So I've made myself a steampunky...thing for wastelands, but since I didn't want to screw it up tried out various techniques on a crappy $3 clock from Red Dot, and as a result have an excess crappily modded "aleithiometer". Anyone going to wastelands want to borrow(*) a crappy prop to fill out their costume? You'd either get it from me at the con (and I will probably only be going on Sunday) or come pick it up from here if you're really keen.

Pictures and description of how I made it after he cut.

It's about 7cm across.

List of dodgy hacks:
I started with a "silver" "travel clock". I opened it up (with a lever, not noticing there were screws. Oops) and put a photoshopped version of this aleithiometer design over the clockface with stickytape.
I then stuck it back together with the one remaining screw that worked (It seems secure. Ish)
Semi-following this tutorial I used "medium" sandpaper on all the surfaces (except the face, which I had masking taped) This looked good.
I think painted it with black acrylic paint, and wiped this off with paper towels. This was VERY MESSY. It also would have been easier if the whole thing was disassembled. But it looked awesome (if splotchy, due to me putting on all the paint at once and then smudging things as I worked around the clock. So to speak :))
I then removed the masking tape and realised the clockface looked stupidly shiny, so I roughed it up with some sandpaper, and redid the paint so it blended in. Also looked good.

I sprayed on some varnish. This looked great, except for the clockface which went TOTALLY CLOUDY! Argh! Still, you can't see the stickytape any more :)

Oh, and I experimented with gold "Ruff and Buff" here and there in preparation for following this tutorial on something else.

I've put a battery in and the clock works, though I knocked the hour and minute hands out of sync while putting on the "aleithiometer" stuff. Still, it does make a nice ticking sound :)

(*)Or maybe keep if you actually like the damn thing enough to use it again

If you wanted to play dressups, we could do some awesome 'lost from time' traveller shots somewhere in town.
