A digital painting of my cat Darcy, with chaotic splotches of colour that get more detailed around her eyes and more abstract in the background.

This still needs some work as a piece of art but was a successful proof of concept.

I assume a moderate knowledge of shaders. Image descriptions are sparse but I've tried to cover all the important concepts in the text.

finished image, looks like a watercolour of lilypads

This is mostly for my own future reference because I have already half forgotten how I did it, and I assume a moderate knowledge of shaders and the compositor. That said you could do a lot of this in a regular image editor, the main technique is just using paint textures from textures.com as masks for blurring and colour variation.

I'm not sure how many people who follow me would care, but I paid a little over a dollar for the lowest tier of the current Humble Bundle GAME DESIGN & ANIMATION BY PACKT and have definitely been getting my money's worth from "Blender 3D by Example".

alias_sqbr: (up and down)
I am teaching myself Blender for making game backgrounds and it is haaaaaaard. So hard. Like learning to draw all over again, or learning to use a new limb, all these new instincts I have to learn. Usually when I watch tutorials for things I spend a lot of time not really listening because most things are kind of obvious, but with this I appreciate everything being explained as slowly and carefully as possible(*). But every time I do another basic intro tutorial more of it is familiar. And I have started one of the actual game backgrounds! I have 3 walls and a sort of inset thing >.> (then I got stuck and decided to watch tutorials some more)

Luckily the plan is to paint over everything so it doesn't have to be pretty, just roughly the right colour and shape.

(*)And in that vein, am appreciating this course.
