.

Books:

The Circle of Magic: Tris's book by Tamora Pierce: On pause while I finish the library books below but enjoyable enough so far.

Lois Lens Lesbian Secretary by Monica Nolan: this is the delightfully cheesy tale of a 50s cheerleader who gets a job as a secretary in the big city and tries to figure out why she keeps having these FEELINGS around girls in tight sweaters and why none of the women she meets seem to have boyfriends. It's unfortunately hipster racist and overall not worth thinking about very hard but otherwise fun, like if Enid Blyton fell into a vat of soft porn.

The Little Book of Hindu Deities by Sanjay Patel: Not enjoying this very much. The author was raised as a Hindu but I'm not sure he is one, and there's something irritatingly twee about the tone. Also he has these "amusing" asides which assume attitudes I don't share eg that men having long hair is weird and girly.

The essentials of Hinduism: a comprehensive overview of the world's oldest religion by Swami Bhaskarananda: An accessible guide to the basics of Hinduism by someone who obviously loves the religion. It was very conventional and he did that typical thing of dividing attitudes neatly into "not actually part of my religion" and "part of my religion thus unambiguously awesome (except for a few bad apples doing it Wrong)", but he was obviously trying to be even handed and open minded and I certainly learned a lot.

(I read these last two because I'm writing a character from a Hindu background and have become frustrated with the "lol those wacky Hindus" attitude of secondary sources)

TV:

Sleepy Hollow: fun cheesy supernatural buddy cop drama in a small town with a ~mysterious past~. He's an 18th century soldier transported forward in time! She's a no nonsense cop! Together they're trying to stop the apocalypse! I find them both quite charming which helps a lot.

Orphan Black: Up to episode 4! I WILL FINISH THIS ONE DAY.

Marvel: Agents of SHIELD: Joss Whedon does a B grade family show about a Secret Government Agency Saving The Day. Ok, though some of the one liners felt forced and I had a few "JOSS NO" moments along with the "Teehee, this is definitely a Whedon show" moments.

Free: Season one is over and ended on a happy satisfying note that still left me hoping there's a season 2.

Games:

I already reviewed Dear Esther and Ristorante Amore.

The Knife of the Traitor: a silly macabre visual novel, it's very cheesy and rushed and feels like the people who made it were very young but I enjoyed it well enough and it's certainly a change from the usual. You play an amnesiac Evil Princess who's woken up with a knife in her throat and has to figure out which of the people who might justifiably want you dead stabbed you. The other characters are all male and there's romantic elements but it's not really a dating sim. I rolled my eyes a few times at some unfortunate choices in the writing but the art was pretty good, someone obviously had fun with the character design.

My mother has recently been heading towards converting to Judaism, and for her upcoming birthday asked for candlesticks and a "nice tea towel" to act as Challah cover for the Sabbath.

But I am not Jewish and know VERY LITTLE about Judaism, plus there isn't exactly a Jewish Supplies Superstore I can easily browse. Closest I could find was the Perth Hebrew Congregation Bookstore, which I may contact and try to check out (assuming they are wheelchair accessible), Tempe David (the one she goes to) also have a shop. But I assume both are overpriced and low on variety.

So! Do any of my local and/or Jewish followers have suggestions? For local places with nice candle sticks, advice on what makes a good challah cover, whatever. I'm paranoid I am going to get something TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE through ignorance, and am rather distracted by the upcoming move and holiday.

Boy it's good to be home! Had a blast this year, met and talked to lots of people. Feeling moderately drained but not entirely terrible, time will tell how much I crash tomorrow.

The cat is trying not to make it obvious how happy she is to see us and is currently curled up by my legs :)

Cam has been complaining for ages that he can't find the sort of books/graphic novels he's interested in: urban fantasy based on christian mythology and the fight between good and evil, possibly with a humanist subtext. I couldn't think of anything, so I thought I'd ask you guys.

The main examples he's encountered have been movies/tv: "Constantine"(*), "The Prophecy", "Fallen", Season 4 of Supernatural, "The Second Coming".

Bookwise he liked "Good Omens".

Not metaphorical or inspiring angels a la "Touched by an Angel" or "Angels in America". He's not christian at all, he just likes the mythology.

And yes, I suggested Evangelion but he said it looked too irritatingly fanservicey and dated.

One's I've read but don't think he'd like based on my knowledge of his taste: "Lucifer" (the Sandman spinoff) and "Damiano". I'm not sure about "Haibane Renmai" but I don't think it's what he's looking for.

NOTE: I'm not going to reply with whether or not stuff matches Cam's requirements, he can answer those himself (and probably won't, knowing him, though he is reading the comments) I may with reply with what I think of stuff, but that's different :)

(*)What I've read of Hellblazer was more generic horror than christian stuff so I didn't rec it.

EDIT: HMMMMM. So it would appear my framing of this question is flawed thanks to my simplistic understanding of religion and other such ineffable philosophical things my non-arts-major brain gets very confused by. I may take a while responding to comments while I have a serious think about what I really mean.

So most arguments I've seen for being religious use some very flawed arguments. Unfortunately, so do most arguments against being religious, and this bugs me (I'm always more annoyed at the flaws of "my side"). One of the main flaws in both(*) is an assumption that either you're christian or you're an atheist: thus if you can poke holes in atheism people must automatically convert to christianity, and if you can poke holes in Christianity you've proven atheism is the best choice.

And a lot of the time the "Christianity" people are criticising is a straw man anyway, based either on fairly extreme denominations or just particular annoying individuals.

So I thought I'd go through all the things atheists tend to say "all religions" do and see how many are actually true of all religions.

I've been pondering doing one of these for a while, but wasn't sure I'd get the wording right. Since it worked so well on his lj, I've decided to completely steal the language of [livejournal.com profile] angriest's recent post instead(*).

1. Tell me your religious beliefs. It can be as simple as "I am an X" or it can be a lengthy paragraph if you like. If you feel your religious and/or spiritual beliefs are private, either don't reply or leave a note saying as much.
2. If you want to reply to something someone else has written, feel free - particularly if you want to ask them a question about the religion you've always wanted to ask but have never been able to, or felt comfortable enough to.
3. This is one of the biggies: if someone asks you a question and you don't feel comfortable answering it, do not feel obliged to answer. Either don't reply at all, or drop a quick reply saying "I don't really want to answer that".
4. Religious intolerance will not be tolerated. I'm aiming this particularly at the aggressive atheists who seem to get their kicks scoring points, but the rule applies in any direction.

I know a lot of you are on both flists, I decided to do it now while it's still fresh in your heads. You are quite welcome to repeat/post a link to your comment over there! And yes [livejournal.com profile] fred_mouse I know you were also planning on stealing his idea, but, well, there's no reason it can't be stolen multiple times :D

(*)And yes, I checked it was ok. Don't want to be sued for copyright violation by the big mean famous writer :)

This conversation about the definition of atheist got me thinking about exactly what I believe, and I was curious to know if anyone else has a similar POV, since afaict I differ from most atheists. I went into it a bit here but I feel like having another go at describing it. I've used a God-believer/atheist dichotomy here but it applies just as much to other forms of spiritual experience.

So, I think we all have flawed perceptions of the world, and the best we can do is talk to other people and try to reconcile all our POVs into a semi-consistent description and hope we're not too far off the truth. (Thus, science)

Note: I am posting links to two posts in anti-racist communities. Keep in mind that the assumption is that readers are familiar and agree with anti-racist ideas so they're not explained or excused, and I'd rather you reply here unless you genuinely mean to join them (in which case, as always, read the userinfo first!) Also, as I say in the first post, please do not use this as a chance to snipe at other people's religious groups.

So a while ago I posted a post called How to reconcile anti-racism with atheism (or other religious belief) to [livejournal.com profile] debunkingwhite, and thought about posting it here since it's something I'm interested to discuss with other atheists but at the time didn't feel up to dealing with the discussion. But hey it's not like I have anything better to do at the moment...

I actually think Towards an Intersectionality of Atheism and Race is a better post on the subject, though :)

So I have just discovered the existence of Reza Aslan, a very interesting american muslim writer (watching this debate made me feel like converting from atheism to Islam as the more rational, pluralistic choice. That atheist guy! Such a moron!) Anyway, my favourite thing about him is this line from Wikipedia:
The Guardian newspaper in Britain reports that Aslan is a Shi'a Muslim.
(Second favourite is that he has groupies)

Also, via [livejournal.com profile] tevriel (nee sonnlich): Non newtonian fluids in action.

EDIT with amusing story:
Normally when I get other cat's scent on me Kira isn't too fussed, she just sniffs out of curiosity then makes sure to cover their scent with her own.
I went to visit [livejournal.com profile] kitsune_iii today and Storm was immediately drawn to my bag. "oh ho!" she was thinking "So this Kira thinks she own this bag huh?"
So she rubbed herself all over it as much as possible, and then curled up against it for some time looking cheerfully smug.
When I came home Kira wandered past my bag and then stopped, sniffed it, and became immediately tense, tail sticking out all frizzed up and everything. For quite some time she'd wander past, sniff it again and again get all narky, she was not happy with me. I get the feeling Storm made the cat-scent equivalent of a rude gesture at her :)

O-day was fun, I ate waaaay too much free sugar and ended up with almost no voice at [livejournal.com profile] the_riviera_kid's going away thing. Met several adorable children (Quinn Basden and my supervisors(*) kids, who I haven't seen for so long it's like they're new people)

Wait, how is it 10:30 already?

And now, some topical humour. I'm quite proud of this one.

(*) No, not the one whose youngest has nearly finished his engineering degree :P

First, to anyone who saw the wedding post I accidentally posted here..heh, just be glad I'm not on any weirder communities :) (Though with me, the worst you'd be likely to get is some technical discussion on right-angle-weave beading or abstract algebra)

Also, Alinta Gas, Australia Post and the Commonwealth Bank are all out to get me. It's all fixed, though now the phone company is refusing to acknowledge a bill as being paid... Man, I was having a bad drawing day. Oh well.

Finally, something that keeps coming up in conversation but I don't want to derail the topic just to settle a minor point of accuracy: I get the feeling some people think I'm really very jewish, which I'm not. Not that this is the worst thing ever, I just like things being categorised correctly. My mothers mother was brought up as a liberal jew and became an atheist, while my mothers father and everyone on my dads side is whitebread anglo/irish/ukranian etc. I was brought up to be an anglican and then became an atheist. I didn't even realise I was of jewish descent till I was about 10, but still feel a disproportionate connection to that side of the family because my dad and mums dad are not the sort to talk about their families, while my mum and mums mum so incredibly are :) By one definition I am 100% jewish (since it carries down the maternal line) but by most others I'm really not. There!

Oh, yeah, and I and Cam are thinking of moving to England in a few years (just for a while, not permanently). You all knew that, right? *cough*

In other news, I have a headache.
