Watching: Tearmoon Empire, Our Dating Story: The Experienced You and The Inexperienced Me, I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness, Heaven Official's Blessing Season 2, My New Boss is Goofy
Dropped/paused: A Girl and Her Guard Dog, I'm in Love With The Villainess, Chainsaw Man
On going and I'm watching:
Tearmoon Empire: Silly but fun story of a Marie Antionette-esque spoiled queen who is killed by guillotine then sent back to her childhood, and the amusing hijinks and unexpected consequences of her attempts to not get murdered again. The "everyone loves her for knowing just what to do" wish fulfilment is cut with self aware humour about how she's actually still fairly selfish and stupid, but slowly getting better. She feels like a not very bright 12 year old with extra memories, not an ubercompetent adult, which also makes her budding romance with another 12 year old not feel too weird.
Our Dating Story: The Experienced You and The Inexperienced Me: Cheesy B-grade male-gazey romcom about a shy, passive nerdy dude who ends up dating a bubbly pretty popular girl who is infamous for sleeping with lots of guys yet deep down just wants to find love. I like that they are both similarly sweet and earnest despite their superficial differences, and enjoy the slightly femdom dynamic, but this is not a good show. He has a fat friend who has some Silly Fat Guy writing/voice, and another girl has fallen in love with him already.
I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness: Silly but amusing romcom/slice of life. The heroine, a sweet-natured woobie Cinderella-type, escapes abuse and ends up at the tower of a reclusive 'demon' magician. He immediately decides he's going to teach her to be "naughty" after a life of self sacrifice and self denial. A lot of the humour revolves around the fact that his idea of 'naughtiness' is, like, eating cake or staying up playing video games, and despite his BWAHAHA I AM A DARK LORD persona he is basically decent and socially awkward. There's a bunch of Random Hot Girls around but thus far they seem more invested in making the heroine happy than expressing any interest in the hero.
Heaven Official's Blessing Season 2: Chinese m/m romance. I can't say how good this is because I love the book SO MUCH, I just spend every episode going AHHHH THAT SCENE :D :D But I think it's a pretty good adaptation thus far! Summary from my guide to the book:
The main character, Xie Lian, is a former golden child who ascended to god-hood at the age of seventeen full of idealistic intentions...and it went so badly he spent 800 years as a God of Trash. As the story begins, he's gotten another chance at real godhood, but at this point is cheerfully cynical about his odds of ever actually achieving anything meaningful. But while he's doing Heaven's bidding, Xie Lian encounters a strangely charming demon king who seems to know him...
My New Boss is Goofy: Cute Businessmen Doing Cute Things story about the work relationship and friendship between a guy who quit his previous job due to an abusive boss, and his new boss, who is competent and decent yet endearingly awkward. They are SO shippy and it is TOTALLY not going to go anywhere, but it's enjoyably cute regardless.
Ongoing and I ran out of steam:
A Girl and Her Guard Dog: A romance between a 16 year old yakuza princess and the loyal 26 year old bodyguard who helped raise her. This had some elements I enjoyed (weird romance with complicated power dynamics, weird couple fail to blend with normal people but totally understand each other) but leaned a bit too much into bland heteronormative cliche and cross-gen incest vibes for my tastes. She was too much a Normal Relatable Girl and not enough Weird Yakuza Princess.
I'm in Love With The Villainess: ok adaptation of the f/f isekai light novel about a sad lesbian who ends up as the heroine of an otome game she was playing, and actively pursues the villainess character despite all the characters and narrative pushing her away. I enjoyed the book well enough but didn't like some aspects, like how romantically pushy the protagonist is, and didn't find myself feeling like watching the same story again.
Older and I ran out of steam:
Chainsaw Man: mistreated teen mafia underling ends up with demon powers, and is recruited to the government's demon hunting division. His one life goal is to touch a boob, which for him represents the normal happy life he never thought he'd have. RIDICULOUSLY violent and over the top but very engaging and energetic with some effective dark, oddball humour. I ran out of a steam a few episodes in and his objectification of women gets annoying, but the female characters are actually (very strange) people with lives beyond being sexy, even if he doesn't always notice, and it was a fun watch when I was feeling down.
