Hypnosis Mic
Jul. 8th, 2021 12:06 amA friend got me to watch the first episode of Hypnosis Mic and...hoo boy.
Below are my lightly edited reactions to an anime set in a Japan where violence has been replaced by TERRIBLE HOMOEROTIC RAP BATTLES.
I can't be bothered uploading the couple of screenshots I took because they're not great, instead watch the trailer.
"As soon as man is born he begins to die" is a little ominous as an ep 1 title
Woman on tv: Sorry to interrupt but we have taken over and you now live in a matriarchy with weapons replaced by hynposis microphones.
Everyone watching: *keeps going with their lives looking entirely ambivalent*
The rap in these opening credits. It is not good. I quite like good rap and hip hop and this is not that. The one light keeping me going is that one of them had maths equations on the screen.
I know just enough Japanese to suspect "Ichi-nii" is a 'one-two' pun but not be sure.
Ok I can accept that legal weapons have all been replaced by microphones, sure, and understand that this would make gun access very difficult, but why are illegal street gangs not still murdering each other with baseball bats?
How many of these characters have heterochromia
I'm sorry I know it's missing the point but I want these big boobed matriarchal ladies to step on me
This has the energy of an elite beat agents style rhythm game
"I am a gangster, you're a hamster", screen helpfully shows the word gangster and an image of a hamster
also lol so many 'fucks' very gritty
I am sure the military guy using actual explosives and threatening people with his fists is going to resort to rap but for now am imagining him as like, the one holdout, who's all "Why is everyone fighting with rap. Are they aware that explosives and fists still work?" and when people rap at him he just punches them/blows them up.
The scenes where hardened criminals grit their teeth intimidatingly then all draw out microphones are still just...it's something.
Also the over the top visuals when people rap make me think of yugio trying to make card games cool except now it's rap battles. This has lots of merch too as I recall.
Also, keep thinking about the geopolitical situation. Like Japan is already a country with very little gun violence that doesn't do a lot of military violence. But did this also happen in the US? Are there like drone strikes playing rap at people in the middle east?
Is this a metaphor for the post ww2 forced demilitarisation of Japan and does that make the big boobed matriarchal sexy ladies a metaphor for like...colonialism???? Also does this go all the way down to childhood, are school bullies rapping at each other?
Very sad. Army man started rapping.
Also people still smoke?? Maybe it's all vitamin cigarettes or something.
This is someone's masters thesis right here: *Insert screenshot of the line "Gang, police, and navy, all together, nah mean?" with shoddy CGI of three tough looking dudes singing into microphones on illusory water in front of a city skyline, with the words 'nah mean' floating in giant letters at the top and bottom of the screen*
The glasses dude (navy?) just lit his cigarette by leaning very close to white hair dude (gang?) and it was pretty shippy. Everyone so far seems divided into shippy triads which I am here for.
The way eyes are drawn is interesting, the irises are kinda goat-like and there's little coloured blobs on the eyelashes. Also the shading is very unusual: rainbowy. like bismuth or chrome.
I am disappointed at the complete lack of general matriarchal vibes. Where is my femdom dystopia where pretty men are forced to dance and sing to survive??
ahaha pro violence terrorist with a KNIFE
Long haired sensei with his two mentally unstable boys is sure a dynamic
omg the policeman has a BATON
ahahaha but the doctor and boys rush in front to protect him with their mics and then OH NO the terrorist brings out an ILLEGAL MIC. I started laughing so hard I had to pause.
The depressed dude's name is DOPPAMINE???
His bff is a host with a phobia of women who flips from flirting with a woman and telling her to come to his club for a good time to suddenly cowering behind Doppamine in terror because GIRL
aw we didn't get to see what the illegal mic actually did
The cgi dancing is very Love Live and not at all suited to rapping
AND I FINISHED IT
That was definitely something. I do not regret watching it. But it was not good.
I think my favourite character is Doppamine, he is very moe, and I like that his microphone is a mobile phone and his schtick is that he is overworked and depressed about it
also
his name
is DOPPAMINE
I don't even know what anyone else's name is
Oh wait, Ichi-nee
wait are all the names terrible puns I am looking it up now
The bros are named one-son, two-son, three-son, and are actual brothers. So I am judging their parents pretty hard. Does explain why they all have heterochromia, I guess.
Violent soldier boy is half American haha of course. Also his quote is from Martin Luther King um ok then. Hifumi's name is literally written as 'one two three', I like that.
"She was brainwashed into joining the Party by one of Ramuda Amemura's clones, using the true Hypnosis Mic." The worldbuilding for this show is certainly something. But the wiki did not mention either of the puns I noticed, so there's probably others that passed me by, which is tragic. Because his name is actually just 'Doppa'? Where did the 'mine' come from, subtitlers??
Also in case you were thought I was exaggerating about big boobed matriarchal ladies
Why does she look like this. Is this show not aimed at fujoshis? Like there's generically sexy because it's anime, and then there's designed as fanservice for entirely the wrong demographic.
All women OTHER than the Sexy Matriarchy Ladies totally fawn and squeal over the male characters. There do not appear to be any female rappers, police etc. Only woman in the hospital is a nurse. I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't a MATRIARCHY.
