First: A photo of Marijn!

To my susprise I find myself wanting to play a douchey pro templar human man. I looked up the approvals, and seems like Iron Bull and Cassandra would be ok with that as long as I wasn't douchey to them (Dorian will hate me like burning, but since we'd be distant cousins that's kind of funny)

Of course it means I'm wasting a human/elf on non racegated LIs.

Not that I am likely to play all of these, but some possibilities for future playthroughs that cover all the LIs:

sensible vaguely pro mage dwarf woman: Blackwall (done)

Pro templar douche human man: Cassandra or The Iron Bull
Pro templar deeply religious human woman: Cullen, Josephine, or The Iron Bull
Female Qunari who finds this all deeply irritating: Sera
Smug elf mage woman: Solas
Nice qunari man??: Dorian, Josephine
Pragmatically selfish dwarf dude: Cassandra or The Iron Bull

The more I think about Marijn's background the more I think she was some incredibly minor clerk or something in the carta, and isn't even that good at fighting. She's some minor nobody who was in the right place at the right time and did her best to roll with the situation. I also think she maybe isn't a dwarf-like-Varric at all, but a human with dwarfism who joined the carta because regaular human society saw her as a dwarf and the Carta accepted her as long as she did her job and didn't mind being treated like an outsider. I never felt much of a connection with the dwarf stuff that came up, and nothing in the game really contradicted this headcanon asides from some brief references to her not dreaming/being connected to the Fade. Maybe she was adopted by dwarves? This is all a bit Mary Sue-ish but that goes with the territory :D

...actually, a dwarf who was adopted by humans fits my feelings about her better. HMM. Ohhh maybe she's a half dwarf who was raised by the human side of the family. I like the idea of her being semi-disabled and physically weak, but I guess she could be a dwarf-like-Varric and have something else. Maybe she wasn't isn't sure WHAT kind of dwarf she is. I guess she could have been left at an orphanage? MAYBE HER MOTHER WAS AN ELF. *pokes at things trying to find something that feels right*

I'm fascinated by the idea of a human with dwarfism living as a dwarf, or an adopted dwarf, and variations thereof!

Still playing Dragon Age: Origins with my first character, and giving thought to further playthroughs. There must be some mathematically correct method of getting the most out of each run (combinations of class, race and combat specialisations, plus plot choices and romances) but they have to gel into a character that makes sense and is fun to play. How do other people go about deciding?

After honest-and-kind-female-commoner-dwarf-two-handed-warrior-romancing-Alistair, I suppose I should go for some sort of dickhead male elf mage for maximum differentiation, but I'm more inclined to try a noble human female dual-wielding rogue or a noble dwarf female archer rogue first. As for planning love interests, I think it's difficult to know who someone would be into until I've played the character long enough to know them better!
