alias_sqbr: Torchwood spoilers for various episode numbers: Jack dies (torchwood spoilers)
So, I finally finished Season 4 of Supernatural (well, the episodes Cam said were worth watching) and now I'm curious to read some fic and maybe see other fanworks. But most of it isn't what I'm after.

Basically, I felt the show brought up a lot of interesting stuff to do with theology and the nature of free will etc and then didn't address it very well, so I'd like fic (or art or vids) that does. Bonus points for lots of female characters, humanism, and feminism, double negative points for only caring about Sam And Dean's Unique Manpain, seeing women primarily as sex objects, or having a black and white "Just trust in God" morality.
More details, and some recs )

No hugs!

I've been meaning to make a post about this for ages but it refuses to come out right.

So: on the whole I don't like hugs. That includes virtual *hugs*. I am for some reason ok with "positive vibes". Touching in general I'm wierd about. It's not a fear thing, or a sex thing (mostly, though that does make things more fraught), it's more an emotional thing. It doesn't mean I don't like you!

I'm...weird about emotions. I have real trouble expressing them, and by the time I'm at a point where I can talk about something that makes me sad I'm usually not actually feeling that sad about it, and people comforting me as if I am sad makes me Very Uncomfortable(*).

I also tend to get weirded out by flirting, even if it's obvious the other person is joking. (Though sometimes I'm not) On the whole I get uncomfortable talking about sex, though this is the result of neurosis not conservatism (or lack of interest! :)), and the more dispassionate and intellectual the discussion the more comfortable I am.

Aaaannd that's enough of that. You can ask questions if you feel you need clarification but I may have trouble answering. Right now I feel like I've been holding my hand to a mild electrical current (a rough approximation of my mental response to thinking about things that make me feel neurotic).

(And thanks again to [personal profile] livewareissue for the icon :))

(*)The primary motivation for this post being that I can link to it when I think I'm in danger of being given lots of *hug*s

Another Hugo nominee, this one from the library since it's not in the packet afaict.

On the whole, I really liked it. Probably my favourite Hugo nominee so far.
EDIT (having read Wikipedia): This is actually the end of a run, which I'm going to go find the previous issues of. This post may be spoilery for previous issues of the comic.

I have a few issues though:
1)It's part of an ongoing superhero comic narrative, and gives huge amounts of exposition-y backstory, yet also assumes the reader has some context I was obviously missing. I don't know that all of it was necessary either.
2)The plot moved very fast, and a lot of things weren't so much story as illustrated plot summary. This plus the previous issue made a lot of it feel like the storyboards for a much longer story.
3)Every now and then I got a skeevy vampires=Jews subtext. I definitely don't think it was deliberate, nor that Paul Cornell is necessarily particularly anti-Semitic, just that the particular plot choices he made combined together unfortunately. YMMV.

Anyway, basically Dracula decides to take over Britain and the British superheroes + Blade (EDIT: who is apparently English!) band together to try and defeat him. And it's very Marvel, but it's also intelligently written and exciting and interesting.
No particular spoilers, just rambles )

Just discovered this, remarkably similar taste to Thai Green curry given that it doesn't contain most of the major ingredients, or maybe I've just forgotten what that tastes like... Nice even if you don't have an intolerance to chilli, most curry spices and coconut :)

Makes 1 serve (since it was an experiment!)

Spices:
garlic powder, fresh onion, fresh ginger, tumeric, cinnamon, cardomon, coriander powder, lots of salt and pepper

Sauce:
1 Tb Peanut butter
1.5 Tb beef stock
1/2 a banana
1tB fresh coriander

Vegetables:
Brocolli and spinach

Mix chicken with spices. Fry. Mix in sauces. Mix in vegetables. Simmer.

Realise you've screwed up the rice :( Eat some anyway. Make lj post.

(Yay to furriku for inspiring me :))
