That's 20 years of dating, we've only been married for 12 years, but we don't care about that so much. It's strange looking back on 20 years together, thinking about how much has happened and how much we've changed. We had NO IDEA what we were doing at 19 (me) and 21 (Cam), so the fact we tumbled into a functional relationship that's survived 20 years of ups and downs feels like a miracle. I mean we did try very hard to communicate honestly etc. We just didn't expect that to work.
We met at a party in December 1998, where we were both avoiding unwanted suitors and wanting distraction from recent breakups. So when we found ourselves next to a cute, charming stranger on a two person couch we avoided our usual self consciousness/over-thinking, all I AM TALKING TO THIS CUTIE AND STAYING WHERE I AM AND HAVING FUN, SCREW YOU UNIVERSE. And then it turned out we were both enrolled in 3rd year computer science at the same uni in 1999, so we avoided lectures together in the scifi club and bonded. At a party in early March we both made a concerted effort to flirt with each other and got our wires largely crossed, but somehow figured out we were mutually interested just in time for my dad to come pick me up to go home. And on March 8 1999 we sat next to each other in the scifi club and slowly and shyly held hands and then after like...two hours one of us asked "So are we...dating...??" and the other one said "I think so???" and the rest is history :D
I remember emailing our mutual friend
