So I have the odd nightmare where disturbing things happen and I am disturbed. But last night I had a cheerful, mildly romantic dream where disturbing things happened and I thought it was TOTALLY FINE, only going "what the hell that is messed up" as I headed towards wakefulness.

Last night I had a dream which I'm like 80% sure was based on a book I read as a kid/teen and it's bugging me:

The setting was a mish-mash fascist dystopia YA. When you reached 14 there was the typical Coming Of Age Training and Choice, you drank a liquid because of Reasons, and it turns out it has a certain probability of killing you. In the dream the good outcome was that if you'd been chosen for Strategy it counteracted the intelligence dampening drugs they put in the water supply (which I'd been secretly avoiding somehow anyway. So it was nice to stop having to pretend to be as unintelligent as everyone else. YES DREAM NICE SYMBOLISM) But it's the liquid that can kill you that's bugging me.

And now random dream ramblings:

I can't see this being interesting for anyone other than me. I just felt like writing it out, and will probably add to it over time.

Common themes: Underground passageways, weird little malls, islands in any large body of water, confusing streets, places all blurring together. I have a terrible sense of direction and it shows :) Also my subconscious has barely noticed any changes in my life since the nineties. I often only remember the existence of Cam halfway through the dream and then shoehorn him into the plot.

(I tried lying down with my eyes closed but that just emphasised how weird it feels)

[community profile] yuletart has been posting for a while, mine went up today hurrah. Lots of great art this year!

Had an interesting science fictiony dream about time travel and alternate universes last night. Made me want to write a complex, internally consistent time travel story but those are so hard to get right.

So close to the end of Glitch :( :( Have been scattering my hoarded possessions in mildly artistic ways. The fact that I DON'T EVEN FEEL LIKE HOARDING MONEY is a definite sign of the end of days.

Have been playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It's lots of fun, including spotting which ideas Bioware reused in Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I was worried I'd find the objective Dark Side/Light Side morality annoying, but so far all my light side points have been from stuff like protecting poor aliens from human bigots, healing the sick, or defending women from sexual harassment with my sexy jedi teammate (sadly I'm pretty sure this is before Bioware got into making love interests bi :( ) And while I've never thought of myself as that much of a Star Wars fan I get a pretty big kick from talking to wookies and droids and stuff (I KILLED A RANKOR AW YISS) The fighting is thinly veiled turn based, which takes out all my time based combat anxiety, especially on easy mode. Except for the TWO compulsory timing based minigames I've encountered already :/ (One I eventually defeated, the second still has me stumped)

EDIT: Oh and unlike other Bioware games you get to choose your character's surname. So my current PC is Visha Verhier, female light side scout :D

I eventually got back to sleep and had very odd dreams. Just as I was heading towards wakefulness I looked up and saw an audience of aliens in theatre seats watching me (though most had gotten bored and were reading newspapers), and right at the back was Agent K from Men in Black grinning and eating popcorn. It was very surreal.

Via [personal profile] cofax7 , a meme, edited to not be so country specific.

Bold the ones you have and use at least once a year, italicize the ones you have and don't use, strike through the ones you have had but got rid of:
pasta machines, breadmakers, juicers, blenders, deep fat fryers, egg boilers, melon ballers, sandwich makers, pastry brushes, cheese knives, electric woks, miniature salad spinners, griddle pans, jam funnels, meat thermometers, filleting knives, egg poachers, cake stands, garlic crushers, margarita glasses, tea strainers, bamboo steamers, pizza stones, coffee grinders, milk frothers, piping bags, banana stands, fluted pastry wheels, tagine dishes, conical strainers, rice cookers, steam cookers, pressure cookers, slow cookers, spaetzle makers, cookie presses, gravy strainers, double boilers (bains marie), sukiyaki stoves, ice cream makers, and fondue sets.

Some of these really do get used about once a year though. That said, my diet has changed quite a lot in the last few years: I used to make lot of pies and milkshakes, for example. (the milk frother was a quiz night prize anyway)

(I had very broken sleep, which involved a lot of vague pondering)

In the world of Buffy etc, could you say "I invite you in as long as you're not a vampire"? Or "All welcome except vampires"?

And then I started thinking about the exact meaning of "invitation" and remembered that logic and fantasy don't necessarily mix.

Also, I had a dream where I was one of a group of tiny people from a parallel universe who got trapped on Earth. We eventually settled in a small model village in a DisneyLand-esque theme park and pretended to be little robots as part of the attraction. In the dream I thought "This is like in that movie/tv show" but on waking couldn't remember if I'd actually stolen the plot from anywhere or if I'd made it up (the "pretending to be robots" thing, the setup is rather Diggers-y)

So I spent the other day playing and reading about a bird dating sim. Yesterday I decided to explore Bayswater a bit more in my wheelchair and came across...a bird sanctuary. It was super fun to drive around (even if I got a little sunburnt) but also a little surreal. And then this morning, posts on my dash about a pigeon war hero. *waits for humanity to die of a deadly virus, paving the way for our pigeon overlords*

Speaking of which, last night I dreamt I ended up in the audience for an american late night show. "Ug, Jimmy Fallon" I said. "No, no, Jimmy (something else), the other guy." said my sister. "Huh, I've never seen his show," says I. We watched some Mass Effect 3 movie that turned into a story about aliens taking over the world and trying to destroy humanity (well, they were actually uplifting us to a higher state of being by making us think we were being wiped out, then harvesting and brainwashing our children as slaves and killing all the adults. Anyway)

This morning, on my reader? A clip from Jimmy Kimmel's late night show about gay marriage destroying humanity via a deadly virus.

(Admittedly, the other Jimmy in my dream was Chinese American. Details, details)

Cat pouts sadly.
Me: Minnie, I'm so sorry that my best friend gaining his god like powers inadvertently gave you god like powers too. I mean, how you could you help becoming a supervillain? You have a cat's desire or power, a cat's desire to kill everything you see, a cat's....
(closeup on floral designs on cat's supervillain cloak)
Me: Wait, cats don't like...
Cat smiles an evil grin.

I wake up.

Me: Well that was odd. Hmmph, seem to be awake now, might as well get up.
*wander blearily into kitchen*

Kira: Miao!
Me: You're not a supervillain plotting some evil scheme are you?
Kira: Miao?
*I prepare her a cup of fresh water and a clean plate. I pick up the cat food box...and the lid is ajar, so that cat food spills all over the kitchen floor*
Kira: Floor candy! Nom Nom Nom ^_^
Me: HMMMMMM

This has been running around my head all morning, so I'm going to write it down. I found it involving, but objectively it's pretty derivative and generic. I read some stuff about Mary Sues before bed and I think that influenced my subconscious :D

Contains some briefly described violence/needles.

Last night, as the result of a "fic you would never write" meme, [personal profile] lizbee wrote me the perfect highschool AU for Avatar: the Lat Airbender. It's femslash! Set in Australia! And doesn't ignore the character's canon disabilities! And is also very funny and in character and sweet. Core Skills. (EDIT: Now with a working link!)

Anyway, after thinking about it and various other stories about adolescent characters, I went to sleep and had a dream which at the time I was convinced was based on some YA book I'd read years ago but on waking I think I invented. I'd be curious to know if anyone recognises any part of it though.

Policeman: So as we can see from the dartboard, the murder victim was disabled. And right handed. I assume neither of you are right handed.
Me: Wait, no, I'm right handed!
Policeman: Oh dear.
Me: And disabled! OH GOD, I'M THE VICTIM.
*wake up*

(Also there were bugs everywhere, it was gross)
