Because
flamebyrd and I were discussing what to watch now that we've finished Yuri on Ice and it occured to me that if I was making a "stuff I liked" list to narrow down to stuff she might like too, I might as well post the un-narrowed list. Links are easier to do in posts, anyway :)
I'm just looking at Crunchyroll, Netflix and Animelab, other suggestions welcome! I've noted where things are only available on Netflix since you can't watch that for free.
Things I have seen all of and LOVED and EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH:
Things I have seen all of, quite liked, and rec:
Things I have seen all of and enjoyed but only rec with BIG CAVEATS:
Things I have seen some of and intend to watch further:
Things in my queue I have been recced (feel free to sell me on them or warn me off, and note my summaries may be wrong):
Things I did not get into but seem to be good for what they are:
If you're not familiar with moe, the "cute girls doing cute things" genre it's...a thing. At it's worst it's a collection of "cute" tropes like hard work, flailing, spaceyness etc combined with fanservice and no real plot or characterisation. At it's best it can still have some tendencies that way but has lots of nice female friendships.
I think I may have made a post like this a while ago but hey, there's been new anime added since then!
I'm just looking at Crunchyroll, Netflix and Animelab, other suggestions welcome! I've noted where things are only available on Netflix since you can't watch that for free.
Things I have seen all of and LOVED and EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH:
- Snow White with the Red Hair/Akagami No Shirayuki-Hime A young woman makes her way in the world and finds love in a fantasy setting. Sweet and funny and exciting.
- Chihayafuru Surprisingly engaging sports anime about a girl playing karuta, a card game involving Japanese poetry.
- Yuri!!! on Ice Mixture of male figure skating sports anime with a really engaging m/m romance.
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Fantastic steampunk alternate Europe with humour, action, pathos, and complex morality (also on Netflix)
- Ouran Highschool Host Club Hilarious cross dressing shenanigans sending up reverse-harem shoujo highschool tropes. (Also on netflix)
- Azumanga Daioh Really funny Cute Schoolgirl hijinks.
- Cardcaptor Sakura Great magical girl anime, not always quite as light and fluffy as it appears on the surface. Surprising amount of background m/m and f/f for a 90s kids show. Started the Cute Girls genre.
- Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun A girl falls for a guy in her class who writes shoujo romance. Hilariously plays with shoujo tropes.
- Silver Spoon Funny, well written story of a city guy who goes to agricultural college thinking it will be an easy pass.
- My Love Story Heartwarming comedy about two very earnest people in love.
Things I have seen all of, quite liked, and rec:
- Cowboy Bebop Cool, noir-ish Bounty Hunters in Space from the 90s. May not appeal to young people.
- Toradora cute romantic comedy about an impassive guy and feisty girl. Only on Netflix.
- Voltron Legendary Defender Just a really good "young people must form a giant robot to fight an evil galactic empire" story. Only on Netflix. Not technically anime but close enough.
- Durarara!! Supernatural hijinks amongst a group of teenagers and twenty somethings (I have only seen season 1)
- Bodacious Space Pirates Teenage girl inherits a pirate space ship. Very fun and femslashy with background canon f/f. Pacing was a bit off.
- Angelic Layer Sports anime about a girl and her tiny non-sentient fighting robot.
- Hourou Musuko Wandering Son Really sweet, gentle story about two gender non-conforming middle schoolers.
Things I have seen all of and enjoyed but only rec with BIG CAVEATS:
- New Game Cute Girls In The Video Game Industry. Soooo moe.
- Free Highschool boys swim club. Fun but not very deep.
- My Little Monster Objectively mediocre shoujo romance, I just like shoujo romance a lot.
- Servant x Service Very silly and kind of fanservicey comedy about the public service.
- Yuri Kuma Arashi Surreal and fanservicey lesbians who are also murderous but adorable bears. Only recced to those who find that summary appealing.
- Kiss Him, Not Me Fun but not very progressive shoujo romance/comedy. Formerly fat yaoi fan ends up with a reverse harem (including a girl!) who all become friends despite her wanting them to make out with each other.
- Hellsing gory but cool and engaging vampire action.
- FLCL Weird, fast paced coming of age story. Fanservicey and disturbing in parts.
Things I have seen some of and intend to watch further:
- Sailor Moon The classic magical girl anime. Cheesy and flawed but with some great aspects. Surprising amount of background m/m and f/f for a 90s kids show.
- Gatchaman Crowds Superheroes and/or mecha, I think?
- Flying Witch a very gentle, light slice of life story about a teenaged witch in the Japanese countryside.
- Tsurimata Gentle, surreal story of a teenage boy with anxiety becoming friends with an alien and learning to fish.
Things in my queue I have been recced (feel free to sell me on them or warn me off, and note my summaries may be wrong):
- All Out Rugby sports anime.
- Mob Psycho 100 Telepathic boy?
- Kyousougiga Magical family stuff?
- Log Horizon People get stuck in a computer game.
- Amanchu! Cute girls scuba dive.
- Young Black Jack Talented young doctor?
- Time of Eve Bittersweet gentle robots?
- Otome Yokai Zakuro "young half-spirit girls team up with army officers to battle against spirits who would do wrong! "
- Erin "a young woman who is drawn into a war between kingdoms. She has the ability to command animals, including dragons"
- Kaiji Loser gets caught up in illegal card games?
- Kuroko's Basketball Basketball sports anime.
- Steins;Gate Time travel drama.
- FLIP FLAPPERS Femslashy magical girls
- Maria the Virgin Witch A witch must....keep her virginity?? I have heard this is good but it sounds so skeevy!
- Last Exile Steampunk
- Wakakozake Shorts about a woman relaxing with good food and drink.
Things I did not get into but seem to be good for what they are:
- Natsume's Book of Friends Lonely boy gains the ability to see spirits, by helping them he gains new friends. Everyone else finds it heartwarming but it always made me sad.
- Gintama Surreal scifi comedy.
- Kill la Kill Surreal, violent, lots of nudity...I guess it's action comedy?
- Love Live! School Idol Project Cute girls start a choir. Very femslashy.
- Mr Osomatsu Comedy about octuplet brothers.
- Kuro Mukuro Apparently a very good mecha series. Only on Netflix.
- Kids on the Slope coming of age drama set in the 1960s (also on Netflix)
- Rurouni Kenshin Angsty swordsman seeking atonement? I think? Netflix only.
- Bananya Little cats who live in bananas. Incredibly light.
- Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! Magical boy anime, lots of slashiness and humour.
- Chi's Sweet Home - Chi's New Address light and fluffy cat shenanigans.
- Concrete Revolutio A world where superheroes, aliens, magic etc all exist.
- One Punch Man A guy so built he can defeat anyone with one punch grapples with monsters and boredom. Funny, but was too blase about background deaths for me.
- Nichijou - My Ordinary Life Surreal cute girls doing cute things.
- GIRLS und PANZER Cute Girls Drive Tanks.
If you're not familiar with moe, the "cute girls doing cute things" genre it's...a thing. Date: 2017-01-11 08:26 pm (UTC)My additional comments on some of these things:
-Tsurimata: starts out more slice-of-life-y/sports-anime-y, becomes slightly more of a plotty sci-fi in the 2nd half.
-Amanchu: v SOL-y in the "nothing really happens" kind of way but warm and friendly
-Moyashimon: don't watch S2
-Kill la Kill: for those who may be interested, the nudity is actually plot-relevant and also equal-opportunity.
-One Punch Man: also it's a comedy and basically tries to poke fun at neverending fights ala DBZ (although IMO sometimes falls into the trope itself)
I left off all my "I didn't like this show" comments. XD XD XD
I'd try to rec some more things but I have no clue what is/isn't available in Australia. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Date: 2017-01-12 02:05 pm (UTC)Ooh, yeah, I should add that One Punch Man is a comedy!
It looks like Moyashimon S2 is the only one Crunchyroll has, woe. Thanks for the warning!

Date: 2017-01-12 03:52 am (UTC)From CR, have you considered...
* Wakakozake? (ultrashort "episodes" about a young foodie and the delicious food she enjoys after work)
* Mushishi? (dreamy, atmospheric weirdthing of the week about a sort of wandering doctor/scholar/mediator who deals with the uncanny)
* Hourou Musuko? (slice of life about some gender-nonconforming kids who might be trans)
* Sound of the Sky? (this is "moe" I am pretty sure, but reading my writeup from.... jeez, almost five years ago... it seems that I didn't find it too bad, just some light fare)

Date: 2017-01-12 02:02 pm (UTC)Mushishi and Sound of the Sky aren't on the Australian Crunchyroll (also I tried Mushishi and couldn't get into it, though I can intellectually recognise it's quality)
But I LOVED Hourou Musuko then forgot about it and Wakakozake sounds really fun, so, thank you!

Date: 2017-01-12 09:36 am (UTC)(This is my current <3 anime)
A young girl, new to her school makes new friends and rediscovers her passion by participating in that most womanly of martial arts - Driving main battle tanks.
(It all makes sense, really it does!)
I've been drafted to do a panel about this at Swancon.
It's on Crunchyroll and, I think, Netflix.
