I've played nearer to the end, but I can see myself putting off totally finishing it so I can keep exploring and manipulating the world with something to aim for.

So, first: something I forgot to say before is that it is quite sexist and racist! It doesn't feel malicious or deliberate to me, just a lot of thoughtless white gamer dude humour and tropes, but every now and then I hit something new and go "really, game?"

But I am otherwise quite enjoying the game.

It continues to keep the gathering/crafting/fighting loops varied enough to stay interesting. And while I've played a bunch of games with base building components before it's the first I can think of where I've really gotten into it. The combination of not having to focus on having bases but them being helpful when I can be bothered thinking about it, everything being set in the same large but finite world, and all the little ways you can customise things, means that over time I've built up increasingly complex and aesthetically pleasing battle arenas, NPC housing, fishing holes etc.

I was initially put off by the switch to Hardmode, which permanently adds more difficult monsters and new bosses etc instead of adding new areas, but now I really like how it means I can still use my existing structures and pathways and just make them better. Which for me generally means making them RAINBOW. It helps that Hardmode adds a rainbows and unicorns themed biome full of deadly pixies and pretty flowers attempting to slowly swallow up the world. Killing them gives lots of useful materials :D

Here's my base:
Screenshot from Terraria, which uses 2d pixel art. A three story squat rectangle with a rounded roof, all made of glass, filled with crafting stations, banners, torches and chests all arranged to roughly form a horizontal rainbow gradient. The three characters visible are a brown furry woman, an old man in a party hat, and my character, who is wearing a glowing orange wedding dress, holding a brass balloon, and has a pet lizard and glowing pixie. There is a white rope vanishing upwards, and the background is pine trees and little coloured balloons.

You can't tell, but the torches on the roof and my glowing pixie pet cycle through all the colours of the rainbow :D Also yes I have a green beard and am wearing a flaming orange wedding dress, this has no stats benefit it just makes me feel fabulous.

And here's the base I made for the clothier, cat, and (sigh) witch doctor.
A Terraria screenshot of a lake with a cave underneath filled with vines and growing plants, with a waterfall down one side. It's divided into three houses with wooden walls with glass windows, tables, chairs and light sources, as well as a piano and some books. Visible are my characters, the masked witch doctor, cat, and clothier. All but me are wearing party hats. The background is big jungle vines with little balloons floating up.

The little balloons and party hats are because the Party Girl is throwing a party. I'm still not sure what, if any, useful effect that has, but it is cute.

I tried out Terraria and got frustrated by the learning curve/the fact that the NPC guide doesn't actually explain how to do things, but I wound up noping out when the wiki told me how the female NPCs get "PMS" because yeah, "really, game?" covers it.
