After two seasons of the teenage characters being involved in world changing quests and epic battles, being all serious and determined, it reminds us that they are in fact teenagers by having one of them go undercover at a school..and then sending the villains on a BEACH EPISODE. Where they dress in bikinis! And play beach volleyball! (The net ends up on fire) And talk about their feelings! (It's so hard to get boys to like you when you're a megolamaniac psychopath inclined to set them on fire) And go to parties! (Where..well..)
Plus the plot is fantastic but talking about that is spoilery, so I won't. But..ee! I am VERY invested in the charcaters and their world and the war and EVERYTHING.
I also see why people mocked the shippers who insisted they had deliberate subtextual support (this apparently got so heated the writers noticed and made fun of it). This is not a show that does het subtext. If characters are going to get together there are huge blinking signs saying LOVE INTEREST. And often smooches. Which is not to say you can't ship non-canon ships if you want, but I personally found the canon romance pretty convincing (though heteronormative) and there's more interesting things to speculate about.
