A heap of video game reviews
Apr. 5th, 2022 08:36 pmUkrainian Bundle: Metamorphabet, Windosill, Resynth, Changeling, Landlord of the Woods
Other: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Doreamon: Story of Seasons, Deltarune Chapter 2, Magical Otoge Iris
Ukrainian Bundle:
These first two were created by vectorpark who also have some interesting looking free games I mean to check out now.
Metamorphabet a playful, interactive alphabet. You click on the letters and silly stuff happens with words starting with that letter. Slight, but delightful.
Windosill a point-click-and-drag puzzle-toy, in which you guide a toy car through 10 miniature worlds. Some of the puzzles were a bit fiddly/unintuitive, but it was otherwise fun and inventively surreal.
Resynth: a simple block pushing puzzle game, with an interesting music/rhythm gimmick. I don't like block pushing puzzles so didn't get far, but had fun for a puzzle or two.
Changeling: romance visual novel about a girl returning to the little town where she grew up and discovering Strange Mysteries and Cute Monster Boys. I liked a lot about this game but it is very Heterosexual Teen Supernatural Romance, eg the heroine is feisty and stubborn but constantly gets herself into trouble she needs to be rescued from, and it dragged out the plot by having the characters refuse to tell each other anything FOR NO GOOD REASON a LOT. But I did like the number of sweet, shy monster boys, I romanced the emo vampire Elliot and he was pretty great even if the game overall annoyed me.
Landlord of the Woods An odd, lightly morbid little point and click puzzle game which I was enjoying well enough until a puzzle ended up in an unwinnable state and I couldn't reset it >:(
Other games:
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: A 19 year old Bioware Star Wars RPG. I played it a while ago but got frustrated by the old school combat, I've been playing again with cheats and it's much more fun! You can see the seeds of a lot of ideas that got further explored in Mass Effect and Dragon Age, like Evil Hogwarts (in this case, a Sith academy) and an oppressed undercity. Unfortunately there's also a LOT of ham-fisted moral choices about whether or not to commit genocide or engage in slavery, just against wookies and sand-people rather than elves. Also the graphics are Very Dated, and the writing has it's moments but is a little thin. Still, I get to wield a lightsaber and flirt with a lesbian catgirl, so it's not all bad. I haven't finished it yet but have been spoiled for the Big Twist and am curious to see it all play out!
Doreamon: Story of Seasons: A Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon farming sim game where the kids from the Japanese kid's show Doraemon end up in a mysterious village and work for their keep while they try and figure out how to get home. I have very mixed feelings! Good: gorgeous watercolour style art, fun farming/crafting etc mechanics, lots to do, ongoing plot about a group of kids solving mysteries which is a change from the usual. Cons: so unplayable on keyboard I use a controller, cliched and boring plots/characters, repeatedly defends child labour. ...wait I already reviewed this! WELL HAVE ANOTHER REVIEW. I'm still not finished, I'm getting kind of bored but still play it every now and then when I feel like smashing rocks.
Deltarune Chapter 2: A pixelated RPG from the creator of Undertale, about a moody non-binary teen from a world of friendly monsters ending up in a strange Dark World with their classmates. I watched a Let's Play of both chapters, since I'd forgotten the events of Chapter 1, and enjoyed all of it! It's funny and heartwarming and gets you in the feels when you don't expect it. I find bullet hells too stressful to play, but the plot and characters are very charming and I'm curious to see where it's going. So far only 2 of the planned 7 chapters are out but they're worth checking out. This Let's Player, Materwelonz, is pretty good, very engaged and good natured and endearingly squeeful about the f/f ship. I managed to get like one video into the Bad Route before wimping out haha but it sounds intense.
Magical Otoge Iris: A romantic visual novel about a young woman in a fantasy setting dealing with various magical mysteries and stuff. Mildly interesting but it wasn't really grabbing me and some plot point I can't remember rubbed me the wrong way.
