How to Train Your Dragon 2
Jun. 15th, 2014 04:29 pmOverall: Great. As good if not better than the original.
Well plotted, interesting characters, funny, thrilling, cohesive, and OMG THE DRAGONS SO COOL DRAGONSDRAGONS.
The one negative for me was that the ONE non-white character is the bad guy, who without getting into spoilers is SUCH a generic foreign "barbarian" type. Like...he's asian with dreadlocks and sneaky and brutish. Ugh.
On the plus side they seem to have learned from Disney that female characters can have arcs that AREN'T JUST ABOUT BEING THE LOVE INTEREST OMG. Specifically: Astrid, while definitely not central, gets to be cool in ways that aren't entirely about making Hiccup look cool and there is no annoying relationship drama. And Hiccup and the other disabled characters are just characters, their disability comes up every now and then as relevant but it's no big deal. Which is just SO AMAZING. It shouldn't be but it is. If you want to know how to include disabled characters in your fiction watch this movie. Or if you just like AMAZING MOVIES ABOUT DRAGONS.
