Masterlist and guide
More angsty ninjas! Except Sasuke, who wasn't very angsty, and was cuter than I expected.
Genya:
So all I know about this guy is that he's very laid-back in a sleepy, lazy sort of way. Apparently in this Event he's been told to kill Masamune, I guess it'll add to the emotional resonance that I'm doing Masamune's romance right now.
MC and Genya good naturedly tease each other. She works making medicines for Masamune.
Shigezane and Genya argue about whether the fact that Genya previously saved Shigezane's life, when he was being Masamune's body double, means Genya gets to eat all the manju.
*googles manju* Oh man, red bean steamed buns? I want one :( *makes self jam with toast, which is not the same*
Oh wow Sakuya and Genya are twins?? Genya frowns at their latest orders and Sakuya says "Don't forget that you're a shinobi of Iga. See your mission through. Or else. Don't be like that Sakuya :(
The next day Genya walks out of a meeting with Kojuro and is evasive with MC, until she forces him to tell her what's going on: he's been ordered to kill Masamune.
MC: What are you going to do D:
Genya: I don't know :(
He keeps going out, MC trusts that he knows what he's doing and says she'll be waiting with his favourite meal.
Genya: Any time the goin' gets tough I'll be thinking of dinner :)
MC: Good. Be careful, you.
He's spying on the Asahina, who are the ones who ordered the hit.
Meanwhile MC bumps into Sakuya in the forest.
Sakuya: I never thought I'd encounter a fugitive here.
MC: Well you have. Bye.
Sakuya: ...
MC: *throws a knife at him*
Sakuya: ...I'll kill you next time. *leaves*
Aw. That goes in the "good interactions with otome in-laws" pile.
Ohhh...he doesn't know about Genya/MC?? I guess Genya is still pretending to be a good Iga ninja to everyone.
Genya: It'll probably be fine.
MC: He said he'd kill me next time?
Genya: Then make sure he doesn't find you next time. Anyway, weren't you going to make me dinner?
MC: Sorry, I was more worried about DYING.
Genya: I'll let it slide, under the circumstances. And you can make it up to me ;)
They cheerfully make out for a bit then he says he's exhausted.
MC: Are you really ok? If you need my help, don't hold back.
Genya: Told you, everything's gonna be fine :)
Genya sneaks out and, having a bad feeling, MC follows.
Oh noooo Genya why are you in Masamune's chambers D:
Masamune: Aren't you going to kill me?
Genya, holding a knife but not moving: I figured you were awake.
Masamune: I had an inkling the Asahina were trying to have me killed. But I didn't think you'd be the one to come.
Genya: I'm a ninja after all, orders are absolute.
Masamune: It's taken you a long time to carry them out, though, hasn't it?
Genya explains that he's been trying to find some other solution. But now that Sakuya knows MC's location he's out of time. But he can't bring himself to do it, aww.
MC, listening, is consumed with guilt, and sneaks away to pack up her things to save Genya from the consequences of protecting her any further. She tells Genya she's going to go visit the village, but he sees through it, and pulls her close, asking her not to go.
But she does, and in the middle of the forest she gets stopped by Sakuya.
Sakuya: So that's your plan? Then I have no more use for you. *throws knife* I don't see any point in you resisting.
She silently agrees he's better at assassination than her. But her only goal is escape.
Ok Sakuya's little smile when she successfully throws a knife at him is pretty hot. But he defeats her in the end...only for Genya to show up to save her.
Sakuya: Took you long enough.
Ganya: This was always about getting to me, wasn't it? But lay a hand on her an' I'm not gonna be able to play nice any more.
As they fight, Sakuya gives Genya a little "You're not totally awful at knives" smile too. Genya gains the upper hand, but Sakuya just says "Kill the Date lord" and vanishes.
MC and Genya are sweetly "I don't want to see bad things happen to the one I love" and not sure what to do next.
The next day they present Kojuro and Masamune with the truth, and their plan: kill the Asahina guy who made the contract.
Oh wow I assumed Genya would assassinate the guy, but no, the Date are going to war with the Asahina as a clan! Genya does also assassinate the guy during the battle though. He and Kojuro have a nice moment of mutual respect and concern.
Masamune: Thanks for the reconnaissance, it helped a lot with the battle.
Genya: Enough stuffy stuff I just care about money remember :)
Seeing that MC is still feeling stressed about Sakuya, Genya takes MC to his favourite resting spot under a tree, to relax.
Genya: I'm no good at decisions. Kill Masamune or lose you...good thing I didn't have to decide between you in the end. This is why I never wanted to hold anyone or anything dear.
But he smiles at her, and holds her tight.
In his letter he talks about "choosing between people he loves", wasn't getting strong Masamune/Genya/MC vibes but I'm open to it!
Kyoichiro:
So this guy's a sort of robin hood figure with an alter ego as a merchant, which sounds like a change from all the samurai and ninjas!
MC works in his shop and while he's a little cold and grumpy they're pretty cute together.
That night, Kyoichiro goes out as the thief Goemon, only to be confronted by...Hideyoshi! Who got Goemon's printed note that he'd be hitting this warehouse?? WHY DO JAPANESE FICTIONAL THIEVES DO THIS.
...ok I googled when Japan got the printing press, and it was influenced by Hideyoshi after his invasion of Korea, which happens later, and because of the large alphabet moveable type wasn't really a thing in Japan until the 19th century. So I guess Kyoichiro hand-carves woodblocks to announce his intentions lol.
Anyway, Hideyoshi says he wanted to see Goemon for himself, and offer him a deal. They both have a sort of smarmy smug fake friendliness vibe.
Aww MC is cuddling Kyoichiro's fox, Raita, while he's out. But Raita jumps up to greet Sasuke when he visits. Sasuke doesn't remember MC even though he was her childhood first love, aw.
Sasuke works for Shingen and has brought a letter from him about a possible alliance with MC's village, which is currently still aligned with Nobunaga.
Hmm...Nobunaga is awful but in the end he defeats Shingen...
"I knew Sasuke visiting would put him in a bad mood since he loathes ninjas"
Me: Hey! MC is a ninja! ...then again, Radiance!MC despises samurai...
Kyoichiro: You and I may be lovers, but we're still our own people with our own lives to live.
Me: Aw, he values her independence!
MC: Oh ;_;
She wants to make it clear to him that whatever deals her village makes, she's committed to staying with him, but he interrupts to grumpily ask when they're leaving, and she's very happy to realise he's coming with her.
"An enlightening experience for a bumpkin like you"?? HEY. Oh it's the hard drinking, womanising warrior monks, currently shaking down travellers for a toll.
Kaede (KAEDEEEE) invites them to a village that's supposed to not exist any more and Kyoichiro is visible rattled.
Kyoichiro: This is where I failed to die. 'Suke saved me, and that temple nursed me back to health.
MC: He saved your life too, huh?
Kyoichiro: You never ask about my past.
MC: I want to know, but I'm willing to wait until you're ready to tell me.
Kyoichiro: ;_; *pulls her into a hug*
MC: [something in untranslated Japanese]
Kyoichiro: You have me beat. How do you always manage to astound me?
MC: That's something you'll have to get used to ;)
I mean, I hope not, I don't speak Japanese...
They affectionately tease each other. And then Kaede shows up and it turns out Sasuke invited her, not the other way around, and he admits there's more to Shingen's request than meets the eye. Kyoichiro storms off.
He tells MC that just as Shingen is courting MC, Hideyoshi is courting Goemon to work with Nobunaga. He was going to make his decision after he knew hers, but now wants to turn back so he doesn't 'hinder her worth'. I feel like I'm missing something, but regardless, MC feels like she has to choose between him and her village.
She goes back home with Kyoichiro, even though Kaede points out they may never see each other again :(
Locals: Nobunaga is awful to us common folk but at least we have our champion Goemon!
Kyoichiro is summoned to meet with Nobunaga and "invited" to stay in the castle: if Goemon strikes while he's imprisoned, he's proven innocent, but if not, he'll be considered guilty.
And then Sakuya shows up to kill a worried MC.
Hideyoshi: Have I interrupted you two at a tender moment? ;)
Sakuya: No *bows politely and leaves*
Hideyoshi's come with a red paper crane from Kyoichiro, which MC knows is a symbol of his commitment to help the vulnerable.
MC: I take it he's trapped at the castle, then?
Hideyoshi: I'd like to help, but it's difficult. I'm sorry :(
MC: Thank you for passing on the message. It looks like it's my turn to save him, now.
Hideyoshi: Are you prepared to cross some very dangerous bridges for his sake?
MC: I would walk through fire if that's what it took to save him.
Hideyoshi: Then you're going to have to become Ishikawa Goemon in his place.
And so she does (carving her own wood-block lol), and Kyoichiro is released by Nobunaga.
(It just occurred to me to google Ishikawa Goemon and he's basically the Japanese Robin Hood. And was assassinated for trying to kill Hideyoshi which is...not the dynamic here but never mind)
MC: Welcome home handsome :D
Kyoichiro: What would you have done if you got caught?! I won't have you coming under suspicion because of me.
MC: You're my light. I'll become your shadow if that's what it takes. I make my own decisions, remember?
Flashback:
MC: Why are you risking yourself so much to help Kyoichiro?
Hideyoshi: Haven't you heard anything from him? *suggestive smile*
Flashback^2:
Kyoichiro: Lord Hideyoshi is courting me as Goemon.
...that's pretty shippy...
Hideyoshi: I just don't have the heart to hate a thief that helps the vulnerable. I've experienced poverty first hand, after all. Besides, I don't want this to be the end of Master Naramkumi ;)
(end flashback)
MC: And coming from him I believed him.
Kyoichiro: Is this your way of saying you've fallen for Hideyoshi? >:(
Me: Pretty sure she's saying he's fallen for you, dude.
MC: No he's just...the sort of man you can serve in good faith, knowing he'd treat you as an equal.
Kyoichiro: Trust you to pick a third option. We've played right into that reprobate scoundrel's hands. Who knows how many steps ahead that man is thinking....but I must admit I find him trustworthy myself.
Kyoichiro: MC, you've lent strength to my convictions, and I'm going to tell you the truth about everything soon. You chose to side with me at great personal cost, and for that I intend to wrest a future where we can be together, everything else be damned.
He steals from the corrupt monks opposing Nobunaga as a message/thank you to Hideyoshi, but tells MC he values his freedom too much to serve any lord. Then he tells her about the unforgivable orders he followed without question past as a ninja.
MC: You must have had your reasons.
Kyoichiro: None whatsoever. I thought protecting the man I served was my raison d'etre- and in the end, I killed him too. I sealed the tomb of my past, became a merchant...and then I met you. I cherish the life I have with you, but at times I wonder if I deserve it, running from the past as I am.
MC:L You're not running from anything. You atone for those sins with every act you perform as Goemon. Your dedication to helping others is proof of the man you are inside.
She tries to get across how important he is to her, and he pulls her into a hug and does the same, and they vow to start their new future together.
Sasuke why are you watching them make out from a tree...
"Sasuke's plan to make Kyoichiro face his past and thereby learn how to be happy seems to be working. He pulls Raita up onto his knee and roughly pets the fur between the fox's ears with his gigantic hands."
Ok then.
The epilogue implies Kyoichiro doesn't want to have sex until MC initiates it, which is very un-otome-LI of him but sweet.
Sasuke:
We start with MC telling Shingen that the Iga have found out she's here and will be coming after her. She wants to stay, but doesn't want to risk Takeda lives so will leave if he wants.
Shingen: Do what you can for our people, as a member of the Takeda clan :)
MC is incredibly grateful to have his acceptance and support. Aw.
Sasuke tells her not to run off again and she says she's past that, giving some idea of how his path goes.
She decides the best thing she can do to express her gratefulness to the Takeda is help an impassive and unusually brown healer called Kansuke make medicine.
Kansuke: Does it not tire you, being with Sasuke, what with all the drinking and sweets?
MC: Aw, Kansuke is worried about me!
MC is frustrated that Sasuke doesn't want her to help him and Yukimura with a scouting mission, and feels like he's alwayts trying to discourage her from using her ninja skills. He asks her to instead come with him to a part of town where Shingen houses widows and orphans. He plays with the kids, reassures the women, fixes leaky roofs etc. MC gets roped into teaching origami, it's pretty cute. Sasuke says she's the one who makes the medicine he brings and everyone is very grateful. It occurs to MC that there's more than one way to help her community.
Sasuke's nice enough, and affectionate, but in an "older brother ruffling hair" way, I'm not really shipping it. While he's off at war, MC reassures worried staff and villagers.
That night word arrives that Sasuke and Yukimura are hemmed in without enough resources. But the castle needs everyone to defend it against attack. And so MC sneaks to help them alone.
Sasuke is pissed that she put herself in so much danger, but she argues that she has to do what she can as a member of the Takeda Clan. Yukimura argues that they should just be grateful she showed up, guess he's less convinced women shouldn't be in battle when it's someone else's girlfriend lol.
Sasuke: he's right, I should have thanked you first.
And then she tells them how many enemy soldiers she saw on the way over, and Sasuke persuades Yukimura that they have to do a partial retreat. Sasuke doesn't want MC to risk herself any further, but she persuades him to let her help as the guide. She says "What have I said about not treating me like a child?", but is happy to know he trusts her as an equal.
...Shadow!MC and Yukimura make a good team, I kinda ship it...
MC doesn't want Sasuke acting as a distraction while everyone else escapes the siege, but he repeats her words: I just want to do what I can to help the Takeda.
MC: ...ok. But you better come back to me in one piece, or else!
The battle is won, but Sasuke hasn't returned. MC is worried, but convinced he will come back, and continuing her duty to heal and reassure the people of Takeda.
Mini Sasuke: Dad's home!
Ha! I was wondering how they'd handle having two characters called Sasuke (both based on different versions of the same mythological ninja): 'Mini Sasuke' is Saizo's ten year old apprentice. And the love interest Sasuke is his dad, apparently???
The moment she sees Sasuke, injured but smiling, MC bursts into tears.
Later, he says he'd been wanting her to find a place of her own, away from being a ninja. But he's realised she'd already become a full fledged member of the Takeda on her own.
Takeda: It made my fussing over you being a ninja insignificant. I'm sorry, my desire to cherish you makes me overprotective, and I know that's not fair.
He gives her a tender half-smile and she's overcome by affection and surprises him with a kiss.
Sasuke: I hope you know what you're in for, I won't hold back forever.
MC: :D :D
Yeah I think she'll cope, Sasuke.
I'm not usually into overprotective lug big brother types but that was pretty cute. And Sakuya didn't try to kill her even once.
And that's the end of the event!
Hmm...do I want to pay for any of the epilogues...let's say no, and see if I change my mind before the event finishes.

Date: 2020-04-02 02:29 pm (UTC)The Kyoichiro epilogue is mostly a long sex scene that starts after she goes to his room in order to ravish him. It is indeed unusual in how much initiative she takes and how much she seems to know what she's doing.

Date: 2020-04-07 12:33 pm (UTC)I could see Kyoichiro and MC having an open relationship that is based on respecting each other's autonomy and both of them occasionally having sex with Hideyoshi while remembering that there are limits to how much you can trust him
Yes! They seem like a couple who would be open to that sort of thing.
