Masterlist of links and content notes
This was gentle and a little bittersweet.
I've heard this path is especially sad FOR THIS GAME so let's see how I do. (EDIT: Pfft. The Kagiha path set a pretty high bar for sad and this path doesn't come close)
Fighting Over:
This is a Monshiro/Karasuba shared scene, and involves the two of them non-con snuggling her on a couch. Monshiro genuinely doesn't understand the concept of physical boundaries, especially since Beniyuri is too embarrassed to explain things in blunt terms, but Karasuba is just being a creep and eggs Monshiro on to touch her more. She keeps saying stuff like "But you should only do this with someone you REALLY like" and not getting the point when they both say "But I DO really like you".
In her inner monologue, Beniyuri says she doesn't really mind, partly because it's nice seeing Karasuba encourage Monshiro to express herself more, but implicitly because she is in fact kind of into it. I very much doubt there'll be space for a Monshiro/Karasuba/Beniyuri threesome by the end of this story, and I wouldn't want it to happen without all of them getting a better handle on consent and boundaries. But I kinda ship it >.>
I hope this is just some skeeziness bleeding over from Karasuba's path and not a sign that Monshiro will be too dubconny on his path. Just the right level of dubconniness, please, game!
Attracted by the Sweet Smell:
Beniyuri is secretly thinking that she enjoys being so close to Monshiro, but tries to explain to him that it's not generally accepted to be so close to a girl. His logic is: "I like you. You like me. Touching is nice." and all she has as counterargument is "It's not how Japanese people are supposed to behave!", which he does not find very compelling.
Beniyuri: Are there other people you like in the manor?
Monshiro: I like being with all of them better than being alone. But I like you the best.
Beniyuti: Did you have anyone to talk to before?
Monshiro: Not for long.
So all he's had to talk to is confused amnesiac spirits passing through? For ten years? D: What about Kagiha and Usagi? Did the three of them just not talk to each other? That is what Hikage would have wanted :(
Beniyuri thinks about how lonely that must have been, and that maybe she should let him do whatever he wants while they're together. BENIYURI NO. YOU CAN COMFORT THE CUTE WOOBIE AND STILL HAVE BOUNDARIES.
But luckily he cares about her welfare, and asks her if she enjoys their time together too. When she says yes, he happily hugs her and she is internally all "HE DOESN'T MEAN IT IN A SEXY WAY HE CAN'T HELP BEING A HOT GUY"
He slides off his mask to nuzzle her hair and talk about how nice she smells. She makes a token resistance but mostly just wishes she could see his face.
Shoujo Manga:
A general scene this time.
Everyone is very bored rereading the same books over and over, so Monshiro is pleased to find a shoujo manga.
Hiokage: Shoujo...manga?
Karasuba: It's for girls.
Monshiro: So I can't read it? :(
Karasuba: I didn't say that. Some books are just good. Ooh, and this one has a hot kissing scene :D
Kagiha: Girls like that???
Karasuba: Yes they do. Sometimes juicier stuff too :D *flips through looking for porn*
Monshiro: Juicier?
Hikage: You don't need to know.
Yes, Hikage, preserve the innocence of the 17 year old you've been making LIVE ALONE IN A MANSION OF GHOSTS since he was SEVEN.
Monshiro: No, explain kissing to me, Hikage.
Hikage: D: D: D:
Karasuba: Heh this girl is kissing a guy she doesn't even like. Guess girls like dubcon :D But kissing's no big deal after all.
Kagiha: Yes it is :(
Hikage: You're all making a big deal about nothing.
Karasuba: You're just a tsundere, pretending not to care but wanting to sweep Beniyuri off her feet and smooch her ;)
Hikage: D:<
Monshiro: Why is he eating her ear?
Karasuba: It's a way of expressing affection!
Oh god someone needs to give this kid a sex ed lesson but why does it have to be Karasuba. Kaghiha probably has a nine year old's idea of understanding of sex himself, but is better at covering for it with his neurotypical(ish) 19 year old's social skills.
Beniyuri: What are you guys all talking about?
Karasuba: Come see :D
Hikage and Kagiha: NO
Beniyuri: Ah, guy stuff.
Monshiro: Beniyuri, can I eat your ears?
When Were You There?:
An incredibly sweet Monshiro scene. He talks about not wanting to ruin the friendship he shares with everyone, and I remember that's why he keeps on his mask: so that noone realises Hikage stole his face :(
Also he was playing chasey/tag with a butterfly and I am pretty sure the butterfly knew what it was doing. That's the closest thing he had to a friend for ten years :(
And now the path itself!
The walkthrough suggested I pick "I wish this was all a dream" in Chapter 3, which I haven't done before. I was vaguely hoping it would somehow be a Monshiro scene even though he doesn't show up that early, but instead it was Karasuba teasing Beniyuri. And then when she tries being optimistic he sharply punctures her self esteem, then angrily pins her to the wall, calling her a liar, and acts like he's going to force a kiss on her...before letting her go and saying it was all a joke?? Then he changes the subject to saying he feels like he knows everyone from before, but there's one person throwing off the dynamic.
...well I guess that made me ship Beniyuri/Monshiro in the sense that it made me ship Beniyuri/ANYONE BUT KARASUBA :/ She was most definitely not into it.
Oh, interesting, I remember 6.3 being a darker grey before, but now it's the same grey as everything else. It's the branching point for the Monshiro path, so I guess that means I unlocked all the choices that branch off from it.
So! It's Chapter 6. Hikage has been revealed as the villain, and has invited everyone to meet him in an obvious trap. Last time I picked "Let's go right away". But this time I pick "I want to wait a little while".
Monshiro comes to Beniyuri at night and hugs her, saying he has been trapped in the cold for so long, and touching her is like hugging the sun. He survived all these years on the hope of one day giving her back her ribbon, and when she arrived she brought back his memories, and the memory of warmth.
Monshiro: Ai, that's why I'm going to send you back to your world.
Beniyuri: Aren' you going to come with us?
Monshiro: ...whatever happens, don't give up hope.
She falls asleep, and we switch to Monshiro POV! He smiles at Takuya and Aki sleeping, and seeing that Ai is frowning in her sleep gives her a kiss on the forehead, as a good luck charm, and to give himself courage.
And then he leaves to confront Hikage. He doesn't think he'll win, but he has to try.
nnng.
TIME TO SAVE AND PLAY THE REST TOMORROW.
(and then several months passed and I finished the Yamato path, and then I played this and several days passed, so this may be a bit choppy)
Godddd Hikage is such a creep. He's trying to drive Monshiro to despair by telling him he's a burden on everyone, showing him one of Yamato's memories of wishing he didn't have to look after him any more. Until that moment Monshiro had assumed he was dead, and knowing Yamato has been looking after him for ten years, and (sometimes) resenting it makes him freeze up.
Hikage shoots...
...and Monshiro wakes next to a concerned looking Kagiha, who pulled him away just in time. Monshiro is understandably confused that Kagiha would oppose Hikage so openly, and Kagiha says Monshiro is his friend and he couldn't just watch him get shot. Monshiro is sweetly grateful, and clearly still cares about Kagiha, and Kagiha is surprised.
Me: Aww, that's sweet, I guess he's not all bad.
Monshiro: You always see everything and smile and do nothing. You knew we shouldn't have gone to the mansion but we didn't listen. And you died saving me. I'm sorry, if it wasn't for me you'd still be alive.
Kagiha: I must admit...it's selfish, but I would like us to swap places. I would take better care of her.
Me: WOULD YOU THOUGH
Monshiro: Everyone would be better off if I didn't exist :(
Kagiha: ...
Monshiro is filled with despair, his pendant turns black, and cracks and falls.
And Kagiha just watches and says nothing.
>:(
Back at the greenhouse everyone realises Monshiro is missing. Yamato and Karasuba go to look for him, telling Beniyuri to stay and wait. But she goes to search herself, and feels a breeze. Could it be an open window? A way to escape?
She finds Kagiha by a huge crack in the ground, which he says leads to an endlyss Abyss of darkness.
Kagiha: Monshiro was overcome by despair, I couldn't save him :(
Fuuuckk youuuuuu
Because he built up ten years of despair with the ribbon's protection, once it was removed it created this...despair singularity thing.
Beniyuri: He's all alone? In the dark?? I'm going after him!!
Kagiha, actually upset now: WAIT NO WHAT. Can't you just...let him go?
Beniyuri: I refuse to be happy if that comes at the cost of someone else's happiness!
Kagiha, whose entire life strategy is to do exactly that: :/
At first she is overcome by despair in the formless darkness. But the ribbon creates light and she realises she can feel a chill in that direction. It's not entirely formless, and she shouldn't be afraid.
She sees drops of water floating in the air. As they meet her face, she experiences Monshiro's memories.
We see him as "Almond eyed boy" waking without memory in the mansion. Kagiha/Natsuki ("droopy eyed boy") is already there, with Hikage. There's no child!Natsuki sprite, and Hikage's sprite is in sepia, with no eyes.
Hikage: Do you know him?
Kagiha: Yes, you should get him to help us.
Monshiro gets his memories back, but has to live with Kagiha and Hikage in the safe room...along with passing spirits Hikage recruits to find kaleidoscope shards, and then kills when they become overcome with despair.
It's not clear how much time passes before Monshiro decides he won't do this any more.
Kagiha: I promised to go back to her.
Monshiro: I don't care about that, I just don't want to hurt anyone any more.
And so Monshiro lives alone. He avoids the passing spirits, knowing they will find it easier to pass on if he doesn't talk to them. So he is entirely alone ;_; He feels himself losing his memories, and even his face. He becomes "Fox masked boy". All that remains is the knowledge that he has to give the ribbon back to someone.
;_; ;_;
So I guess we didn't see the past ten years on Kagiha and Hikage's routes because it made them look EVEN WORSE than on their own. And they already looked pretty bad! I still wonder what Usagi's relationship was like with the two boys. But I guess neither of them had Beniyuri's drive to befriend her despite she and Hikage being against it.
Anyway.
Beniyuri finds Monshiro curled in a ball of misery, crying away his memories. He doesn't recognise her, and she has to tell him about everything that's happened between them before he goes "I was waiting for someone...are you her?"
He wants to stay alone, saying he's only a burden. She says some very sweet things I can't quite remember about how relationships are about helping each other, and the people who care about him want to help him. If he's troubled someone, he shouldn't run away. He should talk to them again, so he can say sorry, or thank you.
They walk and walk, following the ribbon. She's sure there must be a way out. And then they see a light above them, shimmering like they're deep underwater and it's the sun.
But at that moment, Monshiro starts to sink into the darkness. Beniyuri refuses to let him go, telling him to keep trying to keep hoping, but he just thanks her for everything, and then gives her a kiss, "for luck". She's so surprised she lets go of his hand, and he smiles sadly and lets himself be pulled away from her.
AND THEN. I GOT A CHOICE.
"Call his name" or "keep reaching"
So, I looked up a walkthrough, made a save, and chose the former.
Monshiro End:
Beniyuri is pulled into the light. She wakes in the real world, alone. Everyone else is stuck in comas, with no sign of waking up. She visits every day, and sits with them. But as she sadly tells the sleeping Monshiro, she isn't sure she has it in her to hope.
Kazuya End:
Beniyuri screams reaches and refuses to give up, and there is a bright light and she finally manages to grab for his hand.
Ai wakes in a hospital bed. She runs, unsteady, to his room, and sees him slowly wake.
Kazuya: Ai? Why is it so bright, and warm?
Ai: We're back. Welcome home, Kazuya :)
Kazuya: ....I'm home. Welcome home, Ai :)
We see Ai talking to Aki and Takuya, still comatose, cheerfully asking them to help her persuade Kazuya to stop pushing himself too hard in his physical therapy.
Kazuya: Thank you, Ai, you never gave up on me, even when I was sinking into the dark.
Ai: You're the one who told me to never give up hope.
They talk about not giving up on hope for the others, too, and he puts her hand on his. She thinks about how they kissed in the Abyss and blushes, and he looks at her, entranced.
Kazuya: I like you, Ai. I always wanted to be the one who stayed by your side. And that wish came true...but it's not fair. I'm not going to tell you I love you until Aki and Takuya wake up.
Ai: ...oh :) Well, they will! We'll visit them every day, and never give up.
Kazuya: Yes :)
And then they hear Aki and Takuya gasp, waking.
THE END
hmm! I think I liked the Takuya ending more, but that was still sweet, and I'm glad I got to learn more about Kazuya. I would have liked to see what Ai and Kazuya were like as a couple, even if for just a few lines like we did with her and Takuya. And while we got a nice Takuya&Kazuya reconciliation scene on Takuya's route, it would be interesting to see Takuya deal with Ai being with his brother.
Now for little Aki-chan and his loose grasp of consent /o\
This was gentle and a little bittersweet.
