Spoilery thoughts on Solo

How did Qi'ra and Han end up with snooty English and generic American accents respectively, despite growing up together? THEY JUST DID.
Anyway: I watched the trailer and thought "I'm going to get attached to these new female characters and they're all going to die or at least never be seen again". And HERE WE ARE.
But I am now taken with the idea of Qi'ra encountering Kylo Ren in their shared Social Circles of Evil and keeping an eye on him. And then later, killing him when Rey and Leia etc can't/won't.
Also man I loved L3 but am so sad her moment of triumph ended with what was left of her being stuck inside a ship controlled by a human. She needs to be free! I like to think eventually she will be.
In general the handling of robot rights was uncomfortable but also I liked seeing it poked at at all? I have mixed feelings.
At the point where Beckett was warning Han about Qi'ra I was like "Ugh, I know he doesn't mean it in a sexist way, but this is such a gendered trope, it would be so much more interesting if Val had lived and he'd died. Well, unless this talk of betrayal is setup for HIM betraying Han." So, given the plot they had it worked being him but ehhh idk. In general I feel like there was some weird stuff going on with race that went over my head.
On the upside, Val was a cool character. I liked that all of Beckett's crew were just...who they were. They could be lovely, but remained the people who would have been quite happy to murder Han just for getting in their way. Beckett in particular would do the right thing, all things being equal. It was just that if the scales were tipped even slightly towards it being in his best interest to do a bad thing, he would.
Also Han was such an adorable puppy? Exactly the big sap he always has been, just not hiding it as well yet.
I have always understood the appeal of the various Lando/Han/Chewie combos but this definitely sold me on them all some more, and on all of them as characters. I feel like Han's arc ended in a good place, but could go for a Lando movie!
I also have vague thoughts of weird angsty and maybe kinda sexy future interactions with Qi'ra and Han and/or Leia. Which may involve Han in chains? Look, the movie started it.
I love enemies-to-lovers but this sort of tragic lovers-to-enemies is catnip to me too, especially when it has femdommy overtones. But then I want a happy ending somehow without undermining the delicious angst and can't come up with one that doesn't feel cheap. So I am just left with FEELINGS.

Date: 2018-05-25 04:14 am (UTC)I really did optimistically expect Beckett to get fridged for Val, and I was sad throughout that their roles weren't swapped, but perhaps most especially when the Marauder pulled off her helmet and turned out to be someone who looked quite similar to Thandie Newton -- that moment would have been so much better with the two of them facing each other across an ethical divide.
(I felt equally conflicted about the handling of robot rights.)

Oh my god, you're right. That is bizarre.
My expectations were low, before the movie came out I saw someone say "So Thandie Newton is in this movie but conspicuously lacking from the trailer, I guess she gets fridged especially early :/", and lo.

Date: 2018-05-27 04:52 am (UTC)Overall, I thought Solo told a bit of backstory that didn't really need to be filled in, much like Rogue One, only without the problems that I had with Rogue One.
Wasn't a necessary story, but was competently told and a fun bit of fluff. But not without it's flaws.
Overall, currently it's the new SW movie I like the most after the first watch. I think it's the only one I came out of the movie being pretty much happy with, in fact.
