I did not enjoy this!
FuChai spends a huge chunk of it intensely miserable because of Chenfeng's actions, and while it's not entirely his fault it's still not very fun or shippy. And even once things improve and they get together I felt like the basic problems of their relationship weren't really fixed: he wants to keep her protected and cosseted from the world, and she treats him like a beloved pet. Of all the love interests, he is the only one I felt got really uncomfortable about the gender and power aspects of her being King. And also the one where I felt most uncomfortable about the power she has over him! I should not end a romance thinking they can both do better!
I was worried he was going to get rapey, but he doesn't, in fact the route is weirdly sexless for a yandere repressed overprotective older brother type character (though he does get shirtless a lot). But the game repeatedly pokes at a different rape trauma Fuchai has so it was still kinda triggering!
Blech. Oh well, I enjoyed the other routes, and this certainly wasn't the worst thing I've ever played. Mostly I'm annoyed because I think ChenFeng had the potential to be a much more enjoyable love interest.

*scrolls back through log*
FuChai blames herself for ChenFeng's curse progressing, and is determined to heal his heart by paying more attention to him and making sure he's not worried about her. ShaoJiang doesn't understand putting herself in danger for a guard but FuChai says they've known each other since childhood and she sees him as family.
Once again Chenfeng doesn't remember anything about what happened. Also he has a lot of flamey looking black curse marks on his arm and stomach.
A messenger arrives a message from Wu ZiXu asking for FuChai to return to GuSu, and ChenFeng calms FuChai down and asks reasonable questions etc... and then STABS THE MESSENGER.
Chapter 11
OH YAY IT'S ANOTHER FLASHBACK TO FUCHAI'S WEDDING
Young Noble: My Queen, the wedding ceremony will be complete after we drink this cup of ceremonial wine.
"I cannot help but sigh seeing the excitement in that youngster's bright eyes."
FuChai is 16, how old is her husband??
She knows this is her father's will, and anyone picked by Wu ZiXu will be good, but is not interested and feels helpless.
ChenFeng: My Liege! A coup!
'The youngster' leans against her in fright.
UUURGH AND THEN CHENFENG GETS STABBED AND SHE CALLS FOR HIM AND WAKES UP AND IT WAS ALL A DREAM BUT HE IS ALL YANDERE AND CREEPY
It's not quite triggering me but it's definitely borderline, and it's triggering her. He's 'protecting' her by drugging her and isolating her from everyone else and not listening to anything she says. She realises the ChenFeng she knew is gone.
She manages to escape, but is weak from not eating the drugged food, and he catches up to her. She forces him to stay back by putting her sword to her throat.
Oh nooooooo, Fuchai, GouJian is not going to help D:
He disarms her and laughingly asks ChenFeng how he should be punished for losing his weapon. ChenFeng earnestly and coldly replies that he has failed his duty.
GOD. Like ChenFeng is cursed and miserable, but this is GouJian's DREAM. FuChai under his control? Weak, humiliated and dependent but safe?
Him being around makes the dynamic more interesting, and will hopefully stop ChenFeng getting too creepy. Though GouJian's line for 'too creepy' is...pretty far...
Zheng Dan's voice says "King of Yue, it seems you care for this woman, since you came so quickly to see her"
Leaning over his shoulder, laughing seductively...is another FuChai.
With no sprite because art is expensive. I realise they just re-used Zheng Dan's voice actor because actors are also expensive but that doesn't change the implication that FuChai's voice sounds like a tenor.
He turns back into Zheng Dan. When she angrily demands to know what's happened to Wu ZiXu, Zheng Dan says he's been imprisoned for insulting his king, then smiles and tells ChengFeng to bring back his head.
...kinda shipping FuChai/Wu ZiXu over the alternatives so far, game.
As GouJian takes her back to her room, Fuchai begs him to wake from his curse. Oh, Fuchai :(
GouJian: You can't even save yourself and you're bothered by this? I will tell you the truth on account of our past friendship. The day I entered the kingdom of Ng I swore to destroy it with my own two hands. I am happy I can gain the assistance of my Sovereign God. Ha, I even told my Sovereign God which direction YiGuang went in, I wouldn't count on him coming back :)
ChenFeng holds her as she collapses in misery, but only looks at her blankly as she orders him not to kill Wu ZiXu.
ChenFeng: I will take you back to the palace.
Zheng Dan: Have I permitted it? :/
ChenFeng, flatly: I beg my Sovereign God for his permission. After I send my Liege back, I will take Wu ZiXu's head.
Zheng Dan: Kneel down and beg me.
FuChai feels a humiliation deeper than any she has ever known.
Chapter 12
MORE RAPE FLASHBACK? REALLY? IS THAT NECESSARY??
FuChai wakes, feeling alone, empty and useless.
Fuchai: Why don't you just kill me? It's not like you care about me anyway.
ChenFeng: I only care about Ah-Yu and noone else.
FuChai: Care? Hahaha! What is the point of caring about a useless piece of garbage? I have nothing left now! Because of you!
ChenFeng: ...
FuChai: *sigh* I can't blame you. This is my fault, for trusting that rat GouJian. I hurt everyone, and harmed the Kingdom of Ng. Why don't you just kill me?
ChenFeng lays his head in her lap.
ChenFeng: You won't die while I am here.
FuChai: You don't understand...you can't, you have forgotten everything.
ChenFeng: I still remember my promise to abandon everything, even my life, to protect Ah-Yu.
FuChai: Ah-Yu died five years ago.
ChenFeng: You can be Ah-Yu again, as long as you let go of what does not belong to you.
FuChai: Is that what the dragon god wants?
ChenFeng: It is what I want.
FuChai: So what if I were to give up everything? As long as the blood of the royal family of Ng flows in my veins, the Dragon God will not let me go. I will become ashes in front of you. It's just a matter of time.
ChenFeng: ...then I will die with Ah-Yu.
FuChai: Fine. Let's die together.
This almost works for me.
A dark figure flashes past the window, leaving behind a strip of fabric: the code GouJian and FuChai used when they wanted to meet. On it are the words "Set fire during fifth watch".
For a moment, like a dumbass, I thought GouJian might have had a change of heart, but then FuChai realises one other person knows about this code: Wu ZiXu. Who is still very much looking like best boy right now.
Finding myself not wanting to keep going because it's making me tense, going to fast forward and scroll back until it gets fun. If it does.
After setting fire to her bedroom, FuChai escapes in a maid outfit Wu ZiXu provided, and she sees GouJian and ChenFeng freaking out that she might be in danger. SUCK IT, LOSERS.
Wu ZiXu has such a nice smile! He's so nice! He's totally going to die trying to take back the city again, isn't he :(
He asks if he should kill ChenFeng if it come to that, and she says he has to do what is necessary.
YEP. GOING TO DIE.
FuChai is consumed with despair and just keeps repeating to herself "Forget not my revenge...and break the sacred vow..."
ChenFeng attacks! He's visibly surrounded by an evil miasma. When she refuses to surrender, saying Ah-Yu is gone and she can only be Fuchai, he draws his sword shouting "It is because of you that Ah-Yu has become that monster!"
GongSun Yi knocks him out! GO GONGSUN YI.
FuChai has ChenFeng thrown back onto the enemy ship, which she got her guards to drill holes in while pretending to retreat.
They capture some followers, who do their best to kill themselves in captivity.
FuChai: If you tell us the dragon god's plans, we will save you.
Follower: We don't fear death!
FuChai: I was not referring to saving your life :) Chop off his injured hand before he tries to kill himself again.
Guard: *chops off hand*
FuChai: Chop off his legs too, we don't have time to pursue escapees. If he won't talk, we can cut off his tongue.
Follower: CHENFENG SAID TO MEET AT NANBO MOUNTAIN.
blah blah military strategy, fighting, death
She realises ChenFeng is being used as the centre of an evil magical array powering a monster currently eating the army of Ng...somehow? Even though he's not a mage or anything? Sure.
ChenFeng: If there's no Kingdom of Ng, there is no FuChai!
Really not being supportive of your girlfriend's career here, dude.
She tries and fails to stab him.
ChenFeng: Why did you not kill me on the ship?
FuChai: ...I don't know.
ChenFeng, pointing the sword at himself: I will give you another chance. Either return Ah-Yu to me, or kill me.
FuChai: I choose neither!
ChenFeng: What if I told you I killed Wu ZiXu? You knew this would happen yet you abandoned him just like you abandoned me. You can sacrifice anyone's life, even Ah-Yu's. You are a freak who lives only for the Kingdom of Ng!
FuChai is consumed with anger and despair. "ChenFeng's words are sharp like a sword that cut up my rationale that I tried so hard to hold together. The creature that is about to be born in front of it's disremembered brothers...is about to break out of it's cocoon."
The screen fills with the words KILL HIM
...it's tempting...
But walkthrough says no. Sigh.
She drops her sword and punches him, saying "Shut up! I won't kill you. Even if you forget, I will remember the years you accompanied me. I haven't become a cold blooded creature of hatred. I will snatch you back from the Dragon God!"
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu....
FuChai: I'm here. I've always been here.
He whispers "I don't...want to hurt you...again..." and smiles at her sadly, before stabbing himself in the chest.
The monsters approach, and she says "Fine. Let us die together."
And then YiGuang arrives on a dragon and defeats the monsters, and descends like a fairy, holding his hand towards FuChai. HELLO NEW BEST BOY.
YiGuang: Ah-Yu, are you alright??
FuChai: Please...save ChenFeng...
Chapter 14
Flashback:
YiGuang: Are you teasing ChenFeng again?
TengYu: So what if I am? He won't get angry. I treat him like a friend.
YiGuang: Other people treat him as your servant. When you get in trouble, he gets punished. Yet you are bullying him. ChenFeng really is pitiful.
TengYu: ...ChenFeng, come out. I have asked Mr SunWu to take you as his disciple. No one will dare bully you any more.
She wakes to YiGuang, who says none of this is her fault and that she and ChenFeng will be fine. Also, he saw Wu ZiXu alive in Gusu after ChenFeng had left to pursue FuChai, so while he might be dead by now, it wouldn't be at ChenFeng's hand.
YiGuang: I don't know why he lied. But the ChenFeng we knew, despite looking cold on the outside, was the kindest and most selfless amongst us.
FuChai: Maybe he wanted me to kill him, before the curse consumes him :(
Qi has been beaten back for now, and GongSun Yi begs FuChai to save ShaoJiang from being forced to marry Tian Heng.
FuChai wants to save Gusu, but they lack the power. If they rescue ShaoJiang first, they will have access to her dagger. Meanwhile YiGuang leaves again to try and find the body of the ding.
Ahaha GongSun Yi is dubious about FuChai's plan to "crossdress" as a maid to enter Qi unnoticed. Isn't it too humbling, as a grown man?
ShaoJiang happily hugs FuChai, but sadly shakes her head when FuChai offers another set of maids clothes, saying she has to stay and marry Tian Heng or her nephew will die.
FuChai just smiles and says noone will know ShaoJiang is gone...because FuChai will take her place. FuChai has faced a situation like this before, and can take care of Tian Heng, and once ShaoJiang has her daggers she will be unstoppable. FuChai clearly wants to save ShaoJiang from experiencing the same trauma she did.
FuChai: Go and return quickly, I will wait for you to save me.
Current standings: ShaoJiang > YiGuang > Wu ZiXu (loses points for being dead) > Gongsun Yi > GuCao > that lady from the village >>> ChenFeng >>>> GouJian
FuChai throws a violent tantrum to scare off the maid. I guess she ALSO sounds like ShaoJiang's high voiced voice actress then, or is a good actor haha.
Nnng Tiang Heng is all I Like A Girl With Spirit but then it turns out he knew she was a fake.
Tian Heng: You are eloquent, young, and clean looking, with the physique of a warrior. Could you be the sickly and weak King of Ng?
This is the first time anyone has pegged FuChai as faking her identity, and it's when she's 'cross-dressing' as a woman. This GAME.
He says he'll use the reputation for cruelty that Ng gained after the sacking of Chu to make it look like they set the palace on fire and killed the young King of Qi.
ShaoJiang appears on her phoenix to save FuChai, along with the Ng army, helped by GongSun Yi. Tian Heng accuses GongSun Yi of being a traitor.
I could have sworn ShaoJiang's nephew, the king, was supposed to be a baby but apparently he's 8? Anyway, GuCao saved him, and gets him to safety on the phoenix by cheerfully saying that flying on the big bird will be fun.
Tian Heng puts his sword to FuChai's neck and backs into a smoke filled room.
FuChai, passing out: ChenFeng...save me...
He shows up, half naked again for some reason. Her being in a wedding dress and him being injured makes her flash back to her wedding day, but then she realises he's leaning over her to protect her from a burning beam that has fallen across his back. The dark swirling marks cover his whole body now.
She drags him out of the room. "I am the King of Ng...surely I can save you..."
She hears people exclaim as a green dragon puts out the fire.
Chapter 15
Flashback:
Tengyu cries to her father, HeLu, that her dog Ah-Huang is dead. HeLu says she will have a new Ah-Huang who will live as long as her, and protect her, and play with her.
Just when I thought this route was done finding ways to squick me...
TengYu: I will give him a new name, and give him all my treats.
Present:
FuChai strokes the hair of the bandaged ChenFeng as he sleeps. ShaoJiang berates YiGuang for overdoing it helping the injured, and he says that as a doctor he knows the limits of the body.
YiGuang says he's not strong enough to cure ChenFeng, but Mage Yang is, and takes FuChai to the spiritual realm to claim the body of the ding etc.
FuChai: Please save ChenFeng. I will face any danger.
Mage Yang: You cannot save someone who does not wish to be saved.
Just before she enters the test, YiGuang says her emotions will be amplified, and the jade fish will follow her.
She finds herself in a misty forest. She calls out for Chenfeng, and follows a misty figure to find two ChenFengs arguing over who is truly protecting Ah-Yu.
Shadow A says he is returning her to the peaceful life she should have had before HeLu forced her to take on the mission of executing the god.
Shadow B says he is listening to her wishes, and that a life without freedom is another kind of torture.
Team Shadow B!
When FuChai shouts for them to stop, they say she can decide which of them will disappear and which will exist. The choices are "You are both ChenFeng" (correct) and "I will choose neither of you" (harsh!).
FuChai: The human heart always has contradictions.
Shadow: I live for Ah-Yu and die for Ah-Yu. You are my only responsibility and my longing. But Ah-Yu is the King of Ng, and only cares about Ng. I am but a shadow. The only thing I can do is protect you. But I do not know how to treat you kindly.
FuChai: You are not a shadow, you are my only pillar of support.
The Shadow smiles, but then curls in pain, consumed in miasma, saying "You cannot stay here! I will hurt you!"
The shadows stabs itself and she finds herself in a corridor. When ChenFeng appears she hugs him and he takes her hand to lead her to safety.
Fuchai: You always take care of my daily needs...yet I feel that we have not been this close for a long time.
ChenFeng: We have both grown up.
FuChai: We cannot return to the past but we can create a new future.
ChenFeng: ...Is that so?
He pushes her into the dark, saying "The person you seek is still far away".
DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER RAPE FLASHBACK
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, the people who want to harm you have been killed by me, so you do not have to be afraid.
He throws down her uncle FuGai's severed head.
Look I get how lying half-dead in a pool of your own blood while the princess you love and are meant to guard is raped would be traumatising but also I really am not here for FuChai being all "Oh no my rape traumatised him too, that's why he has been mistreating me". Like I do sympathise with ChenFeng on a Doylist level but on a Watsonian level did we REALLY have to go there, game??
She reminds him of the truth: that he did his best, but could not stop FuGai.
ChenFeng: Bullshit! I saved Ah-Yu!!
FuChai, hugging him: You did save me. Even though I encountered great humiliation, you still treated me like you usually did. You did not avoid me or treat me with any special consideration. Because of your bluntness, I dared face myself, and am able to love again.
The place where FuGai stabbed him starts to bleed.
ChenFeng: I wish you hadn't gone through all that pain...
FuChai: Me too...
He hugs her back, and they're in a beautiful outdoor scene.
ChenFeng: If you keep hugging me I won't get any farming done. But I can do something else if you want me to ;)
FuChai: I know this is the Spiritual Realm but it's not like you to say such things.
ChenFeng: Spiritual Realm? You don't recognise your own home? Have you been doing too much sewing?
She pushes away his concerned hand and explains firmly that she is the King of Ng, come to save him from the Dragon God's curse.
He laughs and says they are simple peasants who worship the River God. He pulls her close and kisses her cheek and she is drawn in by the happy life he's imagined for them. She starts to feel sleepy and I have the choice to stay awake or let her rest.
NO REST FOR CURSED KINGS
A fish jumps from the river and splashes her awake.
FuChai: Is this really your wish? I was destined to be unable to choose a normal farm life. The proud, stubborn and noble bloodline of the Kings of Ng flows in me. Do you really wish for me to be a little girl who can only depend on you?
ChenFeng becomes a shy looking teenager.
ChenFeng: ChenFeng is just a servant, and I dare not offend the Princess.
FuChai: Who said that you are a servant? Father said that you will protect me, and play with me. That makes you my friend forever.
ChenFeng: ChenFeng does not have the right to be friends with the princess. Please do not put me in a difficult spot.
FuChai: If you don't believe me, we can strike palms as a promise. No matter whether you are rich or poor, Ah-Yu will be friends with ChenFeng. We will support and love each other, and never abandon the other. Of course, I can bully you but not vice-versa, because I am petty and remember grudges.
He thinks this is a weird promise, but agrees. He smiles, and grows taller than her (he was shorter when she was 9 and he was 12??)
She kisses him, realising her feelings for him.
ChenFeng, blushing: Now it is not just a cheap friendship. Ah-Yu is really greedy.
FuChai: It's not like just only realised that today.
ChenFeng: Thank you for finding me. But the curse will be here soon, you have to leave.
FuChai: Come with me.
ChenFeng: I can't...I have to defeat all those delusions you saw to regain my whole soul.
FuChai: Then I will stay with you and fight.
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, your battlefield is on the outside. The person I love is the noble King of Ng. She has to break the Sacred Vow, rescue the people of Ng, and believe that we will reunite in the real world.
FuChai: I believe in you.
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, stay safe.
As everything dissolve in light, she feels something soft on her lips.
Ok that was really cute! I think the basic arc of this route is solid, it just has the ratio of "Love interest is unpleasant" to "love interest is endearing" way off.
Chapter 16
Now with the support of Qi and Lu, FuChai returns to Ng to take back her city.
She goes to check on the sleeping ChenFeng, dark runes moving around his body during his internal fight. She doesn't like how his stubble feels and decides it would not be elegant to say goodbye with him looking dishevelled, so orders hot water to clean him up.
FuChai: I never knew cleaning someone up is so troublesome. ChenFeng, you are very capable.
ChenFeng: ...
FuChai: After the coup, I was afraid of being touched, and yet did know how to clean myself up...before you recovered I was very unkept. You are the only person I've never felt afraid of. Even when you don't say anything, you are always able to comfort and support me. There, you are all clean. That is what I call handsome.
She curls up beside him.
FuChai: I was give you many fun snacks in the future, and bring you to many fun places. I will wait for you, so you have to come back. I will share some of my strength in your dreams.
Battle against the dragon god! Wu ZiXu's severed head D: Zheng Dan threatens to drown the city.
GouJian: Ah-Yu, we have you outnumbered! You let me return to Yue so I will give you a chance to live! If you surrender I promise to protect the citizens of Gusu!
FuChai: Over our dead body!
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, leave this to me. Go do what you must, I believe in you!
FuChai: We appoint ChenFeng as General!
She rushes to the altar, where ShaoJiang and YiGuang are almost at their limit. Seeing her people fight for their lives, she is determined they will not lose, and pierces the seal on her chest with her own hands (ow!)
She is summoned again to the spiritual realm. When asked to what end the righteousness of her heart leads her, she says "Although the human heart is weak it also has strength. If people can strengthen their hearts, the heavens will give them great virtue."
Mage Yang smiles and says she has reached the pinnacle of virtue, and she receives the power of the body of the ding.
She returns to see the monsters vanish in the rain. An injured ChenFeng limps over and says he has injured the King of Yue and beaten back his army. YiGuang breaks the vow and the dragon god turns to ashes.
FuChai and ChenFeng hug, bedraggled but beautiful.
FuChai: I caught you.
ChenFeng: Yes, I'm back :)
Epilogue:
TengYu: Heehee, ShaoJiang says in her letter she is ignoring GuCao's proposal.
ChengYu: I remember the King of Qi really likes GuCao...no, I should refer to him as the King of Ng now. Could the princess still be hung up on Ah-Yu?
TengYu: What's there to be hung up on? The King of Ng, FuChai, has "passed away". Now the hegemonic King is GuCao. What girl would not admire him? She is just being shy. Also, GouJian figured out I faked my death and asked GuCao if I'm alright.
ChengFeng: I should have killed him back then :)
TengYu: Hehe are you jealous?
ChengFeng: I'm only afraid he'll search high and low for you, and that would mean trouble for us. But Ah-Yu is mine. I will never be afraid of losing you, no matter who comes to find me.
TengYu: Yah, yah, what's yours is yours. Just like you are mine.
YiGuang comes to join them, but they will be alone again at home that night.
The End
I take it back I do have a problem with the dynamic.
Their relationship is so broken! It starts out with her treating him like a beloved pet she takes for granted, and him being consumed with resentment that she's king. He THEORETICALLY works through his resentment but then she's just not king any more so it's not clear he would have handled it long term, and she just goes to treating him like a beloved pet she doesn't take for granted. Blech! I feel like both of them could do better!
I mean we don't even know what this FuChai is doing with her life, beyond reliving childhood memories of hanging out with her two best friends.
I didn't mind her choosing the quiet life so much on the YiGuang path, because it was established early on that that was something that FuChai wanted, not as a denial of reality or return to childhood but as a new future they were creating together. And I didn't mind GouJian trying to control and 'protect' her so much because the game doesn't validate him at all and he's forced to accept her being his King.
Part of me feels like writing a version that works out in a way I find satisfying because it absolutely had potential. The GouJian route handled some similar issues in a much better way, and ChenFeng is a much less terrible guy!
Bad End:
*sigh* Let's get this over with.
FuChai goes to stab ChenFeng, then stops herself, because that's what the Dragon God wants.
Ooh after two bad choices I get new and different choices!
In the spiritual realm, instead of doggedly defending her, ChenFeng becomes consumed by the thought that he is useless to her, that he should just take her away from everything.
She runs from him and shouts for YiGuang to save her.
She wakes to a concerned YiGuang, who pulled her out of the curse dream. He reassures her that they will defeat the dragon god and save ChenFeng.
The battle happens much the same.
ChenFeng drags himself out of bed to defend her from Zheng Dan, but then attacks "FuChai".
The only way to defeat the dragon god is to stop ChenFeng. She stabs him as he stabs her too. They both start to crumble into ash and water.
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, the one I love most...is you...
The last thing she hears is YiGuang breaking the vow and turning the dragon god into a small white snake.
GouJian continues his attack. ShaoJiang bursts into tears and YiGuang sadly says "They both went back to where they belong. We should end this war."
Epilogue:
YiGuang says he hasn't seen ShaoJiang for a long time. He invited her to visit him for the Autumn ceremony. The situation in Qi is getting bad enough that she may have to flee with her nephew.
ShaoJiang: I wish to do that...but it is not up to me. GouJian is supporting the Jiang clan in our opposition of the Tian clan...I am really worried he may suggest us having a political marriage.
CONGRATS GAME A NEW WAY TO SQUICK ME
MAYBE GUCAO/SHAOJIANG ISN'T SO BAD
YiGuang: It might not be bad to have the protection of the King of Yue.
ShaoJiang: Even though he rebuilt Gusu he is a despicable traitor!
YiGuang: Rebuilding the city exactly as it was when Ah-Yu was around cost a lot more than making a new city... So, what happened to that snake?
ShaoJiang: It's very silly, not much different to an ordinary animal. Oh, it's on Lord Ng's grave.
YiGuang: Maybe it's chasing the bird that was there. It flew off towards the river.
Under the water, a young TengYu teases ChenFeng about who caught the most fish.
THE END
The one thing I did like about this route is getting to see more of what was going on with ChenFeng and GouJian while working for the Dragon God, and having more of an idea of what both of their end goals were. In a different game, it could definitely end with a horrible dubcon threesome/foursome with fake!FuChai and/or real FuChai. Which is much better than dubcon ShaoJiang/GouJian nope nope nope D:
I did not enjoy this!
FuChai spends a huge chunk of it intensely miserable because of Chenfeng's actions, and while it's not entirely his fault it's still not very fun or shippy. And even once things improve and they get together I felt like the basic problems of their relationship weren't really fixed: he wants to keep her protected and cosseted from the world, and she treats him like a beloved pet. Of all the love interests, he is the only one I felt got really uncomfortable about the gender and power aspects of her being King. And also the one where I felt most uncomfortable about the power she has over him! I should not end a romance thinking they can both do better!
I was worried he was going to get rapey, but he doesn't, in fact the route is weirdly sexless for a yandere repressed overprotective older brother type character (though he does get shirtless a lot). But the game repeatedly pokes at a different rape trauma Fuchai has so it was still kinda triggering!
Blech. Oh well, I enjoyed the other routes, and this certainly wasn't the worst thing I've ever played. Mostly I'm annoyed because I think ChenFeng had the potential to be a much more enjoyable love interest.

FuChai blames herself for ChenFeng's curse progressing, and is determined to heal his heart by paying more attention to him and making sure he's not worried about her. ShaoJiang doesn't understand putting herself in danger for a guard but FuChai says they've known each other since childhood and she sees him as family.
Once again Chenfeng doesn't remember anything about what happened. Also he has a lot of flamey looking black curse marks on his arm and stomach.
A messenger arrives a message from Wu ZiXu asking for FuChai to return to GuSu, and ChenFeng calms FuChai down and asks reasonable questions etc... and then STABS THE MESSENGER.
Chapter 11
OH YAY IT'S ANOTHER FLASHBACK TO FUCHAI'S WEDDING
Young Noble: My Queen, the wedding ceremony will be complete after we drink this cup of ceremonial wine.
"I cannot help but sigh seeing the excitement in that youngster's bright eyes."
FuChai is 16, how old is her husband??
She knows this is her father's will, and anyone picked by Wu ZiXu will be good, but is not interested and feels helpless.
ChenFeng: My Liege! A coup!
'The youngster' leans against her in fright.
UUURGH AND THEN CHENFENG GETS STABBED AND SHE CALLS FOR HIM AND WAKES UP AND IT WAS ALL A DREAM BUT HE IS ALL YANDERE AND CREEPY
It's not quite triggering me but it's definitely borderline, and it's triggering her. He's 'protecting' her by drugging her and isolating her from everyone else and not listening to anything she says. She realises the ChenFeng she knew is gone.
She manages to escape, but is weak from not eating the drugged food, and he catches up to her. She forces him to stay back by putting her sword to her throat.
Oh nooooooo, Fuchai, GouJian is not going to help D:
He disarms her and laughingly asks ChenFeng how he should be punished for losing his weapon. ChenFeng earnestly and coldly replies that he has failed his duty.
GOD. Like ChenFeng is cursed and miserable, but this is GouJian's DREAM. FuChai under his control? Weak, humiliated and dependent but safe?
Him being around makes the dynamic more interesting, and will hopefully stop ChenFeng getting too creepy. Though GouJian's line for 'too creepy' is...pretty far...
Zheng Dan's voice says "King of Yue, it seems you care for this woman, since you came so quickly to see her"
Leaning over his shoulder, laughing seductively...is another FuChai.
With no sprite because art is expensive. I realise they just re-used Zheng Dan's voice actor because actors are also expensive but that doesn't change the implication that FuChai's voice sounds like a tenor.
He turns back into Zheng Dan. When she angrily demands to know what's happened to Wu ZiXu, Zheng Dan says he's been imprisoned for insulting his king, then smiles and tells ChengFeng to bring back his head.
...kinda shipping FuChai/Wu ZiXu over the alternatives so far, game.
As GouJian takes her back to her room, Fuchai begs him to wake from his curse. Oh, Fuchai :(
GouJian: You can't even save yourself and you're bothered by this? I will tell you the truth on account of our past friendship. The day I entered the kingdom of Ng I swore to destroy it with my own two hands. I am happy I can gain the assistance of my Sovereign God. Ha, I even told my Sovereign God which direction YiGuang went in, I wouldn't count on him coming back :)
ChenFeng holds her as she collapses in misery, but only looks at her blankly as she orders him not to kill Wu ZiXu.
ChenFeng: I will take you back to the palace.
Zheng Dan: Have I permitted it? :/
ChenFeng, flatly: I beg my Sovereign God for his permission. After I send my Liege back, I will take Wu ZiXu's head.
Zheng Dan: Kneel down and beg me.
FuChai feels a humiliation deeper than any she has ever known.
Chapter 12
MORE RAPE FLASHBACK? REALLY? IS THAT NECESSARY??
FuChai wakes, feeling alone, empty and useless.
Fuchai: Why don't you just kill me? It's not like you care about me anyway.
ChenFeng: I only care about Ah-Yu and noone else.
FuChai: Care? Hahaha! What is the point of caring about a useless piece of garbage? I have nothing left now! Because of you!
ChenFeng: ...
FuChai: *sigh* I can't blame you. This is my fault, for trusting that rat GouJian. I hurt everyone, and harmed the Kingdom of Ng. Why don't you just kill me?
ChenFeng lays his head in her lap.
ChenFeng: You won't die while I am here.
FuChai: You don't understand...you can't, you have forgotten everything.
ChenFeng: I still remember my promise to abandon everything, even my life, to protect Ah-Yu.
FuChai: Ah-Yu died five years ago.
ChenFeng: You can be Ah-Yu again, as long as you let go of what does not belong to you.
FuChai: Is that what the dragon god wants?
ChenFeng: It is what I want.
FuChai: So what if I were to give up everything? As long as the blood of the royal family of Ng flows in my veins, the Dragon God will not let me go. I will become ashes in front of you. It's just a matter of time.
ChenFeng: ...then I will die with Ah-Yu.
FuChai: Fine. Let's die together.
This almost works for me.
A dark figure flashes past the window, leaving behind a strip of fabric: the code GouJian and FuChai used when they wanted to meet. On it are the words "Set fire during fifth watch".
For a moment, like a dumbass, I thought GouJian might have had a change of heart, but then FuChai realises one other person knows about this code: Wu ZiXu. Who is still very much looking like best boy right now.
Finding myself not wanting to keep going because it's making me tense, going to fast forward and scroll back until it gets fun. If it does.
After setting fire to her bedroom, FuChai escapes in a maid outfit Wu ZiXu provided, and she sees GouJian and ChenFeng freaking out that she might be in danger. SUCK IT, LOSERS.
Wu ZiXu has such a nice smile! He's so nice! He's totally going to die trying to take back the city again, isn't he :(
He asks if he should kill ChenFeng if it come to that, and she says he has to do what is necessary.
YEP. GOING TO DIE.
FuChai is consumed with despair and just keeps repeating to herself "Forget not my revenge...and break the sacred vow..."
ChenFeng attacks! He's visibly surrounded by an evil miasma. When she refuses to surrender, saying Ah-Yu is gone and she can only be Fuchai, he draws his sword shouting "It is because of you that Ah-Yu has become that monster!"
GongSun Yi knocks him out! GO GONGSUN YI.
FuChai has ChenFeng thrown back onto the enemy ship, which she got her guards to drill holes in while pretending to retreat.
They capture some followers, who do their best to kill themselves in captivity.
FuChai: If you tell us the dragon god's plans, we will save you.
Follower: We don't fear death!
FuChai: I was not referring to saving your life :) Chop off his injured hand before he tries to kill himself again.
Guard: *chops off hand*
FuChai: Chop off his legs too, we don't have time to pursue escapees. If he won't talk, we can cut off his tongue.
Follower: CHENFENG SAID TO MEET AT NANBO MOUNTAIN.
blah blah military strategy, fighting, death
She realises ChenFeng is being used as the centre of an evil magical array powering a monster currently eating the army of Ng...somehow? Even though he's not a mage or anything? Sure.
ChenFeng: If there's no Kingdom of Ng, there is no FuChai!
Really not being supportive of your girlfriend's career here, dude.
She tries and fails to stab him.
ChenFeng: Why did you not kill me on the ship?
FuChai: ...I don't know.
ChenFeng, pointing the sword at himself: I will give you another chance. Either return Ah-Yu to me, or kill me.
FuChai: I choose neither!
ChenFeng: What if I told you I killed Wu ZiXu? You knew this would happen yet you abandoned him just like you abandoned me. You can sacrifice anyone's life, even Ah-Yu's. You are a freak who lives only for the Kingdom of Ng!
FuChai is consumed with anger and despair. "ChenFeng's words are sharp like a sword that cut up my rationale that I tried so hard to hold together. The creature that is about to be born in front of it's disremembered brothers...is about to break out of it's cocoon."
The screen fills with the words KILL HIM
...it's tempting...
But walkthrough says no. Sigh.
She drops her sword and punches him, saying "Shut up! I won't kill you. Even if you forget, I will remember the years you accompanied me. I haven't become a cold blooded creature of hatred. I will snatch you back from the Dragon God!"
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu....
FuChai: I'm here. I've always been here.
He whispers "I don't...want to hurt you...again..." and smiles at her sadly, before stabbing himself in the chest.
The monsters approach, and she says "Fine. Let us die together."
And then YiGuang arrives on a dragon and defeats the monsters, and descends like a fairy, holding his hand towards FuChai. HELLO NEW BEST BOY.
YiGuang: Ah-Yu, are you alright??
FuChai: Please...save ChenFeng...
Chapter 14
Flashback:
YiGuang: Are you teasing ChenFeng again?
TengYu: So what if I am? He won't get angry. I treat him like a friend.
YiGuang: Other people treat him as your servant. When you get in trouble, he gets punished. Yet you are bullying him. ChenFeng really is pitiful.
TengYu: ...ChenFeng, come out. I have asked Mr SunWu to take you as his disciple. No one will dare bully you any more.
She wakes to YiGuang, who says none of this is her fault and that she and ChenFeng will be fine. Also, he saw Wu ZiXu alive in Gusu after ChenFeng had left to pursue FuChai, so while he might be dead by now, it wouldn't be at ChenFeng's hand.
YiGuang: I don't know why he lied. But the ChenFeng we knew, despite looking cold on the outside, was the kindest and most selfless amongst us.
FuChai: Maybe he wanted me to kill him, before the curse consumes him :(
Qi has been beaten back for now, and GongSun Yi begs FuChai to save ShaoJiang from being forced to marry Tian Heng.
FuChai wants to save Gusu, but they lack the power. If they rescue ShaoJiang first, they will have access to her dagger. Meanwhile YiGuang leaves again to try and find the body of the ding.
Ahaha GongSun Yi is dubious about FuChai's plan to "crossdress" as a maid to enter Qi unnoticed. Isn't it too humbling, as a grown man?
ShaoJiang happily hugs FuChai, but sadly shakes her head when FuChai offers another set of maids clothes, saying she has to stay and marry Tian Heng or her nephew will die.
FuChai just smiles and says noone will know ShaoJiang is gone...because FuChai will take her place. FuChai has faced a situation like this before, and can take care of Tian Heng, and once ShaoJiang has her daggers she will be unstoppable. FuChai clearly wants to save ShaoJiang from experiencing the same trauma she did.
FuChai: Go and return quickly, I will wait for you to save me.
Current standings: ShaoJiang > YiGuang > Wu ZiXu (loses points for being dead) > Gongsun Yi > GuCao > that lady from the village >>> ChenFeng >>>> GouJian
FuChai throws a violent tantrum to scare off the maid. I guess she ALSO sounds like ShaoJiang's high voiced voice actress then, or is a good actor haha.
Nnng Tiang Heng is all I Like A Girl With Spirit but then it turns out he knew she was a fake.
Tian Heng: You are eloquent, young, and clean looking, with the physique of a warrior. Could you be the sickly and weak King of Ng?
This is the first time anyone has pegged FuChai as faking her identity, and it's when she's 'cross-dressing' as a woman. This GAME.
He says he'll use the reputation for cruelty that Ng gained after the sacking of Chu to make it look like they set the palace on fire and killed the young King of Qi.
ShaoJiang appears on her phoenix to save FuChai, along with the Ng army, helped by GongSun Yi. Tian Heng accuses GongSun Yi of being a traitor.
I could have sworn ShaoJiang's nephew, the king, was supposed to be a baby but apparently he's 8? Anyway, GuCao saved him, and gets him to safety on the phoenix by cheerfully saying that flying on the big bird will be fun.
Tian Heng puts his sword to FuChai's neck and backs into a smoke filled room.
FuChai, passing out: ChenFeng...save me...
He shows up, half naked again for some reason. Her being in a wedding dress and him being injured makes her flash back to her wedding day, but then she realises he's leaning over her to protect her from a burning beam that has fallen across his back. The dark swirling marks cover his whole body now.
She drags him out of the room. "I am the King of Ng...surely I can save you..."
She hears people exclaim as a green dragon puts out the fire.
Chapter 15
Flashback:
Tengyu cries to her father, HeLu, that her dog Ah-Huang is dead. HeLu says she will have a new Ah-Huang who will live as long as her, and protect her, and play with her.
Just when I thought this route was done finding ways to squick me...
TengYu: I will give him a new name, and give him all my treats.
Present:
FuChai strokes the hair of the bandaged ChenFeng as he sleeps. ShaoJiang berates YiGuang for overdoing it helping the injured, and he says that as a doctor he knows the limits of the body.
YiGuang says he's not strong enough to cure ChenFeng, but Mage Yang is, and takes FuChai to the spiritual realm to claim the body of the ding etc.
FuChai: Please save ChenFeng. I will face any danger.
Mage Yang: You cannot save someone who does not wish to be saved.
Just before she enters the test, YiGuang says her emotions will be amplified, and the jade fish will follow her.
She finds herself in a misty forest. She calls out for Chenfeng, and follows a misty figure to find two ChenFengs arguing over who is truly protecting Ah-Yu.
Shadow A says he is returning her to the peaceful life she should have had before HeLu forced her to take on the mission of executing the god.
Shadow B says he is listening to her wishes, and that a life without freedom is another kind of torture.
Team Shadow B!
When FuChai shouts for them to stop, they say she can decide which of them will disappear and which will exist. The choices are "You are both ChenFeng" (correct) and "I will choose neither of you" (harsh!).
FuChai: The human heart always has contradictions.
Shadow: I live for Ah-Yu and die for Ah-Yu. You are my only responsibility and my longing. But Ah-Yu is the King of Ng, and only cares about Ng. I am but a shadow. The only thing I can do is protect you. But I do not know how to treat you kindly.
FuChai: You are not a shadow, you are my only pillar of support.
The Shadow smiles, but then curls in pain, consumed in miasma, saying "You cannot stay here! I will hurt you!"
The shadows stabs itself and she finds herself in a corridor. When ChenFeng appears she hugs him and he takes her hand to lead her to safety.
Fuchai: You always take care of my daily needs...yet I feel that we have not been this close for a long time.
ChenFeng: We have both grown up.
FuChai: We cannot return to the past but we can create a new future.
ChenFeng: ...Is that so?
He pushes her into the dark, saying "The person you seek is still far away".
DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER RAPE FLASHBACK
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, the people who want to harm you have been killed by me, so you do not have to be afraid.
He throws down her uncle FuGai's severed head.
Look I get how lying half-dead in a pool of your own blood while the princess you love and are meant to guard is raped would be traumatising but also I really am not here for FuChai being all "Oh no my rape traumatised him too, that's why he has been mistreating me". Like I do sympathise with ChenFeng on a Doylist level but on a Watsonian level did we REALLY have to go there, game??
She reminds him of the truth: that he did his best, but could not stop FuGai.
ChenFeng: Bullshit! I saved Ah-Yu!!
FuChai, hugging him: You did save me. Even though I encountered great humiliation, you still treated me like you usually did. You did not avoid me or treat me with any special consideration. Because of your bluntness, I dared face myself, and am able to love again.
The place where FuGai stabbed him starts to bleed.
ChenFeng: I wish you hadn't gone through all that pain...
FuChai: Me too...
He hugs her back, and they're in a beautiful outdoor scene.
ChenFeng: If you keep hugging me I won't get any farming done. But I can do something else if you want me to ;)
FuChai: I know this is the Spiritual Realm but it's not like you to say such things.
ChenFeng: Spiritual Realm? You don't recognise your own home? Have you been doing too much sewing?
She pushes away his concerned hand and explains firmly that she is the King of Ng, come to save him from the Dragon God's curse.
He laughs and says they are simple peasants who worship the River God. He pulls her close and kisses her cheek and she is drawn in by the happy life he's imagined for them. She starts to feel sleepy and I have the choice to stay awake or let her rest.
NO REST FOR CURSED KINGS
A fish jumps from the river and splashes her awake.
FuChai: Is this really your wish? I was destined to be unable to choose a normal farm life. The proud, stubborn and noble bloodline of the Kings of Ng flows in me. Do you really wish for me to be a little girl who can only depend on you?
ChenFeng becomes a shy looking teenager.
ChenFeng: ChenFeng is just a servant, and I dare not offend the Princess.
FuChai: Who said that you are a servant? Father said that you will protect me, and play with me. That makes you my friend forever.
ChenFeng: ChenFeng does not have the right to be friends with the princess. Please do not put me in a difficult spot.
FuChai: If you don't believe me, we can strike palms as a promise. No matter whether you are rich or poor, Ah-Yu will be friends with ChenFeng. We will support and love each other, and never abandon the other. Of course, I can bully you but not vice-versa, because I am petty and remember grudges.
He thinks this is a weird promise, but agrees. He smiles, and grows taller than her (he was shorter when she was 9 and he was 12??)
She kisses him, realising her feelings for him.
ChenFeng, blushing: Now it is not just a cheap friendship. Ah-Yu is really greedy.
FuChai: It's not like just only realised that today.
ChenFeng: Thank you for finding me. But the curse will be here soon, you have to leave.
FuChai: Come with me.
ChenFeng: I can't...I have to defeat all those delusions you saw to regain my whole soul.
FuChai: Then I will stay with you and fight.
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, your battlefield is on the outside. The person I love is the noble King of Ng. She has to break the Sacred Vow, rescue the people of Ng, and believe that we will reunite in the real world.
FuChai: I believe in you.
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, stay safe.
As everything dissolve in light, she feels something soft on her lips.
Ok that was really cute! I think the basic arc of this route is solid, it just has the ratio of "Love interest is unpleasant" to "love interest is endearing" way off.
Chapter 16
Now with the support of Qi and Lu, FuChai returns to Ng to take back her city.
She goes to check on the sleeping ChenFeng, dark runes moving around his body during his internal fight. She doesn't like how his stubble feels and decides it would not be elegant to say goodbye with him looking dishevelled, so orders hot water to clean him up.
FuChai: I never knew cleaning someone up is so troublesome. ChenFeng, you are very capable.
ChenFeng: ...
FuChai: After the coup, I was afraid of being touched, and yet did know how to clean myself up...before you recovered I was very unkept. You are the only person I've never felt afraid of. Even when you don't say anything, you are always able to comfort and support me. There, you are all clean. That is what I call handsome.
She curls up beside him.
FuChai: I was give you many fun snacks in the future, and bring you to many fun places. I will wait for you, so you have to come back. I will share some of my strength in your dreams.
Battle against the dragon god! Wu ZiXu's severed head D: Zheng Dan threatens to drown the city.
GouJian: Ah-Yu, we have you outnumbered! You let me return to Yue so I will give you a chance to live! If you surrender I promise to protect the citizens of Gusu!
FuChai: Over our dead body!
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, leave this to me. Go do what you must, I believe in you!
FuChai: We appoint ChenFeng as General!
She rushes to the altar, where ShaoJiang and YiGuang are almost at their limit. Seeing her people fight for their lives, she is determined they will not lose, and pierces the seal on her chest with her own hands (ow!)
She is summoned again to the spiritual realm. When asked to what end the righteousness of her heart leads her, she says "Although the human heart is weak it also has strength. If people can strengthen their hearts, the heavens will give them great virtue."
Mage Yang smiles and says she has reached the pinnacle of virtue, and she receives the power of the body of the ding.
She returns to see the monsters vanish in the rain. An injured ChenFeng limps over and says he has injured the King of Yue and beaten back his army. YiGuang breaks the vow and the dragon god turns to ashes.
FuChai and ChenFeng hug, bedraggled but beautiful.
FuChai: I caught you.
ChenFeng: Yes, I'm back :)
Epilogue:
TengYu: Heehee, ShaoJiang says in her letter she is ignoring GuCao's proposal.
ChengYu: I remember the King of Qi really likes GuCao...no, I should refer to him as the King of Ng now. Could the princess still be hung up on Ah-Yu?
TengYu: What's there to be hung up on? The King of Ng, FuChai, has "passed away". Now the hegemonic King is GuCao. What girl would not admire him? She is just being shy. Also, GouJian figured out I faked my death and asked GuCao if I'm alright.
ChengFeng: I should have killed him back then :)
TengYu: Hehe are you jealous?
ChengFeng: I'm only afraid he'll search high and low for you, and that would mean trouble for us. But Ah-Yu is mine. I will never be afraid of losing you, no matter who comes to find me.
TengYu: Yah, yah, what's yours is yours. Just like you are mine.
YiGuang comes to join them, but they will be alone again at home that night.
The End
I take it back I do have a problem with the dynamic.
Their relationship is so broken! It starts out with her treating him like a beloved pet she takes for granted, and him being consumed with resentment that she's king. He THEORETICALLY works through his resentment but then she's just not king any more so it's not clear he would have handled it long term, and she just goes to treating him like a beloved pet she doesn't take for granted. Blech! I feel like both of them could do better!
I mean we don't even know what this FuChai is doing with her life, beyond reliving childhood memories of hanging out with her two best friends.
I didn't mind her choosing the quiet life so much on the YiGuang path, because it was established early on that that was something that FuChai wanted, not as a denial of reality or return to childhood but as a new future they were creating together. And I didn't mind GouJian trying to control and 'protect' her so much because the game doesn't validate him at all and he's forced to accept her being his King.
Part of me feels like writing a version that works out in a way I find satisfying because it absolutely had potential. The GouJian route handled some similar issues in a much better way, and ChenFeng is a much less terrible guy!
Bad End:
*sigh* Let's get this over with.
FuChai goes to stab ChenFeng, then stops herself, because that's what the Dragon God wants.
Ooh after two bad choices I get new and different choices!
In the spiritual realm, instead of doggedly defending her, ChenFeng becomes consumed by the thought that he is useless to her, that he should just take her away from everything.
She runs from him and shouts for YiGuang to save her.
She wakes to a concerned YiGuang, who pulled her out of the curse dream. He reassures her that they will defeat the dragon god and save ChenFeng.
The battle happens much the same.
ChenFeng drags himself out of bed to defend her from Zheng Dan, but then attacks "FuChai".
The only way to defeat the dragon god is to stop ChenFeng. She stabs him as he stabs her too. They both start to crumble into ash and water.
ChenFeng: Ah-Yu, the one I love most...is you...
The last thing she hears is YiGuang breaking the vow and turning the dragon god into a small white snake.
GouJian continues his attack. ShaoJiang bursts into tears and YiGuang sadly says "They both went back to where they belong. We should end this war."
Epilogue:
YiGuang says he hasn't seen ShaoJiang for a long time. He invited her to visit him for the Autumn ceremony. The situation in Qi is getting bad enough that she may have to flee with her nephew.
ShaoJiang: I wish to do that...but it is not up to me. GouJian is supporting the Jiang clan in our opposition of the Tian clan...I am really worried he may suggest us having a political marriage.
CONGRATS GAME A NEW WAY TO SQUICK ME
MAYBE GUCAO/SHAOJIANG ISN'T SO BAD
YiGuang: It might not be bad to have the protection of the King of Yue.
ShaoJiang: Even though he rebuilt Gusu he is a despicable traitor!
YiGuang: Rebuilding the city exactly as it was when Ah-Yu was around cost a lot more than making a new city... So, what happened to that snake?
ShaoJiang: It's very silly, not much different to an ordinary animal. Oh, it's on Lord Ng's grave.

The one thing I did like about this route is getting to see more of what was going on with ChenFeng and GouJian while working for the Dragon God, and having more of an idea of what both of their end goals were. In a different game, it could definitely end with a horrible dubcon threesome/foursome with fake!FuChai and/or real FuChai. Which is much better than dubcon ShaoJiang/GouJian nope nope nope D:
