I may or may not have spent some time staring at the Steam page at 3am thinking "WHY AREN'T YOU PLAYABLE YET??". But as it turned out I needed Cam to update some drivers and stuff for it to work ANYWAY and he probably wouldn't have appreciated being woken up right then.
In short: not a fan of all the changes, but having fun.
Anyway, the beginning is EXACTLY the same as the demo, only you can control your characters appearance (and your family changes to suit, thus making them the majority of the non-white characters I have met thus far, hmmph) I decided on a male character so that my second character (who won't a total screw up who makes all the wrong choices) can be a girl. He is quite cute :D Also a rogue so I can open chests.
I heard you got to play a commoner but you don't, you have to be a noble :( I found the background story kind of meh, I was hoping it would have more depth/emotional connection than the low-rent Cousland-ness of the demo but it didn't.
It's vastly simplified, even more than Awakening (with which it bears some similarities): simpler, faster combat, simpler inventory (with a very convenient "trash" section to put stuff you intend to sell) less dialogue, less codex entries, less random stuff and people to click on. I've mostly gotten used to not getting a new codex entry and experience boost every time I turn a corner in a new setting, but I do miss getting so much of a "Yay! I achieved something" boost for exploring, and the ability to engage in random conversations with party members while walking about.
The Mass Effect like dialogue wheel is ok, but I miss having so many dialogue options, it feels harder to define my character, especially since I didn't get to define his background (not even as much as in Mass Effect). Then again, I haven't really gotten the chance to make any choices yet, apart from "how friendly/aggressive will I be when I agree to take this job" etc.
I like the new combat a lot, but mainly because on a casual setting I basically click on a few people and they explode in a fountain of blood and it's over. It's actually less effort than typing in the "kill everything" cheat in Dragon Age 1 was once I got sick of the combat in that. I may actually play this game properly (or at least wait a bit longer before looking up cheats :))
I like the new companions pretty well from what I've seen, and am appreciating having the background chatter between them, which I missed while playing Mass Effect.
All the women, including your mother, have ginormous perky boobs, generally half falling out of low cut tops. It's a little distracting.
I've seen a few minor references to the previous game but the only specific reference to the playthrough I imported was the name of who's running Ferelden. For various reasons I kind of wish I'd used my Amell instead of my Brosca but never mind, I can't see it making much difference.
And now I may go back to playing :)
