So, this is mostly for my own future benefit because I keep forgetting my own methods. But I'll try to explain things enough that it might be useful to other people too. You should be moderately competent with whatever art program you're using, and have some idea about colours and shading.

My basic philosophy is: realism is boring, and mistakes add texture.

For the prompt Zuko back when he was young, angry and had the ponytail. Showing off - juggling fireballs.

This turned out way better than I was expecting. Bits of it are very slapdash but I've spent like a gazillion hours on it so at least for now am done.

Inspired, would you believe, by the amazing thanfiction drama: people kept posting his terrible photoshopped "paintings" and I thought "Wow, I could do better than that" (while I traced/copied a lot of it, the only bit of mine which is just a photo with a filter and a few strokes of "paint" is the flames. Flames are hard!)

For christmas this year my pen-friend Genevieve gave me a tiny little painting easel and canvas. I spent a while thinking about what to do with it and then was suddenly inspire to make a painting for her with it for her birthday. Which was today, and she just emailed me to say thanks, so I can post about it. (She doesn't read my lj as a rule but you never know!)

This is what I was so desperate to get white paint for :) This shot shows how tiny the canvas is!

Based on this picture I found by googling 'self portrait'.

I'm quite happy with this, and since Crazy Clarks has tiny easels cheap I might do some more.

So this isn't a very good picture, but I'm posting it anyway because
a) It took about an hour and a half from "Goddamit I have the paints out and I feel like painting, I'll make something crap that doesn't need white" to "I can't be bothered painting any more".
b) I didn't use any white! (The little you can see is the original canvas)
c) It shows off the shiny camera [livejournal.com profile] distantcam got me. Still haven't gotten the hang of the settings yet which is why it's so grainy but I'm sure I will pretty quickly.

Christmas has overall been really nice, even if I have a headache. Night all, hope you had a lovely day!

So I was ALL INSPIRED to paint this picture, and I did a colour sketch and printed it out and penciled in the lines and got the paper out and readied the brushes and then I realised I LIEFT MY WhiTE pAinT At fEMcON!!!!!!!!!(*)

NOOOOOOooooooooooo!!!!!!!! You can't paint ANYTHING without white paint! And tomorrow is a public holiday!!!!!

*stares into the abyss*

On the plus side maybe now my muse will let me eat. It wasn't letting me before.

(*)This was how this came out when I typed it. See how distraught I am?

I got all inspired to paint last weekend, but I kept being put off by the fact that I paint so rarely that I keep making rookie mistakes (man do I love the "undo" in digital art), so decided to do something so self indulgent and fun that I'd enjoy painting it even if it went horribly wrong.

Thus, a combination of pretty much everything I like to draw when I'm feeling self indulgent: floating islands in the sky, clouds, trees, books, dragons/stuff with wings, windows/mirrors, and a blatant self insert character:

Inspired very much by the zepellin-heavy Dr Who episode "The Rise of the Cybermen" I saw just before it. (The painting is set inside a passenger carrier attached to a dragon)

It really was fun, and went better than my last painting (about 6 years ago, not counting clay scultpures) But by GOD did I miss the ability to undo. And layers! Guh! I spent pretty much the whole time wanting to repaint the sky but being unable too cos there was other stuff painted over it. And then the cat jumped on the painting while it was still wet! *has just finished cleaning up the little pawprints off the wooden floorboards*
