And that's the end! It was pretty good! The last week is a bit repetitive and boring, and the ending is kind of abrupt, but overall the game tells a fairly coherent and satisfying story and I'm really glad I played it.
Things mostly went pretty well despite my slapdash approach, but there was a bunch of points at the end where the game was all "Well I guess you'll never know the answer to THAT mystery". So now I'm going to poke a guide and make a character who fails less stats checks and learns more secrets!
Time to meet the ambassadors! And WIN BACK MY MAN.
Ooh and Lian gets to choose if she hosts a big ball! SURE LET'S TRY.
Awwww a really sweet letter from Emmett's sister welcoming her to the family and saying she hopes Lian can make Emmett aware of his own worth. I'M TRYING, LADY.
(Some people might complain about being expected to be this dude's therapist but I love helping love interests with self esteem issues)
It won't let me spend time with Emmett, this better be temporary >:(
Aw sweet being friends with Cordelia means she was willing to use her expertise in poisons (?!) to help Lian identify the poison. It's from Skalt HMM!
Time to meet the ambassadors! These are my initial impressions:
Arland: Lord Chancellor Torren Han-Lisle: Gruffly sneaky.
Corval: Lady Nasira: Pragmatically assessing merchant.
Hise: Captain Nike: Flashy but smarter than she looks
Skalt: Speaker Andel. Ana's fey priest uncle.
Jiyel: Minister Cato: Snooty toady.
Revaire: Marchioness Iris Patricia Valentine: paranoid and reserved
Wellin: Viscount Herschel: Chivalrous fop
Most of the conversations are pretty boring, but Captain Nike asked Lian's advice on a budding romance between two male delegates from Corval and Hise, which was cute. And it's nice that the game managed to fit in a tiny bit of canon m/m.
There's a conversation supposedly involving Woodly I am 90% sure was intended to involve a nameless delegate, I really don't see him kvetching with a bunch of no-names about how he has no control over his life.
Emmet takes Lian aside, says he's missed her more than he can bear, and proposes! It was cute, but a bit codependently YOU ARE MY WORLD in a way which makes me think I'm heading towards a Normal Emmet End and missed out on the Good Emmet End. Still, as slightly dysfunctional relationships go, subby dude worshipping woman he sees as a goddess is not the worst option.
Aw, Lian has explicitly failed at figuring out who was trying to poison her. I thought she would, but I wanted to give it a shot!
"This is where the cameo scene will be~ I am still waiting on the last character description so if that is you please send it to me~ Thanks! <3"
Planning the ball involved a lot of budgeting decisions I was probably too cautious about, especially given my reluctance to spend Isle funds on Lian's appearance. That's embezzlement, game!
Just as the ball is about to start, a creepy guy in a hood corners Lian alone and says him killing her is her Destiny. And now my options are fight him off, scream, or seduce him. Ahahaaaa maybe shoulda worked on my self defence and/or charm, huh...
haa pretty sure that'd have been a bad end if I wasn't in story mode. But instead he just...randomly trips. SURE. He kills himself before he can be questioned, saying Change Is Coming.
Head butler: Well that's him dealt with. On with the ball!
Haha oops yeah I screwed that up Lian was apparently a terrible host. But nothing bad actually happened asides from her apparently losing some general approval, she got to hang out with her friends and had a romantic dance with Emmett who apparently doesn't mind that she's a terrible dancer.
I like how the writing takes into account Lian having a logical and unromantic personality but still lets her have cute romantic moments. I'm curious to see what a romance is like with someone more sentimental.
Week Seven
The point of this week is for the delegates and ambassadors to organise alliances and treaties, but everyone keeps bickering. The game asks if I want to focus on my goals or larger things (like world peace. Or world war!), and I'm not sure Lian has any personal goals now that's she's failed to identify her assassin(s) and gotten approval to marry Emmett. So let's try and create world peace! There's no way that can go wrong!!
Lian tries to impress everyone with her knowledge and just barely succeeds, with the game pointing out that only knowing about academia and plants might impress nerds and Emmett but is not so useful in a treaty negotiation >.>
The game crashed due to "iscorvalpeace" not being defined /o\ I want to know the answer to that too, game! *clicks ignore and hopes the game is not going to be too broken going forward*
Haha oh god Lian is SO BAD AT THIS, every time she tries to encourage peace it just causes more arguments /o\ I decided to roll back and have her just observe this part of the negotiations, because honestly what business DOES a minor noblewoman from Jiyel have butting into discussions between Corval and Hise?
And her insight is so low she has no idea, in the end, how things will play out.
Honestly this week has been pretty boring so far. Neither I nor Lian care that much about political negotiations. Like, peace is good and all, but there's just so many decisions and we're just so bad at it!
Lian successfully encouraged Skalt and Wellin to be more peaceful! She actually has some sway with people from those countries after all. And then the game crashed due the lack of "wellinabilearnfromeachother". Initialise your variables, people!
Aw when Lian suggests the countries share medical knowledge, Lyon and Emmet pipe up with their own expertise in support.
"It's hard to believe the week of negotiations isn't even halfway over"
Oh god it's not? D: This is getting very boring and repetitive. It'll be less annoying on a replay but they really didn't go to much effort to make the negotiation text interesting or unique, and there's just enough going on I can't totally zone out.
Haa let's see if she and Emmet can encourage Arland and Jiyel not to murder each other. They are sure...all pretty racist towards each other, moving to Arland is going to be a Fun Time for Lian I'm sure. Avalie watches but doesn't get closely involved.
With the other countries already paired up, that leaves Revaire alone, I wonder if that'll be an internal conflict between their two factions.
Gisette shows up in Lian's room looking like she is considering an alliance and sharing of information, but takes one look at Lian's confused expression and is like "Ah never mind, you are clearly a useless dumbass. Bye ^_^"
"revaireambirisokay" is the missing variable this time. Lian and I both have no idea what's going on. Oh well!
Do I want to invite Ria to come to Arland with me?? It would be nice to have a friendly face but she's probably happier here. Let's be penpals!
Ooh the day the engagements are announced. There better not be any more surprise breakups, game!
Game: You have some free time for the first time this week
Me: Huh. What is there even to do? Hang with Emmet, I guess??
Game: Placeholder
Me: Never mind then!
Penelope: What am I going to do when you're no longer just down the hall? ;_;
Lian: You'll just have to visit me a lot. If your parents refuse, I can probably arrange a kidnapping.
Me: COME JOIN THE NICE PEOPLE HAREM IN ARLAND
Oh wow. Cordelia comes to say goodbye and says she's entering a political marriage with Penelope's gay brother Lisle.
It's a really sweet goodbye. FINE. YOU CAN HAVE PENELOPE. TREAT HER NICE.
Looks like Lian made a small positive effect on peace, and got some cushy deals for Jiyel and Arland. She wasn't even trying for that, but sure!
Everyone managed to form peaceful agreements, even Corval and Hise, which I suspect is the power of story mode because Lian was pretty useless.
Ha the game is like "As far as you know, nothing of note happens involving Revaire" with the heavy implication that there's stuff I'm missing.
"Only you can decide if your time at the Isle was a success or failure. This chapter of your life has ended. But the rest of your life is just beginning."
THE END
That was overall pretty good! The writing for the last week is really bland but the basic ideas are good, and I'll be able to skip through most of it on replays. It would be nice to know what happens next, and have an extra romance scene, which is apparently what will be added in the final version. But for an unfinished game, this isn't too bad as a place to end.
I am definitely going to play again with a guide, but haven't decided what approach I'll take yet. Asides from having persuasion and insight because all those failures were KILLING me (and would have probably killed Lian literally on Challenge mode)
