Terraria for those who dislike dying
May. 20th, 2020 03:44 pmTerraria is a classic survival/exploration/crafting game that recently had an update which makes it friendlier for people who'd rather focus on exploration and crafting than combat. It's available on pretty much every platform, though I think this update is currently just for desktop, and often goes on sale very cheap.
I had a lot of fun playing Terraria a few years ago on the easiest setting it had then, but stopped when I hit a point in the boss progression which adds a timed component that made me anxious.
But the new "journey" mode lets you turn that part off! It even lets you turn on God Mode and become unkillable!
So I've started again in Journey mode and am having a great time.
The easier combat, ability to float etc makes it more fun to explore, and I've noticed some other general changes which make the game more fun, like teleport pads. And it's just a really well made game if you enjoy exploring, gathering, crafting, and making monsters go splat.
Something worth noting is that while a lot of the game is fairly cute/pretty, it does have horror elements, including zombies (which don't bother me for some reason??) and bugs (which do).
Also, while there are NPCs with very limited dialogue, it has no plot. While the basic gameplay is a lot like Starbound, the game structure is basically 2D minecraft with a more structured set of goals to pursue, mainly boss battles. Having the NPCs around does make it feel friendly, and it's fun making them cute little houses. You can also play multiplayer but I haven't tried it.
Finally, while it's mostly fun to try and figure things out on your own, this is one of those games where I end up having ten wiki pages open as I play.
