Since I'm awake at 5am and Cam would probably complain if I went back to playing, a post! Full of SCIENCE.
So it turns out Lupin isn't actually after Cardia's heart, he's after her dad Isaac, and (where have I heard this before...) hopes she can help find him.
HA BUT SHE SAYS NO
Cardia: It doesn't matter what happens to me, but Father said I should stay in the mansion, or I'll hurt people.
Lupin: D: Ok, so. (a) If you come with me we can find you doctors and maybe also your dad (b) Your dad is a dick (c)OBVIOUSLY WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU MATTERS HOLY CRAP
First choice of the game! Take his hand vs refuse. AND HERE'S ME NOT HAVING LOOKED UP A WALKTHROUGH.
Haa he flirtatiously warns her that a cute girl like her will get hit on by lots of men in London and she just nods seriously.
Impey appears in a cloud of smoke with their ride, a highly modified car that will definitely not break down on the way to London don't make me look bad in front of the cute girl, Lupin. He's cheerfully flirtatious and a bit scatterbrained (and...planning on going to the moon??) but just as full of his own brilliance as Lupin. The two of them have a bantery friendship.
Impey: If you desire full service love maintenance, I can provide it ;D
Lupin: *punches him in the face*
Me: On the one hand, I understand, on the other hand it would probably be better to explicitly say that copping a feel will lose him a hand...or not, I guess >.>
(hee I think he just said "come on Engine-chan, you can do it!")
The working of NeoSteam engines is somewhat explained and I mutter internally about what I'm pretty sure is a violation of the basic principals of thermodynamics. Lupin also explains about how Steel London has become huge and heavily fortified in the last 5 years, "helping keep Europe from war", I'd not have expected a Frenchman to be so blithe. I'm beginning to suspect the writers' idea of "French" is "English, but more charming and says mademoiselle".
There's a huge wall around the city, which is divided into Central London, Lowtown etc and even forested parts. Lupin goes off to scout for danger as they approach.
Impey: Alone at last, Miss Cardia...
Cardia, who has still not learned about the concept of flirting: Yes ^_^
Impey, in a seductive voice: Why don't we discuss something interesting. Like...The newest models of steam engines...;)
And then he goes to stroke her cheek with his bare hand.
Cardia: You'll...die???
Impey: Haha oops I forgot!
(I've almost stopped hearing him as Okita)
Ooh so Isaac created the mysterious Twilight task force! And Lupin thinks they're planning on some major terrorist act with the boobgem (I am never going to remember how to spell Horologium) Impey talks up how Lupin is a Hero(tm).
Cardia's desire to find her father and ask him why he's doing all this is very Hakuoki-ish, but I like how nice they are to her right away compared to all the WE WILL KILL YOU IF YOU STEP OUT OF LINE.
Anyway, Lupin came across wanted posters for the "terrorist" Victor Frankenstein. Apparently he used to be a Royal Alchemist (heh, I recognise that word)
The art does this nice inset thing (screenshot added 2 days later when I figured out how to transfer them)
Impey: Me 'n the missus are herr to see the soights o' London. Roight, Natasha? ;)
Cardia: Who's Natasha?
Impey: *whispering* IT'S AN ACT. PLAY ALONG.
Cardia: You have to tell me these things in advance!
She did just start learning about basic human communication this morning, Impey.
The guards are understandably suspicious.
Impey: Take this! HYPNO...FLAAAAASH!!!!
Guard: What?
Impey: Hold on a sec maybe the bulb wan't adjusted...
Cardia: Uh
Impey: Don't worry, this engineer has one more idea up his sleeve! *picks up Cardia* RUN AWAAAAAYYY
Luckily he's a surprisingly fast runner for a nerd and they get away.
haha I love how oblivious and bluntly unimpressed Cardia is when Impey flirts.
Unfortunately she is also entirely oblivious when she gets separated from Impey and a "nice man" tells her to follow him to an alley way. He rips her shirt...and loses his hand, ha. And then along comes Victor Frankenstein to save her with SCIENCE!
Victor looks like a grown up Pidge from Voltron and is very tall and shy and I am into it :D
He gets distracted by the boobgem and then apologises (afaict he was more into the gem than the boobs). This is going to be a thing, isn't it.
AWWWW he gets out of breath running from the police but she's fine. He quietly realises it's the gem giving her limitless energy, but just says he's an out of shape academic. And then they're attacked by...a a guy in a plague doctor mask with a bee-wing cape??? Ooh, a Twilight soldier! But he's no match for Victor's flash bombs.
Victor is touched that she trusts him despite him being a wanted criminal. She tells him her entire life story because she has decided he is Good.
Victor: Cardia, I would like to examine your body.
Me: :D
Cardia: Why, do you want to see me naked?
Victor: AS A DOCTOR D:
HAAA and I get to choose *slams the "allow it" button*
Aw and then he gives a plaintive look and asks her to let him stay at Lupin's place. Cardia has to shout at Lupin and Impey to stop them threatening Victor for "kidnapping their precious treasure" but then they welcome him as a powerful ally.
Impey: Vicky! You can help Cardia and me consummate our love!
Cardia: I'm not consummating anything >:(
Victor: You have interesting friends.
Cardia: I. Have. Friends??!! o.O
Me: Yes you do ;_;
Lupin takes Cardia to a spare room he's prepared, saying the mansion's owner is eccentric and has no staff. She admires Lupin's pretty travel trunk in the corner: this was his room. He says she can have it, but then out of it bursts...a corgi! In a top hat! With a steam powered prosthetic leg! STEAMPUNK.
The dog Sisi demands pets and Cardia's terrified she'll hurt him but Lupin says he's a stray Impey found and Cardia's the first person he's liked. Let's hope he doesn't lick her face to wake her up in the morning...
Cardia used to have special sheets but now has to sleep in her clothes very still so she doesn't melt the pillow, and she ends up too tense to sleep (I feel you, Cardia)
She sees strange shadows in the hall then bumps into the "androgynous and beautiful" Count Saint-Germain, owner of the estate and "currently from France". He smiles warmly but has an air of coldness and mystery. His polite, gentle, but quietly smug tone reminds me a bit of Morally Ambiguous Scientist Vampire Sanan hmmmmm.
Chapter 2: The Strongest Stalker
OK THEN
Cardia's previous attempts to remove the boobgem caused unbearable pain.
After some SCIENCE Victor surmises Cardia's poison can melt literally anything because [it makes NO SENSE do not get me STARTED] but maybe her body has "antibodies" (to ACID. Sure, fine) He seems to have noticed something else he isn't saying.
Cardia's surprised to see Impey and Lupin join Saint-Germain in saying grace, they say they're not religious but are being polite guests. I'm having a little trouble parsing the significance of this in an anachronistic 19th century England written by modern Japanese people.
Saint-Germain says he's letting them all stay because it amuses him, what is up with this guy.
Victor quit being a royal alchemist for Secret Reasons, and now the government is paranoid he'll tell their SCIENCE SECRETS to foreigners.
Nobody suggests going back to Cardia's old mansion to get poison-proofed sheets or clues about Isaac. I guess because Twilight have it under surveillance?
Cardia has learned to feel anxious in Lowtown :(
They climb 40 feet of rickety stairs to a lonely tower.
Vuctor: Why...am I...the only one...out of breath :( Also what kind of doctor would practice up here?
Me: Van Helsing??
A grumpy middle aged woman who sadly has no sprite: One who's selective about her customers!
Me: :D!!
The doctor uses a stethoscope over a thin piece of Cardia's clothes, then frowns and says she's impossible to treat: she has no heartbeat. It's possible she has no heart at all, and it seems likely that the boobgem is the only thing keeping her alive.
I wonder if she was a full-on corpse and Isaac raised her from the dead.
And on that cheerful note, I shall end the post! This is still a lot of fun, even if my brain is warring between "SCIENCE :D!" and "that's not how science works >:("
