Re the Stardew Valley update: I fell asleep at about midnight, then woke up bolt upright at 3am.

Read the discord:

It's out in 45 minutes!
[link to tweet from ConcernedApe about making coffee]
OK THINGS ARE GETTING TOO MUCH SHUTTING DOWN CHANNELS FOR A BIT
IT'S OUT!!!! REMINDER TO POST ALL SPOILERS IN THE NEW 1.6 CHANNEL

and muted the discord for the indefinite future. I played a bit until my brain would let me sleep again, then I woke up again at 8am and am now feeling kinda jetlagged. The only difference so far is the new farm type but that's fun!

f5 for 1.6

Currently hanging out in the mod making channels of the Stardew Valley discord waiting for version 1.6 to launch. It's a major update, affecting both the story and the underlying code.

I haven't felt this sort of group vibe of "Ooh what will the new content be" enthusiasm mixed with "oh god what will this break" trepidation and "But WHEN WILL IT UPDATE" uncertainty since waiting for Homestuck updates back in the day.

Players have nothing to worry about (except for mods maybe breaking), and mod makers had access to a coding alpha, but until we see the new story content a lot of us don't know exactly how much editing we're going to have to do to make our existing mods compatible with the new content.

But also, new content! Exciting!

It's like 5am in much of the US, many people have stayed up waiting for ConcernedApe (the creator and primary dev) to wake up in California and press the button. It's approaching 11pm here but I don't feel like going to sleep just yet.

The discord mods have been making increasingly unhinged posts in the bulletin board channel that THEY WILL PING US WHEN IT UPDATES. Apparently so many people joined the server at once that discord flagged it as suspicious lol. Meanwhile the 1.6 alpha channel is everyone waving goodbye before it gets archived.

And then of course once it DOES come out... hoo boy.

Imagine you join a discord (or other similar online group social space with rules and moderators) which has this rule: you're not allowed to say anything too self-deprecating. If you do, you must say three nice things about yourself.

The discord otherwise seems appealing.

Poll #30044 Discord/forum rule against self depreciation
Open to: Registered Users, detailed results viewable to: Just the Poll Creator, participants: 40

How would you feel about the rule?

Very positive!
2 (5.0%)

Mildly positive
4 (10.0%)

Neutral/mixed/depends significantly on context
18 (45.0%)

Overall negative but I can probably live with it
10 (25.0%)

NOPE that's a dealbreaker
6 (15.0%)

I never use that kind of site/otherwise can't answer
2 (5.0%)

Asking because I have seen people reblog this tumblr post mentioning such a rule positively, and I also once encountered this rule on what I think was a separate discord (rather than being for a group of friends it was for a fandom that poster does not appear to be interested in) So it seems a non-negligible number of people are cool with such rules.

But my reaction is very negative, and I'm curious to find out how unusual that is. Thus, a poll! I also just want to get across that some people are seriously troubled by such rules, but am genuinely unsure how that compares to the number who would significantly benefit from them.

Note: I'm not asking about variants like self deprecation being discouraged but there's no actual consequences, or whether you find this kind of rule helpful to enforce inside your own head or in other very different kinds of social situations. Nor am I distinguishing between how you would feel about the rule being applied to you, versus your assumptions about a space that has such a rule. If you have different feelings about Discord versus other social spaces, just answer for Discord.

Just: would encountering this specific rule in a real discord overall feel like a positive thing or a negative thing.

Fannish links relating to the novels and adaptations of MXTX: MDZS/The Grandmaster of Cultivation/The Untamed, Scum Villain's Self Saving System, TGCF/Heaven Offical's Blessing

The MXTX Tavern: A discord for discussion of all the novels, as well as all the adaptations, for people over 18. So far people are pretty friendly and fun to chat to, and while still leaning young it's less overwhelmingly Actual Teens than the last MXTX-related discord I tried. The MDZS discussion (each book has it's own opt-in channels) has a lot of Untamed content but isn't just about The Untamed, which works for me.

[twitter.com profile] mxtx_bargainbin An exchange where people finish each other's stalled fanfic WIPs based on the novels of MXTX. Run by the MXTX Tavern folk.

MDZS Audiodrama | Drunk Lan Wangji Bathtub Scene Animation using the subtitled audio drama for the dialogue, of the scene where Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian's building UST ends in drunken makeouts. Well drawn, romantic, hot, and slightly less overtly dubconny than the novel version.

Youtube then recced me this video of the scene where they actually declare their feelings but it's basically just the audio with subtitles. Which is a pity because I would LOVE to see a version with everyone else's YOU ARE DECLARING YOUR FEELINGS NOW?? faces. I'm not sure how well it works without the rest of the romantic context,

The irc-like chat program Discord is the new shiny fannish social media. One advantage over irc is that it shows all messages posted, not just the ones you're there for, which makes for a better ongoing conversation. The advantage over tumblr etc is the ability to have private-ish, moderated, communal conversations. The advantage over message boards and mailing lists is that it's new and shiny.

I quite like it but it can be tricky finding servers (eg chat rooms) relevant to my interests. Currently I'm only a member of public ones, so I can share the links freely. Here are all the ones I know about.
