I'm enjoying it much more since I learned to tell the difference between class quests (the plot arc for my character) and location quests (self contained stories designed to be playable at any time by multiple classes) They have the same colour icon but the location quests are entirely skippable and mostly kinda boring/depressing. Skipping them has vastly sped up the pace. I'm now a bit under-levelled but that just makes the combat sometimes very slightly challenging. If I do end up doing some location quests to level up I'll at least not be wondering how this random digression is supposed to fit into the overall narrative, because it isn't.

And now that I've seen more of the plot, and have realised which parts of the earlier plot were unrelated sidequests, I'm quite getting into it!

Here's my character Labriar in her current state:

No Spoilers, just a picture
My Star Wars characters, a tall pale woman with neat stubble, facial scars, and cybernetic implants on her temples, with dark broiwn hair in a ponytail. She's wearing a long black jacket over tight dark clothing with a coppery breastplate thing.

It took me quite a while to find an outfit that was even remotely androgynous and not just shrink-wrapped to her dramatic curves. I mean to try poking at her features and colouring a little more once I have more premium currency (I spent it all unlocking hairstyles etc in advance and refuse to spend more than my subscription if I can possibly help it).

And now...SPOILERS!!!!!

I've now met two more companions, including the male love interest Vector, and I ADORE him. He's PART OF AN INSECT HIVE MIND and SO WEIRD and I am SO INTO IT.

He's not an insect himself, he was born human and looks like a human with all-black eyes. He was the Empire's ambassador to Alderaan, which turns out to have native alien sentient bug colonies, and the colony decided they'd rather he be be the ambassador to them and absorbed his consciousness into their collective. He says that while it was a "surprise" he's very happy to be part of the hive, but he would, wouldn't he? The hive let him keep some personal autonomy and personality to be a better emissary but he is definitely not a regular human any more.

Despite their significant differences in philosophy he has a kinda Solas-y vibe: slightly mystic, very polite, and a tendency to calmly say creepily poetic things in a soft welsh accent. He's by far the most light-side-friendly of my companions so far, so bringing him along means I actually get approval for trying to be polite and non-violent, which is nice. Unlike Solas he comes across as a little young, and quite earnest, he's only 26 and still adjusting to being around humans again. I'm guessing Labriar is like...22? 25?

He just had a conversation with my PC Labriar that basically went:
Vector: When I was a diplomat, I was good at reading people, but it has become more challenging since I was Joined with the Hive. Is our relationship becoming... inappropriate?
Labriar: As your commanding officer, what I say goes, and I say we're good :)
Vector: I am glad to hear it. And how do you feel about me?
Labriar: Come to my cabin and I'll show you ;)
Vector: I look forward to it :)

So not exactly the height of romance thus far but they do get along pretty well, and she finds his Weird Bug Thing fascinating even while wanting to help him be a bit less brainwashed. And yeah, power dynamic consent issues, especially since he kinda seems to view Labriar as the replacement for the Hive Queen he would previously obey without question but... he's into it! It's fine! >.>

Labriar has even stopped flirting quite so aggressively with everything that moves, though I did try once with an especially cute blue dude in front of Vector, just to see if he'd care, and didn't lose any approval. Meanwhile generally lost approval or at least get snarky remarks every time Labriar flirted (or "it's not technically flirting because she's a girl") with someone else in front of Kaliyo. IF YOU LIKED IT YOU SHOULDA PUT A RING ON IT.

And now, the plot!

I think I need to start from the beginning.

So! Labriar starts the game as a recent graduate from Agent training. Her boss is Keeper, who is generally coldly pragmatic but does show little bits of warmth when she does well, or when he's trying to protect his section from the absolutely terrifying Sith in charge of Intelligence. In general, non-Sith Imperials seem to see the Sith who run the Empire as dangerous, powerful forces of nature interfering with the practical work of being fascist oppressors. Even the most loyal Imperialists tend to mutter amongst themselves bitterly. It's like the Imperials seem to view Vader and Kylo Ren in the movies, except in the old Empire the Sith are more numerous, organised, and politically motivated.

Labriar also befriends (and did her utmost to flirt with) Seeker 2, a pretty, genetically engineered analyst who helps plan missions. Seeker 2 was shippily friendly back but always focussed on the mission, and she is just is as pragmatically amoral in defence of the empire as Keeper.

A bunch of missions involved thwarting an anti-Empire (but not necessarily pro-Republic) terrorist organisation, which united various factions with their own motivations for hating the Empire as part of some larger goal. The conflict between terrorists killing civilians to fight for freedom vs agents of a fascist government trying to protect the citizens but also their own evil empire was sometimes mildly interesting.

Eventually, Labriar was promoted, and thus "honoured" by losing her name and identity to her new role: Cipher 9

A mission involves going to an Imperial prison to ask for advice from "Seeker X", who was part of the same genetic engineering program as Seeker 2 but eventually got so paranoid and violent he was locked up. He is bitter about a chip in his brain making escape impossible, but offers advice on the mission and gives Labriar a cybernetic implant to get past the bad guys. It turns out he set things up to aid his own escape, and Labriar ends up killing him.

Then she went to Alderaan and met Vector, and also an obnoxious pro-Empire Alderaanian noble house. Vector is sent by the Hive to help, but once they've routed the anti-Imperial conspiracy says the Hive now claims the whole household and lands to be joined to the Hive. I was all "On the one hand, that's super evil and awful. But on the other hand, saying no might make Vector mad at me ;_;" but luckily he forgave her and said his ultimate loyalty is to the Empire. Yay?

It's interesting seeing Alderaan in this era. The Alderaan noble houses all seem to be involved in petty, cut-throat power-plays, and invested in being all snooty and aristocratic despite living in a scifi world, a bit like Barrayar. Also there's nerfs (big bisony things) wandering the pretty green countryside. I haven't interacted with house Organa directly asides from killing some guards while passing through Organa territory.

It turns out the anti-Empire terrorists are being funded by the Sith in charge of Imperial intelligence as part of a scheme to increase his own power. Which was exactly the kind of boring twist I was expecting. Seeker 2 says to let him murder a few thousand people while she sets things up to kill him, while Vector and the light side say to stop him immediately even though he'll get away. Sorry Seeker 2, you're cute, but not that cute.

After this, Keeper is promoted to head of Intelligence, while Seeker 2 becomes the new Keeper. She has a conversation about her new responsibilities as Labriar's boss that felt like a trimmed down "Our fledgling romance is no longer within regs".

And then, Labriar is sent to the Republic to be a double agent!!

"Ooh," thinks I, "a chance for her to decide she actually supports the republic and switch sides!" She meets a bunch of Republic intelligence officers, who asides from one skeezy jerk are mostly pretty earnest and nice and buy her story of being a sincere convert who wants to work as a double agent for the Republic within the Empire.

All the Imperials have UK accents, mostly snooty English, and the female Imperial Agent is voiced by the actor who played female Hawke in Dragon Age 2. The Republicans all have American accents (pun intended). Labriar sometimes puts on a mediocre American accent when trying to pass as Not An Imperial Spy.

Her new Republic boss, a manly, grizzled, fatherly figure, takes her aside to discuss her new role. He's a little cautious but I felt like she was winning him over.

And then he apologises, and USES HER TRIGGER WORD. TO THE BRAINWASHING SHE HAS. TO COMMAND HER TO NEVER HURT HIS TEAM.

Labriar is NOT HAPPY but unable to tell anyone. The option comes up in the dialogue wheel but whenever I pick it her actual dialogue just changes the subject D: None of the companions seem aware of it, which requires some mental rewriting of scenes where they are visibly present while she's being controlled etc. The only one Labriar would trust to know is Vector, the others would take advantage immediately.

And then! She hears a voice in her head, discussing how to escape the brainwashing!!

Me: MALE HAWKE??? IS THIS SOME SORT OF ALTERNATE GENDERED HIDDEN PERSONALITY??

But no, it's Watcher X, who I hadn't noticed has the same voice actor as Male Hawke because they look so different. He claims to not know how he ended up inside her head but thinks it might be part of the implants he installed, or just her going a little mad. Hmm.

Every now and then her contacts in the Republic use her code word ("Onamatophobia", which I guess means...the sound of fear?) to make absolutely sure she does something important, and while the commands have all been reasonable so far it is enjoyably uncomfortable. At one point you have the choice to save someone too injured to use the word again, or let him die, and after she saves him he says he trusts her now. We'll see how that works out for you, buddy.

There's the chance to think the Republic installed the brainwashing, but I didn't bother, it was CLEARLY the Empire.

Then there was a mission to investigate experiments being done on rakghouls, which are basically zombies (luckily they don't set off my zombie squick too much). You meet a middle aged Empire scientist, Dr Lokin, who is very cheerful and polite but CLEARLY up to something. Just as I was finishing up the quest (the main antagonist was a rogue jedi who had set up her own cult of incredibly stereotypical Noble Warrior Race aliens, which...sigh. Ok, Bioware) a rakghoul comes out of nowhere and murders one of the aliens. And then...turns into a mostly naked and surprisingly buff Dr Lokin.

Dr Lokin: Ah, I find being a rakghoul invigorating! Just a little hobby project of mine ^_^
Me: Ok you are creepy as hell but since this quest is over I'll never see you again so sure, whatever.
Dr Lokin: You know my secret. But I also know you are not here on official business. So either we both tell our superiors...or you find space for me on your ship. I can be quite useful :)
Me: NO
Labriar: NO
Game: Dr Lokin has joined you as a companion
Me: AAAAAH

He is so creepy! But so friendly! Just hanging out by the ship's bacta tank cheerfully doing research into something I probably don't want to know about. I mean, I think it's great, but also, nng.

Meanwhile, since I stopped taking Kaliyo along on missions with me she's not progressing in approval quite as quickly but it's still chugging along. Her last personal mission was basically:

Kaliyo: So a bunch of my former partners and exes have randomly decided to try to kill me and I need your help tracking them down and killing them first.
Labriar: Why do they want to kill you?
Kaliyo: Oh you know, I betrayed them, stole their money, left them for dead...whatever. They need to learn to let go of the past!

And so I went and helped her kill them! Labriar tried to negotiate peaceful resolutions, much to Kaliyo's annoyance, and with very limited success. One girl was so her ex, she even said Kaliyo "seduced her away from her father". I guess it was a platonic seduction. Sure.

Kaliyo is still pretty fun though. Afterwards she cheerfully admitted that she might end up betraying Labriar one day but for now she's having fun, and she had fun with the others while things lasted. It's interesting seeing a character who reminds me of Morrigan, Jack, and Sera but doesn't have any obvious angst. If she has some she is hiding it well!

She just had a scene where she talked about having run with some anarchist terrorists for a while, and while she was mostly in it for the wanton destruction does feel a little weird working for dictators now. Like, she's mostly amoral but does have some vague wisps of empathy and ethics underneath it all, and seems genuinely fond of Labriar in her way. Afterwards Dr Lokin cheerfully tells Labriar he's noticed Kaliyo sending messages on a coded frequency, if she's actually working with the Republic or something that would be interesting!! It's plausibly just to pirates or whatever though.

Watcher X helps Labriar track down information about her brainwashing: it was installed by (the original) Keeper after Labriar helped take down the terrorist sith lord, because even though she was helping the Empire she still attacked a sith lord and that makes the other sith uncomfortable.

Watcher X is a bit unhinged about it under his dispassionate 'rationality'. But thus far she's stayed calm, and also managed to lie her way into getting away with her unsanctioned investigations. The 'cure' is just to brainwash herself again and set a different control word noone knows, which makes me wonder if Watcher X plans to brainwash her himself.

I decided to do an Alderaan side-quest about rescuing a bunch of people who'd been captured by a different hive of the sort that assimilated Vector, since that seemed interesting. He liked Labriar respecting the choice of the one human who'd already been assimilated and said she was much happier now, but did not approve of Labriar telling the girl's father that his daughter had been irreversibly brainwashed and her original personality was gone. SORRY VECTOR. BUT THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED.

The way the Joined girl talked about how much more peaceful the Hive is than humans was darkly funny given that Labriar had just fought her way through hordes of armed bugs and joined humans to rescue some hapless miners. But GOD I could do with less "creepy/incomprehensible/mentally simple aliens as oppressed indigenous inhabitants colonised by humans" plots. I know that's how Star Wars has always worked but that doesn't mean I like it!

Also I went to the ice planet of Hoth and for some reason a bunch of agents there have Australian accents which was amusingly odd. You can apparently tame a taun-taun to ride and it looks troublesome but also I want one. I got a big toothy beast mount as part of a subscriber thing running right now and am quite fond of it and I made it a little habitat in my base but still. TAUN-TAUN.

Brainwashing!! That is a neat element – messing with your dialogue wheel and all.

Labriar has a very pensive expression ... like maybe she is questioning some of her life choices XD

Ohh, this sounds so interestingly plotted! And alien bug hiveminds! :D

Vector sounds very interesting but,

Kaliyo: Oh you know, I betrayed them, stole their money, left them for dead...whatever. They need to learn to let go of the past!

I officially love her, she is amazing and I see nothing wrong with her reasoning! :P It's also so nice how she's just like, "I might betray you too, but for now friends! (try not to hold onto the past so hard when it's your turn?)"

It also seems Very Bioware that your romantic choices are between the brainwashed and pleasant-sounding guy who is part of the hivemind that just makes a habit of taking over people's free will, and cheerfully amoral individualist betrayer with doubts about the fascism, but probably not that many doubts.

Important question: what is your big toothy beast mount? :D :D :D
