This was great. Weird, but in exactly the way I like.

Content note: mention of suicide.

SO THIS TOOK ME A WHILE, HUH.

Code Realize is the game of the month at [community profile] otome_games, and thinking about it again inspired me to dig up my Playstation controller and finish this after getting 3/4 through more than a year ago.

Despite me losing momentum, it's very cute. There's just no choices to keep my attention, and established relationship fluff isn't as appealing to me as getting-together arcs. But I still had some feels!

I'll give relevant backstory for anyone who either doesn't know the plot of Code Realize, or has forgotten it.

I started this months ago, got partway through, and then couldn't motivate myself to keep going. So here's what I wrote.

Just some fluffy cuteness set after canon, mostly a lot of established relationship fluff but some nice moments with the other characters and relationships too.

The "Normal End" is sadder than some of the "Bad End"s, I'm glad I used a walkthrough! None of these were SUPER upsetting for me, but they are melancholy, and there's themes of suicide.

And that's the end of the main game!

I liked it! Both as an overall game, and this path in particular. Lupin is a bit too well-adjusted to be entirely my type but it was still a sweet romance, and an AMAZING ridiculous rollercoaster of anime scifi tropes.

Also, being the Final Path it did a nice job of tying up all the other plots and giving everyone some closure.

Content note: WEIRD quasi-incestuous familial abuse, genocide, suicide

TIME FOR THE FINAL BOY

I'm really enjoying it so far! Since Lupin's route only unlocks after you've completed the others, there's references to the other plots, which makes for some nicely layered worldbuilding.

I played the start of this before finishing Van Helsing's route, just to make sure it's not about, like, zombies or something (I have trust issues thanks to the unexpected serial killer)

I wasn't expecting to enjoy it that much: Impey's the sort of slightly sleazy and buffoonish but good hearted comic relief character who's perfectly likeable but not really standard romance material. And the romance did not, overall, really click for me, though it had some cute moments and they were endearingly fond of each other.

Also there was, as expected, a lot of Nemo, and he is. SO. ANNOYING.

Some very unfortunate implications were made about genocide and colonisation. But there was a lot of science, and some of it actually made sense.

So....not entirely terrible, overall. But there's a reason I took nine days to finish the damn thing.

OK SO THAT WAS STRESSFUL. But I did enjoy it overall.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the portrayal of redemption after committing war crimes, and the whole "trauma leads to violence" thing is...not great. But it was emotionally affecting and did this sort of redemption arc better than most stories which try it. And it is an effectively angsty woobie tsundere romance.

Content note: Violence (including between romantic partners), genocide, suicide, mental illness and PTSD handled rather unfortunately

I had a little bit of a go again at Van Helsing and didn't hate it but still haven't gotten over the huge discrepancy between what I wanted it to be and what it is. So in the meantime am going to play Saint-Germain, who I have no expectations for at all.

And it was quite entertainingly unexpected! I am enjoying it a lot, but I have some dark tastes.

Content Note: HMMM I don't want to totally spoil it but...violence? Unhealthy relationships? Also references to rape in other games I have played, because I thought it might be going that way but it wasn't. And a little gore.

Me this morning: I'm going to do things today and not just play dating sims!
Me at 3pm: Answered an email, time to smooch the war criminal.

The new stuff during the common route was cute and Van Helsing himself is endearing, but uurgh the path has one of my least favourite tropes :(

Content Note: a mentally ill misogynistic serial killer UUUURGHHHHH

Plus, you know, the hero's a genocidal war criminal, which rationally should bother me more, but hey.

I was going to say "but it's mostly upbeat" then remembered how tense I was the whole time. It's good, though! And I can promise it doesn't end on a cliffhanger :) (Something I used to think went without saying for the good end of a dating sim, NAMELESS)

The end of the Common Route!

It is. QUITE. INTENSE. There's more discussion of genocide and some other stuff that made me cry.

I am feeling under the weather today and Cam pointed out I can just plug the headphones into the controller so time to lie on the couch and flirt with a nerd.

...and it's, uh. Quite a journey!

A dating sim about a young woman who destroys everything she touches teaming up with a group of men (loosely based on fictional characters like Victor Frankenstein) to save Steampunk England from her mad scientist father.

Overall I really enjoyed it, and it's a wild, romantic, and well-made ride. Lots of completely ridiculous sexy science and scientists :D Some parts didn't click for me but generally for reasons specific to my tastes (eg I'm not a fan of serial killer plots or love interests who are sure the heroine is into them from the start) I have very mixed feelings on the treatment of trauma and genocide/war crimes.

I'm playing Code: Realize ~Bouquet of Rainbows~ for the Playstation 4, which combines the original "Code: Realize − Guardian of Rebirth" and the fan disc "Code: Realize − Future Blessings". I've finished all the True Ends and extra scenes for Guardian of Rebirth.

The main summaries all include the True Ending. You can skip the bad and normal endings without missing much. I would otherwise recommend reading everything in order, or at least reading the whole common route before any of the paths. Future Blessings is set after Guardian of Rebirth.
