"In a text post, list ten fics that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” works, or even all the same pairing or fandom, just the fics that have touched you or that stuck with you somehow."

From tumblr. Chosen by going through my bookmarks and seeing which ones jumped out at me. A lot of these are VERY OLD since I have gotten harder to wow as I've read more fic. Sixteen not ten because don't make me chooooose. And yes there is a suprsing amount of Stargate considering I don't actually like the canon, when I first got into fic that was what I encountered the most of and the fandom produced a wide range of interesting stuff. (Also lots of robots which should not be surprising at all)

Mostly prompts and monster girls. I experimented a lot with style and colour, with varying levels of success. This Harry Potter fanart of Luna Lovegood is probably my favourite.

For the prompt Teal'c and Drey'auc having a relaxing holiday where no-one is trying to kill anyone else.

EDIT: HEADDESK How did I read that as Bra'tac? Oops. Well, imagine Drey'auc is of to the side somewhere *cough* Here's an updated version (not as good, unfortunately, since I wasn't feeling inspired about the picture any ore) .

Drawn to celebrate my new graphics tablet yaaaaay. (Thus done very quickly because I wanted to do a whole picture in one sitting)

Next page of ACOS.

Ronon in a suit for this prompt.

Graphics tablet seems to have finally died :( :(

Last night I discoevered [livejournal.com profile] swirlygate, a set of 5 short fun web-episodes set on "Swirlygate Atlantis" starring Joan Sheppard and Meredith McKay. Anyway, in the "Bloopers and Thanks" section they encourage people to think about gender and race etc in the show themselves, and I was suddenly struck by the image of a male Teyla and female Ronon (everyone else's clothes are rather unisex), and what that said about the way men and women (and POC men and women in particular) are dressed on tv.

And so: Ronon Dex as a woman.

Based on this image. Inspired by the various genderswapped superhero images I've seen, specifically [livejournal.com profile] logansrogue and [livejournal.com profile] originalnilson's.

Teyla would unfortunately require a lot more thought since I don't want him looking like a guy in drag. I may do it eventually.

I need to work on my shading. I spend ages on the shadows and it still all ended up looking rather washed out :/

After discovering a bunch of comms and challenges etc (which you can find in my userinfo) I've actually reached the point of having enough femslash, so have been reading [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine recs.

Absolutely the best so far is walked right out of the machinery by [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong, actual honest to goodness science fiction SG1 gen. It's an AU of Abyss and explores the whole Tokra thing MUCH better than the show EVER did. A really good Jack centered piece too.

So Stargate Night was a worthy experiment, and ended in the middle of season 7. I thought I would do a summary of how I felt about the first 6 seasons, maybe doing the rest if and when I watch them.

Episodes from this list, ones added by Cam in italics. They do tend to be the ones I disliked...

Overall: cheesey, silly, unoriginal, but often fun and thrilling if you don't think too hard and some genuinely interesting ideas here and there. So Racist OMG.

Next prompt, for [livejournal.com profile] elaran: rodney has a child attached to his leg and teyla looking all fondly upon him and ronon and sheppard loling

Made much easier by the images on this page, since pretty much every other image I could find has them all looking so serious.

Also, I got my drabble, yay! (It's the second one down)

[livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow's prompt.

I realised early on this would take me FOREVER if I was all finicky, so I was rather slapdash. I think it came out ok overall though some bits are completely wrong (the perspective on the balcony for example)
Stargate Atlantis:the team explore the city -- somewhere high )

So Cam has the full ten seasons of Stargate SG1, and I decided I felt like watching some of it. Since the episodes tend to be fairly stand alone and of variable quality I looked up the best 50 episodes and sorted them (see below poll) and then thought it would be nice to use this as an opportunity to see people, since it wouldn't involve me having to go out or talk much and thus is less prone to the "me getting sick and canceling" effect (of course, since it's at my house, me canceling is a bigger deal)

Edit: I live in Bayswater, walking distance from the Bayswater trainstation (though it's not a very short walk)

I was thinking three-four episodes, probably starting at about 6:30 on every second Wednesday night, people provide their own dinner with the possibility of arriving earlier and making a combined order of something. Episodes divided up so that people can miss a night and not miss the end of a cliffhanger. Anyone got any suggestions along those lines?

The word "race" means many things in sff: real life ethnic groups (europeans, africans etc), fictional ethnic groups (Numenorans, Darthacans etc), and (possibly non-human) sentient species (vulcans, elves etc)

Often these fictional "races" are used as a metaphor for, or draw upon, real life ethnic or cultural issues. This can be done well, part of the long tradition of sff using metaphor to make broad and powerful statements about the human condition. But often these stories are warped by the authors unexamined prejudices, as well as the problems inherent in equating the arbitrary divisions of race and culture to the objective biological divisions between species.

In Part One of this essay I go through some of the issues involved with using non-human species as a metaphor for race. In Part Two (if I write it) I'll go through some of the issues with using made-up ethnic groups and cultures as a metaphor for real ones.

EDIT: I never wrote Part 2, but here are the notes for a panel I took part in on the subject.

Disclaimer: I'm feeling sleepy and stupid but need to get this out of my head (I've been putting off posting it for like a year while it gets longer and longer in my head) I know I'm prone to over-generalisations and am not all that good at expressing myself, but please don't point out my minor errors without also thinking about my actual point. Though really, if anyone read the whole thing at all I'll be grateful :)

I don't really have a point as such (beyond pointing out how dodgy it all can be), just disconnected thoughts. It's not something I've seen explored beyond discussions of individual stories, and I'd like to get the ideas out of my head and hear other people's POV. I'm considering a Swancon panel on a topic like this, and also may do a redraft and post to a relevant community, so any and all suggestions, corrections or thoughts would be VERY appreciated.

Oh, and if the length of the disclaimer didn't tip you off: it's LONG.

This was originally posted on my blog. A year and a half has passed, my feelings haven't changed, apart from happiness at the recent P&P having a more accurate Lydia :)
