phlebasphoenician: First Line Game: List the first lines of the last ten (10) stories you published. Look to see any patterns you notice yourself, and see if anyone else notices any. Then tag some friends.
Not tagging anyone but this was fun so you should all do it! I wasn't sure what counted as 'first line' since the other meme entries didn't always just use the first sentence, so I used the first paragraph.
1. Sakie spent a lot of time thinking about kissing Tetsuo. (Succubus-san Wants To Experiment)
2. Shi Qingxuan smiled cheerfully over the bubbling pot of soup. "Hi," they said, with a friendly tilt of their head in lieu of a wave. "I don't think I've seen you around the temple before." (Into Darker Water)
3. Whatever everyone might assume, it was not actually true that Yukimura had never been kissed. (Dango over Flowers)
4. Sakie was having a very strange dream. It started with Takahashi-sensei ringing her up, which was promising, but then he just talked about boring school stuff and the weather. She was having trouble thinking straight, and had a little trouble following what he was saying- something about snow and asking if she had much food in the house? (Satou Sakie Gets A Hug)
5. For a while everyone just stared at the letter in silence. It had been addressed to all the key employees of the Inquisition, and arrived attached to a large box filled with strange devices. They looked a bit like small crossbows, but instead of arrows were loaded with round colourful balls. (The Inquisition Versus Paint-ball)
6. For a moment, it had seemed like everything would be alright. (The Persistence of Memory)
7. For a moment Jeremy thought he was looking at himself. He rubbed his eyes and stared at the huddled figure sleeping in the seat next to him. All he could make out was pale features hidden under shaggy green hair, and a thick blanket pulled roughly over dark clothing. It was like looking at a doppelgänger. (https://archiveofourown.org/works/20859026)
8. There was a man on the path. He looked to be a bit older than Chizuru, but was moderately handsome, with tanned skin and wavy hair, and she was quite sure she'd never seen him before in her life. (A Braid of Bamboo and Steel)
9. Souji was being too hard on the pages. (Gifts)
10. Chizuru had spent years trying desperately to avoid this situation, and yet here she was, at the mercy of Kazama Chikage. He'd pushed her against the wall and was kissing his way down her neck, each touch of his lips making the skin beneath them shiver. His hand on her side and the inescapable pressure of his hips was the only thing stopping her from sliding to the floor. (Wedding Night)
You know, when I was writing "Succubus-san Wants To Experiment" I felt bad that the original first line was too similar to the one for "Dango over Flowers", so I changed it. But just look at the opening lines for fics 5-7. I'm listing these in reverse chronological order, too, so I wrote them one after the other /o\ And yes, I do have to go back over my first drafts trying to cut down on the number of "for a moment"s within the rest of the story, too.
Part of me felt like self consciously pointing out that "Succubus-san Wants To Experiment" is much less horny than you might expect, but "Wedding Night" is exactly as horny as you would expect, so. Maybe I should just embrace myshame perfectly acceptable creative self expression.
Anyway. Repeated themes are kissing, people meeting for the first time, people being sleepy (the viewpoint character at the start of The Persistence of Memory is sad about someone being unconscious), and - *sigh* - things happening for just a moment. Also I have yet to manage to write any fics that aren't third person limited past tense.
