Helix Waltz is a mobile game where the main mechanic is constructing outfits to wear to balls.

I've found a bunch of useful guides, but I needed a more simple and methodical approach. This has gotten me to level 51, at the start of Chapter 5, I don't know if it's much help past that point. Also, just because it's more intuitive for me doesn't mean it will be for you, there's other guides out there that might suit better.

Anyway! Here's how I make outfits.

The reddit has a nice masterlist of links. I'm going to assume you're familiar with the information in the three guides at the top, even if some of it is a bit confusing.

The most relevant thing is that the better your outfit's score, the easier it generally is to achieve your goals at balls. The score is a combination of the base stats of each item combined with the outfit's "chic": eg, if it's a blue themed ball, how many blue items you're wearing. When interacting with individual people, it can also be useful to maximise stats relating to that person.

The approach I take is:
1) create and save a "maximum stats" base outfit with all my best items
2) adjust this outfit for each individual ball

Here's the most basic version:

1) Click on the middle of the mirror in the main menu. Click on any category and sort by "chic". Go through the list of item types and assign all the highest rated items. Click "save outfit" and save it with a name like "Max stats". Every time you get a nice new item, remake the "max stats" outfit to include it.
2) When you're about to enter a ball, click on "sets" and choose the "Max stats" outfit. Again, sort the items by chic and go through and assign the top rated item in each category.

This will work on like 95% of balls.

You may be thinking step one was pointless if you're just going to assign everything again, and at the start of the game it kind of is. But as the game progresses there's a lot to keep track of, and it helps to start from a solid base.

And now, some more details.

Constructing a base outfit:

The thing that makes this complex is that Magda can wear more than one of some item types at once. For example, in the bracelets category, she can wear gloves, and a bracelet on her left hand, and a bracelet on her right hand, and you want her to be wearing the best version of all three types to get the maximum score.

Also, while you can rely on random drops to give you ok rated versions of some items, for others like pets or partners you'll have to seek them out (see below).

Here's all the types of item. The ones marked "N/A" don't affect your chic score but still affect your overall score. This means that you won't have to change them for specific balls.

So. Go through each item type and make sure Magda is wearing the highest chic rated item in every category and sub-category, eg make sure she has the highest rated gloves, the highest rated left bracelet, and the highest rated right bracelet.

This is pretty easy for "bracelet", but gets a lot harder for, say, "head". In general you want head accessories of the types hat, veil, mask, and eyewear. But it's not always easy to tell what subcategory an item is in at a glance: the "elf veil" works as a hat, the "veil of vow" as a veil, and the "veil of humility" seems to be in it's own unique fifth category. Similarly, it can be hard to tell if a necklace is actually a scarf. I've had to settle for trial and error: just keep poking around until Magda's wearing as many different types of item as possible, then poking some more until she's wearing the best combination I can find.

Take note of any categories or subcategories where you don't have any high rated items, or have no items at all, and try and fill them (see below). Remember to scroll down and check "lingerie".

Note: You can only wear a dress or a top and bottom. I default to dresses, since the stats are usually better, but if you don't have any good dresses it's worth checking the tops and bottoms.

Constructing a ball specific outfit:

Once again, go through each category and subcategory and pick the best item.

I've seen conflicting reports on whether it's better to use a high rated item that doesn't fit the ball's theme, or a low rated one that does. I tend to default to low rated items that fit the theme, and that's been working out well for me.

For messy categories like "head" I don't stress about it, though. If something different to my "Max stats" item shows up near the top of the list I switch to it, but otherwise just assume whatever veil etc I'm wearing is good enough.

Constructing a character specific outfit:

I don't bother with this unless I go to a ball using the approach above and fail my goal.

If I fail a beauty contest, I look at what stats they beat me on, and generally try to increase the stats that are listed as their strengths and weaknesses on the wiki. I do this by going through each item category and subcategory and seeing if there's something with a similar star/chic rating but better stats that I can swap to. If that doesn't work I go looking for better clothes.

I've never bothered making an outfit to attract a character I just want to talk to. If I'm running out of energy and they haven't shown up yet I just keep noping out of conversation with everyone else until the character I'm interested in shows up (unless someone offers to dance, since that usually increases energy). But in theory, you can make people talk to you and gain favour more quickly by choosing items with their preferred stats, as listed in the wiki.

Free and easy ways to get better items:

  • Log in every day for seven days to get a really nice set of items. The rewards after that are less exciting.
  • Enchant your top rated items to increase their value. It's easy to get more badges to pay for this at the Spiral Spire, so don't be stingy.
  • Just keep playing the game! Check the gifts tag for free eggs from increasing favour etc. Hope for good random drops.
  • Spend 200 hearts on the "Heart Resource Box" in the gift tag to get ten random materials and clothes. Once you do this three times, you get to pick one 3-4 star item, which is a great way to fill a hole in your wardrobe. Hearts are moderately easy to get by attending balls.
  • Keep an eye on the "events" section. The cards and anything that mentions "recharge" cost actual money, but some events are free and you can get good items. This is the only way I know of to get pets, and the best way to get a partner early on.
  • Get a character to 10 stars so they can be your partner. Ok, this isn't easy, I haven't even managed it yet myself. But it is free!

Remaking and Dying items:

This is done in Diane's shop. There's probably a better way to do this, but I just go through all the categories and when I own two or more of something I check to see if remaking or dying it will create something that looks useful eg it has a highish number of stars or is a colour I don't own in that item.

Remember to go to Xavier's shop and click "auto-decompose" every now and then to get free materials.

Buying from shops:

I bought the Cat's Tail, Immortal bandage, and White Bloomers from Diane's Shop, and am glad I did, since I have yet to get any other tails or lingerie from events or drops.

I'm otherwise a skinflint, and too lazy to figure out which designs are good, so haven't bought anything else asides from an Embroidered Petticoat, which has nice stats after being enchanted even if it makes all my outfits ugly. But if you feel like spending some coin there's some nice items for sale that can improve your outfits.

Spending Diamonds:

This is the best and quickest way to get nice items and matched sets. It's also the most expensive.

While you get a small number of diamonds from quests etc, the main way to get them is to pay actual real life money. I'm not interested in doing that, so have no advice on how to get the best value for money.

But so far the best approach I've found for spending my limited stash of diamonds has been
(a) Spending 20 to get the Cat's Tail
(b) Spending several thousand on the "shining clothes box" in the gifts tab during a "Consume diamonds for clothes" event. I got some nice clothes and a pet from the event, and since I'd filled up the energy bar got to pick one item, and there was a partner available thanks to a different event.

So I'd advise saving up your diamonds until you have about 4000 and then spending them on an event with nice rewards. Or you could just spend them on the shining clothes box any time you have 1000 free to get random high value clothes right away, and not worry about events.

What about rarity and sets?

I know these affect things but I have no idea how, and so never pay attention to them >.>

And that is how I make outfits in Helix Waltz! I hope someone finds it useful, and if you have better advice I'd be glad to hear it.
