A while ago I had some thinky thoughts about fanart and posted them to a general meta community since I wasn't sure how interesting it would be to non-fanartists (eg most of you): Difference in styles between what you like and what you draw fanart for.

Anyway, in the process of writing it it occurred that I might get something out of drawing some Revolutionary Girl Utena fanart in a different style, so I converted some official Utena art into a style I'm more comfortable with while still keeping the aspects of the picture I like.

I'm mostly pretty happy with it (being an experiment I didn't put that much effort into it so there's definitely things I'm not 100% happy with), and it was definitely instructive looking at each part of the picture and asking myself "Do I want to keep this like this? If not what about it bugs me and how am I going to change it?". Of course if you prefer the original style to mine it probably looks like a horrible pointless travesty :D

I usually work with two separate types of fanart- "adaptive," where I'm doing the work in my own style, and "imitative," where I'm trying to copy the original style, often with my own designs.

Adaptive stuff usually comes from me wanting to fill in or expand on something that I feel is missing from the original work, rather like most fic. I've also done the stuff in response to prompts on fan comms, though that area's been quieter for me of late. (My devArt thing (http://furikku.deviantart.com/gallery/) has collections of my fanart if anyone feels the need to look.)

The imitative stuff is almost all stuff I make for RPs, and consequently almost all Silent Hill. XD This is generally because I feel much more confident putting up an illustration than blabbing on and on for paragraphs about EVERY GODDAMN DETAIL BECAUSE I AM BLOODY OBSESSED. (Here's some examples (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v480/furikku/SilentMilliways/) of what I do for that stuff.)

Of course, recently I haven't had the drive/time to do a lot of fanarts what with the whole comicry thing. Although there's one I'm slowly working on... Possibly I should get on that instead of babbling in other people's journals. XD

Also I think both your art and the orig Utena art things rock, but then part of the fun of fanart for me is seeing how people convert the original into their own styles.
