alias_sqbr: And yet all I can think is this will make for a great dreamwidth entry. (dreamwidth)
The irc-like chat program Discord is the new shiny fannish social media. One advantage over irc is that it shows all messages posted, not just the ones you're there for, which makes for a better ongoing conversation. The advantage over tumblr etc is the ability to have private-ish, moderated, communal conversations. The advantage over message boards and mailing lists is that it's new and shiny.

I quite like it but it can be tricky finding servers (eg chat rooms) relevant to my interests. Currently I'm only a member of public ones, so I can share the links freely. Here are all the ones I know about.

Mostly for my own future reference. I'm making this public in case other people find it useful, but if you don't have a colonoscopy coming up you will probably find it TMI and boring.

Want to get it it into the world before Season 3 decisively josses it (or, more implausibly, confirms it, and makes me look brilliant) The first draft of this was written post season 1's cliffhanger but ended up working much better for season 2's.

Fandom: Voltron Legendary Defender
Rating: T for violence?
Pairings: Shiro/Allura(/Keith??), Hagar/Zarkon, weird implied Shiro/Hagar sort of
Content: Sort of mpreg-ish, trans issues, body horror, PTSD, death, unreality

The weird little bit I did end up writing )
Summary and worldbuilding )

SO YES. I ran out of momentum for writing the fic, and it would be hard to avoid unfortunate implications if I ever did. But I wanted to get what I have out into the world before Season 3 comes out.

If you are reading this and feel inspired by any of it knock yourself out. Give me some credit if you use a big chunk of them, but don't feel obliged to stick to my plan, such as it is.

[twitter.com profile] warpwind asked me on twitter on behalf of asinglestarwar and it was easier to compile them here. Extra recs very much appreciated!

Am still feeling depressed, but getting by. My apologies to the multiple people who subscribed to me recently, you all seem very cool but unfortunately my brain's response to "do I want to see the kinds of posts this person makes on my reading list?" was "Who knows who cares EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE" which was not very helpful.

I have recently made this zuchinni slice minus cheese and oil plus extra egg and some savoury flavours (garlic oil, msg, pepper, salt) a few times using the very convenient zucchini spaghetti from WA Fresh and it is great, though removing most of the fat makes it a trifle rubbery and in need of extra toasting. Going to try it minus bacon next because I don't like eating pork if I can help it.

Though as much as WA Fresh has a nice variety of produce, as I discovered last night they are lacking one very important staple: a "cancel order" button. I had to make a panicked email at 10pm after accidentally ordering twice, it all turned out ok but was rather more stress than I like.

[tumblr.com profile] hoidn has been posting lots of cute Niles/Daphne gif sets on tumblr and it reminded me how much I enjoyed Frasier but found it frustrating that I was stuck with whatever episodes I happened to catch on tv. So I decided to watch it in order! Not all 220 episodes or whatever just the ones that sound good/shippy. And then Cam was inspired to maybe do the same, so I'm going to write up the episodes as I watch them to help him decide what to watch himself (unless he just watches them all, he is more of a completionist than me)

So, to the extent my opinion on a show explicitly about the Black American experience matters: I liked it!

Here's a review I read by an Actual Black American which criticises it for being designed to make white allies feel good about ourselves. Even I noticed it was way too easy on the Nice White Dude and looking back I guess I assumed an implicit criticism of him that was never actually said, and may have been entirely in my head.

Mush up Pirates of the Carribean with the original Guardians of the Galaxy in a blender with some cheese, and give it a flouro 80s candy coating, and you get this movie. If you can turn your brain off and enjoy the silliness and explosions it's pretty fun. Not very deep and mostly about A Man And His Father Issues but gives the female characters more to do than the last movie. The perfunctory attempts at a Peter/Gamora romance are ineffective but also pretty easy to ignore (I usually like that kind of pairing but this one doesn't work for me) and the Gamora and Nebula sister relationship gets the exploration that was missing from the original. I feel like they sanded off the unhealthiness of Peter and Yondu's relationship for convenience, but otherwise enjoyed the story, which is all about family. Mantis's character felt like a bit of an Asian stereotype but her arc was ok. None of the female characters get sexualised very much and Chris Pratt is super pretty.

So! I have been feeling a bit down recently for reasons I'm not going to go into in this post (I have realised that doing so makes me reluctant to read the comments, rather defeating the purpose) and would like some happy, positive human interaction.

So! If the mood strikes you, please comment with happy links, books/movies etc you've enjoyed recently, random cheerful comments about what you've been up to etc. No sympathy comments, I am not in the mood right now.

And to return the favour, here is my swancon costume as well as a mask I made. Also, here is some cute happy fixit art for Rogue One.

Also, while I'm here: hello to everyone who's been coming over to dreamwidth from livejournal!

Sorry to the many people I did not speak to/was vague at, I was EXTRA SPECIALLY sleepy this weekend, on the plus side all the resting I had to do means I don't actually feel that bad now.

Between all the resting I still had a pretty good time! The Metro's accessibility issues weren't as bad as I thought they'd be, and having Cam to drive me around meant the lack of nearby restaurants wasn't too big of an issue for me personally. Didn't make many panels but the ones I went to were fun, and next years con looks pretty promising. The only guest I really talked to was Joyce Chng/[twitter.com profile] jolantru but she was very nice and had interesting things to say.

I wore a they/them pronoun sticker and mentioned my genderfluidness when it was relevant, and got no negative pushback whatsoever. I think partly because a sticker on the bottom of a lanyard on a wheelchair using short person with boobs is not going to be noticed by most people, but I'm still counting it as a win.

I didn't take a lot of notes but what I have is under the cut. The con used the Grenadine event management system for the first time, it worked pretty well from my end and is reminding me of what I did.

The fact that I am reviewing three books from this series after starting the first one a few days ago may give some idea of how much I've enjoyed them!

The flippant summary is that they're slightly grimdark Terry Pratchett. They also reminded me of the Laundry Files, with the Strange Magics And Ancient Gods mixed up with corporations and law/analysis instead of public service and pure maths/physics.

Also: they're on sale on the Kindle and Apple stores (and maybe other places?) right now after being nominated for a Hugo! There's a bundle sale...somewhere, apparently, but I only found out after buying them individually, oops.

A link roundup if you haven't heard about it.

Anyway: I'm going to keep crossposting for now, but I get why some people aren't.

To tide myself over until the final episode of The Adventure Zone I paid $5 to gain access to the subscriber extras on Maximum Fun. There's 5 Adventure Zone episodes: a prequel where the gang meets, a stand alone Beach Episode, and three episodes of "The Adventure Zone: Nights", a separate campaign run by Travis.

The first two weren't super exciting but cute. The Adventure Zone: Nights took a while to grow on me, especially since Travis turned out to be the kind of nerdy dude who starts with FIFTEEN MINUTES of worldbuilding and then fills his dungeons with mazes full of logic puzzles, not the recipe for a compelling podcast. Also I'm attached to the regular characters, and three episodes isn't enough for these new ones to gain much depth, though it was interesting seeing everyone play someone different. (Griffin is a nebbishy warlock bartender, Justin a quietly badass female monk, and Clint a loudmouth bard)

But then in the final episode...Lin Manuel Miranda shows up? As a bard who sings his way out of trouble??

So yeah, if you want to hear Lin Manuel Miranda use an original battle rap to lower the self esteem of a robot, consider subscribing to Maximum Fun! The episode is still largely kinda dry, listening to someone roleplay methodically destroying 50 barrels to find the one with the gem they need is boring even if the ropleplayer is a Tony award winner. But I feel like I got my $5 worth overall, especially when you consider the 50+ free Adventure Zone episodes I've listened to and enjoyed. I've cancelled my subscription again, but will happily pay another $5 if they add more bonus content I'm interested in.

Also note: the third TAZ:N episode is labelled "TAZ:N 2" for some reason. Read the summaries carefully.

My tl;dr review: this is a profoundly mediocre game that I mostly enjoyed. I wanted a mostly upbeat game where I got to play a queer woman exploring planets, shooting bad guys, and and kissing cute girl aliens, and that's what I got. If there were any other games that let me do all that I might have been more dissappointed with the quality of the experience, but there basically aren't, so. Also I had a health downswing so bad I'd normally have to lie in bed playing hidden object games for a week, which made the drawn out, simplistic nature of the game kind of a plus. My enjoyment fell pretty drastically once I got better haha.

Many people have gone into the game's flaws, and they are all absolutely correct! So I'm going to use them to structure my review. The reasons these flaws didn't ruin the game for me are all very subjective, this is definitely not a game for everyone.

I'm assuming you've played a Mass Effect game before, if you haven't: play one of the other Mass Effect games instead. They are all much better games. This game is for people who have run out of good Mass Effect games and want more badly enough to lower their standards.
